Toyota old vs new

Postby Cowboy » December 17th, 2024, 3:31 pm

Good day Tuners. I decided to buy a Toyota pickup automatic but i am not sure which engine is more reliable and easy parts availability...The old 1KD 3.0L or the new 1GD 2.8L...Would really like to know the pros and cons..really appreciate it. Thanks.

1kd Hilux
Timing belt
Injector seal issues which used to cause sludge, which blocked the oil pickup and starved the engine of oil leading to engine damage... Should have been rectified in later models. Stuck Vnt vanes and EGR soot issues
Older diesel injectors... Louder engine

1gd
Timing chain
Worn chain affected timing which I believe lead to piston damage
Needs high quality oil and regular oil changes to help prevent chain elongation due to wear.
Not sure about turbocharger longevity as they bumped power from 3##Nm to like 500Nm
Not sure about soot or EGR issues
Newer piezoelectric injectors... Generally quieter engine

the timing chain in the 1gd stretches faster than most engines with timing chains ?
most engines with timing chains, the chain last very long, usually disregarded in general
