SEA Results now online

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » July 1st, 2022, 1:36 am

SEA results are available already online.

There will be no lining up, and no gathering of parents, guardians, and their little ones who are due to receive Secondary Entrance Assessment results this year.

This, as the Ministry of Education has announced that a digital system has been developed for the 2022 results to be accessed online.

Top SEA listing not to be published

Minister of Education Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly has announced that for the 2022 SEA examination, the top-placed students will not be publicised.

In a press conference on Friday, Gadsby-Dolly said the practice started in an effort to inspire other students to achieve the same success, but over time has had negative results.

“In particular, this public practice has resulted in students who have performed admirably, even to secure a second place in their first-choice secondary school, to have their performances overshadowed by an unhealthy competitiveness, often driven by parents, over relative examination scores, which are preliminary.”

She said the ministry was "extremely concerned that this practice now has the potential to have our young scholars now put under undue pressure to secure a high ranking in the SEA examination and diminish their self-worth.”

She felt the practice, which had a laudable aim, had been “disfigured by changing societal attitudes.”

The ranking list will only be finalised after the review period has lapsed. It will also be available through written request.

“Consideration will be given by the Ministry of Education to the provision of the final rank of the examinations individually and privately.”

In October 2020, the ministry named Ameera Beekhoo top SEA student and in an award ceremony at the ministry she was given a laptop, a cellphone and a bmobile internet contract.

But on March 31, the principal of Bekhoo’s former school, San Fernando TML, got a letter saying Bekhoo will get the Presidents Medal (Silver) for placing second. The principal of a private primary school in Port of Spain was invited along with one of her students and three other guests, to receive the top award instead.

Both letters have since been rescinded and after the parents of the students threatened legal action, Bekhoo and Aaron Subero, were jointly awarded the gold medal.

Good. An 11 year old child's token exam results are nobody else's business.

ideally they would have published each school's intake student numbers and the corresponding SEA scores. That way everybody would know how much bobol was taking place. Concordant has 20% of places allowed for bobol, but people speculating is more -- and without official scores published in the papers, nobody knows. Bobol hidden.

Publish all the school's intake scores in the papers and bobol has no place to hide.

Publishing scores would also be good for parents picking choices. That way you would know whether a choice is realistic or if you wasting a choice by listing it. Putting a first choice inline with your child's scores guarantees first-choice placement, rather than putting an unrealistic school as first choice and falling down to the second choice and third choice sorting queue or being zoned.

There's an entire process to putting choices that parents have no idea about and the MoE doesn't publish any data to help.

lemme just give the Minister kudos for putting the focus where it belongs: on the students that failed or barely passed the examination. If we don't do something to help -- we as a society going to have to pay for that one way or another.

The summer camp program is an excellent start. Maybe give that particular cohort extra funding as they move through secondary school over the next 5 years.

When was the last time we had a situation where more students failed the SEA exam than passed?

aligns to the research that COVID remote learning didn't work for everyone. Especially with curricula designed purely for F2F, teachers not verse in modern pedagogy, countless differences in the playing field, and of course technology (or knowledge of tech) failures.

Would make a good local case study.

2020-SEA students just had to write the exam
2021-SEA students just really had to do past papers at home, the syllabus is usually mostly done in standard 4
2022-SEA students basically had to learn the entire SEA curriculum via online learning, a garbage fire ensues

"Unhealthy" competitiveness? Lol
The world gone soft yes. Success should always be celebrated. Not hidden because the people who didn't succeed will feel bad.

Can Covid and online learning really be attributed to the poor SEA results? Weren't SEA results over the past 10 years already in decline?

now that is true. lewwe not mix words, the top students generally skew Indo-Trinidadian and the media hero-worship creates the impression that only Indo-Trinidadians are doing well under the SEA system.

The reaction to that is many Afro-Trinidadians view themselves as being victimized by the SEA -- creating calls to end the SEA (or "abolish" the SEA, to make explicit the connection to the oppression of African people).

Look at this in the Newsday. It seems like we were on track to the SDMS getting another top spot..

Maharaj said, "I will say the Maha Sabha schools did better than last year. Our schools did very, very well this year." He said in recent years his schools had made "a tremendous improvement."

He expected the Association of Denominational Boards to offer some commentary, even as he wished to speak to his colleagues.

While not yet ready to comment, Maharaj questioningly revealed that a Maha Sabha pupil had scored 271 this year, ahead of last year's first-place score of 260.

People would say leave it so and let the cards fall where it may. But inflaming ethnic division isn't healthy to our country. Extreme reactions like removing (or "abolishing") the SEA will leave both Afro-Trinidadians and Indo-Trinidadians at the mercy of corruption and bobol for school places.

This explains the decline in the past 2 years. Basically this year students entire Form 4 preparation was affected by the pandemic lockdown of school. I think they only came out in January?

possibly. the implication being the red government people want to diminish the accomplishment of the Maha Sabha schools (famously called "cow sheds" by red government)

my position is that not important and SDMS should swallow it in the interest of the greater good.
