Almost all those degrees are useless in T&T. In another country where jobs are plenty and diverse getting these degrees would actually be gold, but not here when the endgame to get a job with said degree is non-existent given our current job climate.

Outside of the job situation, certificates are actually better than degrees because they are more focused and offers greater technical training too.

you have to consider... academic pursuit follows meritocracy. Who gets how many passes, who gets into the most competitive programs, who gets the honor roll, etc.

but the real world is not a meritocracy. especially not in deeply corrupt countries like Trinidad.

Carnival studies and the like are "useless" --- unless you have the right connections and then you get an arranged Ministry job or Government contracts. That Carnival studies program is designed to link you up with the appropriate clique, become a full member of that clique, and you will be successful if the intended mutual back-scratching is spoken without words.

If you not link up and really depending on meritocracy -- you gonna need a practical skill to sell as your labor. Skills certificates and the like are where the "SBCS, UTT, COSTATT, SAMS, Cipriani, Kenson, Trinzuela" come in and once you identify were the jobs are (you 100% need to check this out before you apply), you gonna get through and probably have a way to get a steady income.

worst bet is the pure academic degrees. very few jobs available and unless you can secure a job through contacts, you SOL and probably going to have to make a job for yourself or settle to something outside your subject area. Island is small, so you gonna be a jack-of-all-trades and mold yourself to fit the island's needs.

Someone working for the NCC with a MA in Carnival Studies from UTT could be utilizing what was learnt for the upliftment of society as opposed to a MBBS graduate who is either unemployed or is a Teller in a bank. In this particular case, the fancy UWI MBBS is absolutely useless but at least he/she is employed thus turning the GDP wheel of this country and that right now is very important.

I can only speak for IT so: MCSE, CCNA, CISSP etc...

It would be too easy to punch down on degrees such as Carnival Studies. In my opinion, those have their merit for folks who spent years already in the field and wish to have a BSc or BA in a familiar field to pad their portfolio. For a person without such experience doing that degree, is a waste of money. Just like a fresh faced BSc graduate immediately doing an MBA at the age of 23 without industry connections.

Otherwise, I would say oversaturated degrees that cant stand on their own are damn useless. Those would be among many others, International Relations, Political Science and Psychology. You need an MSc/MA to know anything functionally useful, and is a filler degree for people whose parents begged them to go to UWI to get any degree, so they went to lime.

In the current job market, a degree (no matter how useless) will give you an edge over someone without it. All other things equal.

Experience will trump education, but experience alone is not going to pass the first pass of HR filtering if the JD calls for a degree. It is what it is.

Forget what other people have. Focus on you and what is your own unique value proposition.

There are some degrees which only qualify you to teach that particular field in Trinidad,as we would probably not have a job opportunity for it.These would be the purely academic fields like mathematics and botany .There are probably more,I am not up to date with the programmes.
