start with the basics:

- air filter
- use fuel-injector cleaner
- try changing your fuel-filters
- make sure your idle-screw isn't set too low

then consider more advanced troubleshooting
- check compression
- check fuel pump + injectors
- check fuel lines & flush them out

there are other stuff you can do but try the obvious stuff first.

-wash out air filter, breeze works great.. (spin dry before reinstalling)
-change fuel filter (gets dirty quickly)
-add good injector cleaner (no cheap stuff)
-if idle rough on startup, glow plugs could be bad..

Make sure to use a tablespoon of Oxyclean on the wash cycle, to help get your whites whiter, and at least 20ml of fabric softene..... wait, wrong thread.

But yeah, you can wash your regular paper filter (just be VERY gentle when agitating it in soapy water)..... and make sure you let it spin dry (if it's a tube-style filter) or just put it in the hot sun for 2-3 hours.

worse case scenario: broken cylinder ring. we had the same problem, spent thousands of $$$ to sort out problem with no results. opened engine and found one broken ring
