Nissan D22/40 YD25 Engine Question

Hey Tuners,

So I have a serious question about this YD25 Engine, which is both in the D22 Frontier & D40 Navara.

Everyone keeps running from the YD25 engine, everyone you ask, they say the YD25 engine is the most troublesome of all Nissan Diesel Engines.

I'm doing a rebuilt on my YD25, but everyone's advice is to switch out and replace with a TD27 or a QD32. I did alot of reading and research, and can garantee that these engines are bosses in it's class. Switching to one of these engines in my D22 definitely is a good move. Unfortunately the cost is indeed hefty.

But my question is why isn't anyone willing to learn about the engineering of the YD25 engine. When the D40 Navaras reach there age limit for an engine change would owmers also be told to replace with a TD27 or QD32?
I think that would definitely be degrading all that the Navara was build for, droping it's standard, performance & resale value.

Eventually someone's going to have to learn about the mechanics of these YD25 engines, and how to rebuild.

For now i guess it looks like owners will have to replace.

The yd25 engine in the d22/40 is two different engines same engine code but different pump, turbo and many others parts ,say its a upgraded engine in the Navara ,nothing can be used in the frontier d22

I have a D22 with YD25 also doing 239,000 km's, never gave any engine problems. Turbo still goes strong, no leak. Top mount intercooler got a leak recently on the right side tank (normal problem) with these, (I need one, if anyone has). I have alot of blow-by now and I'm going to rebuild in October.
I find these YD25 are really reliable and willing to spend to rebuild rather than put in TD27. Complete rebuilt Yd25 will be much better than TD27 used.

@trini44 it's gonna be roughly around 12k, I'm closing in to that figure myself right now.

@ruffrider27, even though it's an upgrade to the D22 version of the YD25 engine, it's still a new engine and nevertheless i think it's time for mechanics to learn about these engines, i'm doing a rebuild now, and the total cost soo far is 10,700 which is still more economical than changing over engines. A TD27 engine and transmission alone is 18000 and it's used, plus u have to re-wire and go licensing office to do an engine change. After a job like that someone cant sell there vehicle without making a buss.

@Satman, i'm doing my rebuild right now on 249,000km.

d22 yd25 is sketchy

however the Navara's motor is stronger and somewhat different though the coding.

you could refer to the service manual thread for confirmation
