Raising a low model hilux, anyone know?

Postby TeamH2O » December 16th, 2010, 9:05 pm

How can i raise the low model hilux? 1998 model/TBE series.

Is it possible to raise it like how the hi models are? Was planning to also use some big huge tyres to drive thru mud.

Change the suspension, front shocks, longer front coilovers, change the rear leafsprings and rear shocks.

That's pretty much the basic idea, i guess.

Lots of raised older model hiluxeses on the road, sure to get a reference for a good mech or parts place to get the necessary parts from one of those drivers.

Not as simple as just coilovers - your LN 145 (and mine) has torsion bars to the front which can be cranked up or lowered - I wanted to do this too and did some research: The torsion bars will only allow so much lift - I'm lifted level to the rear (I got mine with a bit of a forward slope)

Other tricks included buying a body lift kit which changes the body and tray rubbers out for taller ones but anything more than 2 1/2" will require mods to your radiator mounting point and brake lines (the metal coils you see when you open the bonnet and look down to the left and right rear of the engine compartment)

A friend of mine threw some 20" rims on and, even though I'm not a fan of massive rims - especially on a work horse like ours, I have to say I was quite impressed with the height he gained.

Just my 2¢

4x2 LN145 2.4D. Excuse the noobness, but I'm new to the pickup scene.

Besides the ride getting a little rougher, what will be the disadvantage of initially raising the height using the 17" Prado wheels and tyres? Will this cause any issues with stock suspension?
