Obama adviser Henry Bernard Campbell denied entry to T&T

Postby Olivia425 » April 23rd, 2010, 10:45 pm

Was listening to UNC rally tonight and heard about this. So I googled.

Sad.

US strategist refused entry
http://www.bbc.co.uk/caribbean/news/sto ... ndup.shtml

American political campaign strategist, Henry Bernard Campbell was denied entry to Trinidad and Tobago and deported back to the US on Friday.

Mr Campbell who advised President Obama during his election campaign was hired by the opposition United National Congress to work with leader of the opposition, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, ahead of the 24 May general election.

A statement from the ministry of national security said Mr Campbell was denied entry in accordance with provisions in section eight of the immigration act.

That section allows the ministry or an immigration officer to deny entry to anyone who is determined to be an undesirable character.

Mr Campbell visited Trinidad two weeks ago to work with Mrs Persad-Bissessar.

^^ the story is bigger than that, what does a move like that say about our state of political affairs, fairness of treatment/equality, biasness, intimidation and abuse of executive power???

It certainly won’t auger well on an international front. :?

A dirty trick of political victimisation that will cause international scandal and disgrace.

That is how UNC Political Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar described the deportation yesterday of her campaign strategist, United States citizen Bernie Campbell.

Campbell was detained at Piarco International Airport on Thursday night, kept in immigration custody overnight, and put on a plane back home yesterday.

Before leaving, Campbell said he was being taken in a security vehicle to a hotel to stay overnight, when the vehicle was stopped by an unmarked car and he was questioned by unknown men.

Campbell, said to be traumatised, was also a member of the campaign team that helped craft the campaign of US President Barack Obama.

The US Embassy has asked Government for an explanation on why Campbell was deported. Government has denied having a hand in the action. (See related stories)

The law allows a foreigner to work in Trinidad without a work permit for up to a month in a 12-month period.

But Persad-Bissessar said yesterday, ’I believe the people of this country are not blind (or) stupid. Whilst it may distract from our campaign to some extent, it will not damage our campaign to the extent that we win. In spite of every dirty trick of the Manning team, we will win.’

She said two days before Campbell’s arrival, two other members of the Obama team flew into Trinidad without incident. They left Trinidad yesterday, with no plans of returning.

Persad-Bissessar said, ’This could have serious repercussions on our good diplomatic relationship with the United States. I condemn it (deportation).’

She said Campbell’s firm did similar political work around the world.

According to a press release from the UNC, Campbell arrived on American Airlines flight 1819 on Thursday, and upon presentation of his travel documents was informed he was ’denied entry on the advisement of the Minister of National Security’.

Persad-Bissessar stated in the release, ’Campbell was given a document which pertained to his denial of entry which he declined to sign. He was left standing in what had become an empty terminal for well over an hour. Eventually he was informed that he would be taken by security to a hotel nearby and then brought to the airport in the morning (yesterday) to be placed on the American Airlines flight scheduled for departure at that time.’

Persad-Bissessar said Campbell left the airport in a security vehicle which was intercepted en route to the hotel by an unmarked car. The security guard and Campbell were questioned by two men, she said. Campbell returned to the airport and was escorted by airport security on board American Airlines flight number 1818.

Persad- Bissessar stated, ’The team said they have never been subjected to any rejection from any of the countries visited before and were surprised by the experience encountered here. My party and I condemn the high-handed, authoritarian display of power perpetrated by the Manning administration upon the legitimate democratic exercise of the party in conducting its election campaign.’

She said the deportation would be ’reported negatively across all diplomatic channels and via international media networks worldwide’.

Persad-Bissessar added: ’While Calder Hart, a citizen of Canada and the former chairman of UDeCOTT, who is the subject of a criminal probe, is allowed to go freely and taken through the VIP channels upon his last entry to the island, the political strategist employed by the United National Congress was denied entry into Trinidad and Tobago.’

National Security Minister Martin Joseph has denied that United States national Bernie Campbell was deported on an order from the Minister of National Security.

’No such deportation order was issued or signed by the Minister of National Security or an immigration officer,’ the ministry stated in a release yesterday.

’Rather, Mr Bernard Campbell, a citizen of the United States of America, was denied entry into Trinidad and Tobago in accordance with section 8 (1) (q) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 18: 01.’

This states: ’Any person who from information or advice which, in the opinion of the minister is reliable information or advice, is likely to be an undesirable inhabitant of, or visitor to Trinidad and Tobago.’

The UNC yesterday accused the Government of political victimisation over the decision to deport Campbell, who had been hired to advise the party during its election campaign.

The party said Campbell arrived on American Airlines flight 1819 on Thursday, but after presenting his travel documents was informed he was ’denied entry on the advisement of the Minister of National Security’.

Campbell was detained overnight under guard and returned to the United States yesterday morning.

The United States Embassy in Port of Spain has requested information from the Government on the deportation of US citizen Bernie Campbell.

The political strategist was contracted by the United National Congress (UNC) to assist in the party’s campaign for the May 24 general election.

’We are aware of the incident, but he is a private citizen and we are limited with how much we can discuss on it. Trinidad and Tobago is within its sovereign rights to exercise its laws, but we have contacted the Government for information on what happened,’ a US Embassy official said yesterday.

UNC Political Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar introduced Campbell an hour after the election date was announced on April 16. She said following a presentation made by Ernie Ross of Ross Advertising Ltd on the former Obama campaign team, a decision was taken to bring in Campbell.

’Mr Ross had prepared our message (to the electorate) in package and at that point the Obama team came in, to assist with the marketing. Thereafter, on my instruction, we asked the firm, Ross Advertising Ltd, to contact the former Obama campaign team and it is in response to that Mr Bernie Campbell is here today. We are very happy to welcome them on board, I have today finalised our arrangement with them. We good to go. They will be fully onboard in our campaign,’ she said that day.

