Solar-powered water heaters...

Postby Humes » February 14th, 2011, 9:41 am

Does anyone here use a solar-powered water heater?

I'm interested in getting one. What's the cost, upkeep etc? And how well do they work?

It lookin real cool, but no indication of price on the webpage is always worrying.

Hope it eh over 10k. And I wonder if you can divert some of that energy from the panel to other things, like outdoor lighting...

i cud be dead wrong eh...but that 'solar panel' doesn't look like a photovoltaic array
it looks like pipes which is used to heat the water directly without first converting to electricity

and if thats the case.....there is no 'extra' energy to be utilised

You're quite right. The term solar panel normally refers to the silicon/glass/funny-looking wossname that produces electricity.

Personally, that solar water-heating system described above isn't as "eco-friendly" as those that have the tank higher than the heat-collector, as this one requires a pump to send the water up to the heater/wossname/thingy.
(of course, one can then argue that having a bloody great tank of hot water balancing on the roof above your head (each gallon of water weighs ten pounds) doesn't sound so friendly when your roof's integrity depends on the majority of the termites in it to be holding hands most of the time  )

Technically speaking, if this is used to replace an existing electrical heater, then there would be a 'surplus' of budgeted energy... hence, "extra" energy...

In a system like what bugwanna described, does the water stay hot overnight?

I actually saw the reverse of that once on a Modern Marvels...something looking like that keeping a library cold whole day.

wasn't there gov't talk about adding to the electrical pool/grid (via solar panels, wind turbines) when your home is producing more than it uses at the moment and in times of need/high load you take it back from the grid???

Cool, but they should really get a proper website going in that case.

if you want to save money put in a fame showerhead heater
that's the cheapest way to go and you just replace the element every year or two.

If I can offer any advice, is to do what pugboy suggest and get one or three shower head plugin water heaters... If it's just for hot shower solutions.

If is for environmental reasons/ green energy purpose, the thread already have info

If is for the tax break against the Greedy Establishment, TISP/Pension Plan allowance is up to 50k ah year, take advantage of that before imbutt clamp on it. UTC was offering some flexible annuities some time ago.
