Sounds like a broken Piston connecting rod or Water in Fuel.

Check the following and if they are ok get a proper mechanic to chk your vehicle:
Air filter is clean
All Glow plugs working
Fuel filter clean (not plugging)
Engine Oil is correct for vehicle & Oil Filter
Fuel tank free of water(If in doubt drain and clean fuel tank and refill)
Strainer (If present) on inlet to Fuel pump is clean.

Is this the Common rail engine? Do you use a treatment when filling up? Is the smoke only on startup or throughout operation? Try using Amsoil Cetane Boost ( Full bottle to a Full tank of diesel) Run the Engine let this flush through your system and see if anything changes. Another thing to clean is your MAP & MAF sensors.

If still no luck try scanning the vehicle for any errors.

To check if pistons and connecting rod bearings are good u have to remove each one and inspect. Did he split up the block? Cuz to me it sounds like a piston damage or a piston ring broken. U can do a compression test in each piston chamer to ensure all are firing correctly. White smoke is usually oil burning and a broken piston ring is usually the culprit.