After learning that the election date was announced, Campbell said: ’Today feels very familiar ... this is what it feels like when change starts. It is great to be here with another transformational leader who is about to bring change to her country.’

This, in my mind, is an absolute blatant and disgusting use, or misused, of authority.

Now we have the world eyes on us boys... smile for the camera.

If I was still deciding who to vote for... this would have been the factor that makes up my mind.

i hope that when the US government decides or takes the stance of denying our citizens visas and entry to their country for no reason , or even their schools and then starts deporting trinis in a big way, we don't blame anybody but the manning dictatorship and his useless government . If he was threat why didn't deny him last two weeks? why do you allow Calder Hart of all to people to rape our country then give him diplomatic treatment at our airports.

I hope they start to deport all those illegal PNM supporters first then start refusing them entry whenever they try visit or work. Apparently Manning wants our citizens to be treated like Mexicans

For all you blind , stupid PNMites who will support Manning and his useless band of misfits no matter how much money they steal , or how much of our children they kidnap or kill your beloved leader has now started Political persecution.

be afraid be very afraid ....apparently those who do not support the dictator will be deported.

^^ I hope that DOESN'T happen. This is truly a sad day for Trinidad that the government has to stoop so low to try and win an election. Best they bring back the voting machines and done. :?

this foolish action by current administration will only seek to strengthen the resolve of those in the opposition and will only turn more voters away from the current administration.

This world is crying out for righteous government, man cannot rule themselves apart from God.

That decision to deport Mr Campbell will have some really negative effects on T&T.

The fact that Campbell is a citizen of the UNITED STATES, with US being one of our closest allies.

This will not sit well.

Got this in an email today:

[quote]THE POLITICAL LEADER OF THE UNITED NATIONAL CONGRESS

MEDIA RELEASE

The Political Leader of the United National Congress (UNC), Mrs. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, condemns the abuse of power and the act of political victimisation of the opposition party and harassment of a U.S. citizen whose firm conducts similar political work around the world.

On Thursday April 23rd, 2010, Mr. Bernie Campbell arrived on American Airlines 1819 and upon presentation of his travel documents was informed that he was denied entry on the advisement of the Minister of National Security. Mr. Campbell was given a document which pertained to his denial of entry which he declined to sign. He was left standing in what had become an empty terminal for well over an hour.

Eventually he was informed that he would be taken by security to a hotel nearby and then brought to the airport in the morning (today) to be placed on the American Airlines flight scheduled for departure at that time. After leaving the airport in the security vehicle, it was intercepted en route to the hotel by an unmarked car and the security with Mr. Campbell was questioned by two men. The security guard informed Mr. Campbell that he was unaware as to who the men who intercepted the vehicle were and advised him that he would be safer at the airport. Mr. Campbell was then driven back to the airport by the security where he stayed until his departure. He was escorted by airport security on board American Airlines flight number 1818.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar explains, "The team said they have never been subjected to any rejection from any of the countries visited before and were surprised by the experience encountered here. My Party and I condemn the high handed authoritarian display of power perpetrated by the Manning administration upon the legitimate democratic exercise of the party in conducting its election campaign."

She went on to state, as a result of this incident, "Members of the Obama team employed by the UNC, left the island this morning and due to the harassment of their colleague will not be returning. They have, however, confirmed that the work to be conducted in the campaign will be provided from the United States."

The Political Leader declares, "This will, however, only serve to strengthen the resolve of all concerned and the electorate will be the ultimate judge of the dictatorial behaviour that typifies the Patrick Manning administration. This will, however, only serve to strengthen the resolve of all concerned and the electorate will be the ultimate judge of the dictatorial behaviour that typifies the Patrick Manning administration. The UNC sees the denial of entry of Mr. Campbell as an international outrage and scandal which will be reported negatively across all diplomatic channels and via international media networks worldwide. The party formally extends to Mr. Campbell and his firm A.K.P.D. its sincerest regrets over the incident and pledges to issue a formal, official apology to him and the people of the United States on May 25th when the party forms the government on behalf of all our citizens who value the cordial and close relationship."

She adds, "While Calder Hart, a citizen of Canada and the former Chairman of UDeCOTT, who is the subject of a criminal probe is allowed to go freely and taken through the VIP channels upon his last entry to the island, the political strategist employed by the United National Congress, Bernie Campbell a citizen of the United States was denied entry into Trinidad and Tobago by the Immigration authorities and escorted by security guards back on a flight leaving this morning."

The UNC had contracted the firm A.K.P.D to assist with certain key aspects of their election campaign. Mr. Campbell entered the island initially on April 15th 2010. Mr. Campbell, a seasoned political strategist and speech writer for several leading U.S. political figures declared to the local immigration upon his first visit that he was here on business as a consultant. After concluding discussions with the Political Leader of the UNC, Bernie Campbell was formally engaged by the party. He then left Trinidad on April 19th 2010 with the expectation that he would return to formally assume his assignment.

The United States Embassy has been informed of the incident.

Under Regulation 10 of the Immigration Regulations, made under the Immigration Act, Chapter 18:01 of the laws of Trinidad and Tobago, a foreign national can work locally for a period not exceeding one month in a twelve month period. Upon re-entering the island to assume his duties Mr. Campbell would therefore have been eligible to do so under this section of the law.

The Ministry of National Security has issued a media release stating that no deportation order was issued or signed by the Ministry of National Security or any immigration officer. However, Mr. Cambpell was denied entry pursuant to Section 8(1) (q) of the Immigration Act 18:01 which states “any person who from information or advice which in the opinion of the Minister is reliable information or advice is likely to be an undesirable inhabitant or, or visitor to Trinidad and Tobago.â€
