LF: Good printer for home

Postby redmanjp » November 28th, 2021, 2:56 pm

Looking for a good printer for the occasional printing at home. Doesn't have to be any heavy duty one as we might only print like 5-10 pages once every 1 to 2 weeks.

The last one I bought from pricemart was an HP ink advantage 3775 for I think about $300 but I guess I got what I paid for as it started giving problems on about a years time and now won't even recognize OEM ink cartridges from the same pricemart.

A good deskjet multifunction with scan print and copy would be enough but one that lasts for a few years.

I have an officejet pro 9010 from pmart - I think it's about 1600.

Pros: Easy to setup, has scanner, printer, scan to email, WIFI printing etc.
Cons: Starter cartridges finish very quickly. CYMK cartridges are 200-300 Each. Does not scan legal sized documents (I think I tried and didn't work - subject to correction here)

I've seen it used in work, so I think it should be able to give a few years service.

Courts had an array of Hp printers. There's a Canon I have seen around that also has good reviews. Most recently I saw it at Fair and Square.

Bought an HP 2775 all in one printer from the Wizz last year this time for about $400/$450.

After one year I just changed the original cartridge this weekend.

Cartridges most reasonable - $100 for 1 at PriceSmart. (Black and colour same price)

Super Tech has them for $115.00 each

Checked the Wizz recently and they were selling $165.00 for ONE.

Printer is now $495.00 at Wizz

I have the 2775 from Pricesmart, bought in September of this year. Them cartridges don't last at all though. How much prints you do on average weekly or monthly?

My black finished last week and the colour finished today.
I have three coloured ones to replace but no black. I may have mistakenly thought I had one black in the mix.

Spend the money and get an ink tank printer. HP conning customers with their defective cartridges. After a few months original cartridges not being recognised in many of those budget printers

OP

My 7 year old Brother failed a few weeks ago and I needed a replacement printer asap.

Got a HP 6475 for $1100 from Wizz.

It's a multifunction, print, scan and copy. Only issue is that it does not accommodate legal size paper.

So far so good.

For those who can afford it, purchase a HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw (W1A80A). It will print on 4 reams of paper before having to replace the toner/s.

Throw anything at it and it will do it for you. Print, copy, scan, wireless, direct to usb printing, duplex, letter/legal etc.

I purchased one 2 years ago and it runs like brand new still. I print a lot and as of late I have been creating glossy digital photos with it using specialized paper.

IIRC, I paid $4k for it either at Wizz or CZone.

Like many of you all, I was completely fed up of buying disposable inkjet/cartridge printers. That couple of hundred dollars on a per annum basis and the frequency with which I had to procure cartridges was too much hassle and headache. So going laser jet saved me time and money.

Check vids on YouTube and you would see how fast these modern laser-jet prints. You’ll never go back inkjet or officejet again.

Try loading the legal size paper and pushing in the tray until you hear the click. The tray flap will remain down/open and the paper will be hanging out the tray.

I have a HP printer and that is what I do to print legal size.

I think the ink tank printers can give the laser competition in terms of price per print, might not be able to compete in features or quality though

The hp can print legal. It cant scan legal because of the screen size

Lots of those Deskjet HP's can't scan legal but can print. I just cam scan legal when that need arises.

Chances are once you see the ADF, it would be able to scan legal cause that's the case with my MFP. Also, printing can also be done via input / by-pass feeder. This feature is found in some Laserjets and Officejets.

Dave, you may want to double check the cam scanner app for vulnerabilities cause I deleted mine a couple years ago due to an article I read. Perhaps the issue was sorted by now.

I'm amazed that more people don't refill there own printer cartridge. It's much cheaper and anyone can do it. I've got a Canon (cant remember model), and refilling cartridges on my own. Yes, the quality may not be as good as the original, but most of my printing is text, so quality is not an issue.

That is tough now with the current crop of printers... Either there is a chip on the print cartridge or the printer/software records the serial number of previously used cartridges and refuses to print with them after a certain number of pages are printed. Reset procedures might work, blocking of certain pins with tape, etc. makes it very inconvenient

My first ever printer was back in my UWI days. Used to refill cartridges by some guy on Rodney Road in Endeavour. IIRC was less than $100 to do it.
The cartridges back then were much bigger but simpler in design than the HP ones now.

15-20 a week for me would be laser territory.
My XL cartridge on a very old HP lasts 1.5 yes with an average of 25-30 a mth with mostly fast draft quality.

At home we have an older DeskJet 4675 HP . After buying HP562 Inks at bookstores and even PriceSmart it says that the original hp inks are not compatible Nevertheless it still scans very well.

Can't understand the ink problem

I have a brother-brand laser printer that I've been using pretty infrequently. Using the same toner for the past 10 years, but I can go on amazon right now and get toner even for this ancient model. Brother supports their stuff. I would recommend highly recommend it.

I bought an HP Inkjet for color printing (paid like $350 at a bookstore for it) and it works fine but sucks ink very quickly. Hardly use it for that reason. Also bought a cheap HP laserjet for the office and that was a mistake. Roller gets stuck and toner is hard to find.
