Local Government Elections will be held on August 14th.

The announcement was made via the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).

The OPM, in a media release, said Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has advised President Christine Kangaloo to appoint Monday August 14th, 2023 as the date for the holding of the Local Government Elections.

Nomination Day will be Monday June 26th, 2023.

The House of Representatives on Monday approved amendments to the Miscellaneous Municipal Corporations Extension of Terms of Office and Validation Bill, 2023, paving the way for the calling of the elections once the Bill is assented to by the President.

Local Government Elections were postponed in December 2022 when parts of Miscellaneous Provisions (Local Government Reform) Act 2020 were proclaimed and Government extended the terms of all Councillors and Aldermen for a 4th year.

UNC activist Ravi Balgobin Maharaj challenged the decision all the way to the Privy Council. On May 18th, the Privy Council ruled that the Government’s extension of the Local Government term from December 2022 to December 2023 was unlawful.
