Re: So I recently bought a local used hilux

Postby lighthammer » July 26th, 2010, 2:41 am

I ended up getting a fantastic deal on a 4x4 2.5 hilux locally used, and I'm an avid DIY-er because in my 5 years of owning and maintaining a vehicle I havent come across a trustworthy mechanic. Its always a half-assed job

Congrats bro, good job on a good deal. How much did you pay, what year, what features you got?
True that there are hardly any good backyard mechanics around, most of them can't do a proper job unless you either stick around to supervise or give very specific instructions on what to do. A lot of the local companies do a good job but can be expensive if the repairs start to add-up.

I figure there's going to be alot of stuff I cant do on the truck and I'll need to know where you guys get your stuff done (besides tttl, sometimes I swear there is the WORST) and what things should I look out for. I'll be changing the oil, air, fuel filters and fluids next weekend.

What kind of bad-service did you get at TTTL? I was in there last week to have a look at the 3.0 4x4 Manual hilux (which was sold out and they didn't have any left to show me) and from the busy-atmosphere of their place it looked like they were working hard to try to bring & keep up their after-sales standard. I might be wrong and was just fooled by a shiny facade but share your own bad-experience if you have any.

The bloody thing didnt come with powered mirrors. I have to manually adjust them and its really annoying. Do you guys know where I can get the modules for that? I might have someone who could install it, but I trying to source the parts without going to toyota. And well if you know where to get that, the electronic folding ones would be even better :P

Check sweeky on the forum, he might have some parts for you. If not - then take a drive in your new (old) truck to the bamboo dude.

enjoy the ride man....if i were you, i wouldnt worry too much about those power mirrors. i had installed a pair in my lux a while back, new model. bought the entire mirror package with switches etc. cpost $1000.00. but i wouldnt do it again since no matter how i adjusted the mirrors, the left side never showed my target area, only the left side of the van was seen. bought the package from marud in marabella, but they no longer exist. stick with the manual mirrors, one less stress

^^ werd.

Power mirrors are overrated, unless you need them to help you reverse in tight spots and not rub down other folks' car with your broad-@ss tires.... heh heh heh.

Maybe if you installed the "power mirrors" you wouldnt experience that problem.

I have a very good diesel mechanic whi has proven to be quite reliable:
He is certified and handles our fleet of diesel vehicles.
Alex :345-6295.

Tell him Darren sent you.

you learn something new everyday. there are actually left hand drive and right handed drive power mirrors. there's a difference in the way the mirrors adjust according to the seating area of the driver ie left or right of the vehicle

Congrats on the purchase ... it's a decent truck.

Is this your first diesel? Depending on the mileage, I wouldn't rush to change all the fluids (besides the diff oils)... the coolant is long life good up to 160 000km according to Toyota Japan. I'm about to hit 80 000km and still have some of the original fluids in my truck without any problems.

FYI... the spiral cable goes bad after a while, but you can get that fixed outside of Toyota now. And as with any diesel, don't make it a habit to run it below quarter tank. Diesel pump servicing and repairs are expensive.

If you need OEM disc pads or OEM oil filters, pm me. Enjoy the lux.

Good to hear about your progress dude. Must be exciting to build such a project. How's the turbo timer working? My frontier has the Greddy that N&M installs, but I always wanted the OEM style like the Volution kit that 4x4trinidad sells.

Anyways, I'm in that new ride phase where I wanna buy a billion things for it and its all about the details, the little things that make your ride comfortable and stand out. I want to add just a few things and as ridiculous as it might seem, forgive me :D

Whatever you do, please.... PLEASE don't do this to your truck:

For OEM parts, check sweeky, he's got the hookup.
Good luck bro - please put up some pics when you wash the van on sunday! :)

Bought an original revised one on Amayama about four years ago, total cost was $1,150.
Toyota was $2,500
ROC was $1,800
FU was $1,400
There are also cheaper ones on Amazon for around US$20-50
