Seems like you got a dose of that bad diese.
Same symptoms other ppl getting.
Same repair also, once the problem reaches the the injectors and they seize, its a full repair.
thats why i still checking mine with a bottle before fill up and using regular treatments. the added lubricants, detergents and cetane seems to have become necessary to counteract the poor diesel.

Shutdown, tumbling but not starting.
Change oil and oil filter every 5k.
Change fuel and air filter ever 20k.
Liquimoly purge every 20k.
Never used any fuel treatment in tank.

2 weeks before shutdown
Rough idle for 5 seconds one day
No loss of power, no smoking

1 week before shutdown
Rough idle with knock for 5 seconds one day
No loss of power, no smoking

Went to mechanic to check, fuel filter doing 10k very dirty and replaced, fuel filter assembly also removed and cleaned.
Mechanic starts, idle for 10 seconds and knocks for 5 seconds and shuts off. Engine never again started, just tumble.

Mechanic had to drain and clean tank, flush fuel lines, replace the new fuel filter since it got contaminated again as soon as it was changed. Still not starting.

Injectors seized, had to be cleaned/repaired and calibrated. Some washer thingy mechanic also changed. Van started.

Advised from now onwards of the following:
Amsoil injector treatment and cetane boost 2 oz. On every full up
Change fuel filter every 5km, fine to use Sakura if changing every 5km.
Friends advise to do the purge every 10km instead of 20km.

My brothers, please comment up and give me the guidance.

First, locate the drain valve at the base of the fuel filter housing and use the plunger at the top to pump some diesel out every oil change into a small container. it is going to be a bit messy so place a rag below the housing and valve when you are doing this; or have the mechanic do it when he does the oil change.

Use some fuel treatment in the tank (anything that claims to add lubricity and improve cetane rating that has a brand name)

Fill up at fewer fuel stations and observe how the vehicle feels after fill up. (I only fill up at two stations usually). It also goes without saying, don't fill up if a fuel tanker just delivered fuel. I have watched contaminants that I drained into a bottle from my filter housing take at least 2 days to settle out after shaking.

Don't wait until the vehicle is nearly empty before filling up. I usually fill up when my fuel gauge reads around half; so if I do take on severely contaminated fuel, it is just a half tank of the stuff my filter has to deal with. The fuel system constantly cycles fuel pass the filter when the vehicle is running. Whatever

Stop using so much Diesel Purge and stop changing filters so often. There is a greater chance for contaminants to be introduced to the fuel system every time you do one of the above.

Use genuine filters. Yeah, this one is going to hurt your pocket a little bit. It isn't like oil where you know it is a quality product you are adding to the system every time you change it. The quality of our fuel isn't the greatest; Don't cheap out on your last line of defence.

I am just over 100kkms with my 2.5 lux and have changed my fuel filter 3 times.
30k km
46k km (the light on my dashboard came on which forced me to change this one)
98k km

That said I am trying to push 60k km on every fuel filter, but if my dashboard light comes on or I see evidence of severe contamination, I will change it before. I will have to say no to the sakura fuel element; In this instance, I rather run an original filter longer than a cheaper filter at shorter intervals.

I am planning to run some LM diesel purge through my system, but laziness has me dumping a lot of fuel additives in the tank (more than the recommended amount).

I use the following more than any other.
-Power Service Diesel Kleen (available at Pricesmart if you shop there)
-Redline 85 plus
-Penray Diesel fuel conditioner/Diesel fuel prep.

get a piece of clear 1/4" hose and drill a hole in a chubby bottle cap so the hose fits snug
you can fit the bottle and hose below the fuel filter canister drain to collect what comes out when you purging the fuel filter.

boy I surprised you have changed fuel filter so few times esp since you would have done a lot of that mileage under the local petrotrin made dirty fuel.

I am putting a lot of faith in that filter membrane... If it works as it should it will keep contaminants out of the pump, rail and injectors. Once the contaminants are caught they should remain held in the filter until it is replaced. Filters usually get more efficient as they get dirtier.

If you need gasket kits for the tapper cover, PM me

I have genuine kits with the main gasket, 4 top seals, 4 injector nozzle seals, and with or without the MAP sensor filter. 600 and 480 respectively.

Have cabin filters also.

Does anyone have a list of the D4D issues and preventative maintenance or resolution? This would be a nice resource for everyone to have .

That might be a difficult list to compile.

The vehicle owners manual is quite comprehensive and detailed on preventative maintenance and maintenance schedules. By far, the best things for these engines are oil changes every 5000km and fluids changeout every 40000km.

Early models had injector seal issues which lead to oil sludge formation. This caused oil starvation when oil pickup screens became clogged... And eventually engine failure

VNT turbo models had problems with vanes sticking due to a buildup of soot.

Injectors can wear out prematurely due to a lack of lubricity in the fuel. (Bailey's diesel group)

People complain about OE brake rotors warping easily

Those are the major ones that I can remember that are vehicle specific

Need some feedback
What is the largest Tyre size you can run on a Hilux without rubbing and without modifying (no lift/no wheel Arch or mudguard modification, no aftermarket bumper)

I'm thinking about getting 265/70/r17 but something tells me it is just a little too big

thats 31.6x10.4x17 when converted, thats 1" bigger than stock. if using stock wheel, it may not rub.

i runnin 285/60/18 with 2" lift and i still get slight rubbing.

Have no problem with the slight rub of the 275 65 17

The 265 70 17 will give me more overall height you think ?

Adjust the caster to suit, and if needed, remove the mudguard.
You will be fine after that

That list is pretty exhaustive... I use opportunities to get stuff done
Every oil change is my opportunity to
- drain diesel fuel sedimentor
- change a small amount of power steering fluid
- grease the driveshaft joints
- check suspension components

Drain and refill the trans fluid every 4 oil changes (about 3.5 quarts every 20k km). Don't bother with trans filter as I can't see the benefit.(it's more like a strainer if I'm not mistaken and that can easily be washed)

I change brake fluid when I change brake pads.
Experience from others has informed me that brake shoes last through at least 3 sets of brake pads. I only adjust handbrakes before inspection; because adjustment shifts the brake bias rearwards for a short while and this is dangerous and I need my brakes to be reliable.

I don't adjust/check anything engine wise and valve wise; I don't see the need.

Have to admit I do not like the new formulation Bosch brake pads. It appears to contain more metall than previous generations, which means it is harsher on the rotors than I would like it to be. It also creates a lot of reddish brown dust.

It is pretty consistent but I want to change them

The Bosch I like comes in the blue and yellow box. These newer models come in a blue and silver box

I in need of a driver's side wing mirror currently. Any suggestions on a replacement welcome. The assembly itself is damaged
