Hey guys, Im trying to put together a small grill using some stuff I have around the work place but Im not sure what to use wrt the "grill" top. Im thinking to use some "chicken wire", the fine mesh and intertwine a couple layers together but Im unsure if that will withstand the heat? Will that work?

Also how do you sanitize the grill parts? I saw another member there say something about "burning it''?

My plan is to use an old rim about 14''w x 5''D to make up the coal area and cover that with a mesh cover? Would this work? Thanks

^ yeah the old rim will work, if its a steel rim...u can put paint remover then burn it to get off everything that remains and the heat also kills off any other unwanted stuff

chicken wire will burn in no time
either u get an old grill from an oven
make ur own using 3/8 and 1/4" steel
get expanding metal wire mesh

PROPANE OR LPG FOR BBQ GRILL

Postby Hance Rampersad » May 2nd, 2011, 11:00 am

Hey Fellas,

I am thinking of purchasing one of those Char-Boril Infra-Red Grills in pricesmart that use propane tanks. I know you can convert from propane to normal 20lb LPG for convenience since propane hard to refill with few places ( unless you buy a new tank) , what I would like to know is if there is any real advantage to using propane over LPG ( normal cooking gas) maybe taste etc ..I am not sure, any advice welcome.

it will work the pretty much the same
all the liquified tanked gas are more or less same

its only with a mains supply of natural gas like what a hotel would have is where
there would be a big difference requiring changing the jets in the gas burners

This isn't correct. Propane is a clean burning gas and thus does not add any fumes or smoke to the food. LPG does have an odor and emits fumes when lit and thus will add this aroma to the food. You can actually taste the difference between propane cooked food and lpg cooked food.

I just take the empty BBQ grill tank to RAMCO and they refill and charge based on the weight - no probs at all, takes about 15mins for the entire process. No need to keep buying new tanks all the time.

I don't know who much of a difference you will notice with LPG vs propane or if it's really that much - while LPG does have a distinct odor, I've never found food that taste like LPG

The odor of unburnt LPG gas is added to the liquid so you can identify if there is a leak. While it's burning I never noticed that propane smells any different.

Honestly never knew there was a difference.... damn... that what i get for not watching King of the Hill ?

u could get it by Ramco LPG is Propane just when you buy a BBQ pit it comes with its own tank most of the time smaller than the 20lb cylinder we use for kitchen or firecrackers but Porpane is LPG Or (cooking Gas)

searched it on the net and it basically saying propane is an additive to LPG and mainly used for colder climates to promote the boiling of the LPG.

I've been using LPG just fine...

I've had propane cooked bbq in miami and lpg locally and can't taste the difference
maybe your burners were burning too rich(incomplete, yellow flame)

the odor is supposedly added as a safety
just like how gas used to be colored, eg aviation was blue and super red
household natural gas in north america stinks the most

next project with no time frame in mind
looking at 2800+sq inches of rack space
more than 4 times the cooking area of a big money brand name gas grill or 55 gal drum pit, lol

installed the thermometer, sprayed the inside with cooking oil and fired it up
getting a cool 300-350 with not much coal however i forgot to take proper benchmarks
as how long it maintains temps before it starts dropping

that is good temps, you prolly want to try running it lower like 230-250 and see how long it runs for how much coals and what vent opening required
you might need to play with basket size also
eg to get a long cook you might need more coals with a full lit layer on top of them
but for a shorter high temp cook you could pile them narrower or to one side of the basket

put in a few hours this afternoon, probably won't have time until next week so got the sides built.
Cut sheeting with jigsaw and put onto frame along with angle for shelf racks
Have a few more shelf racks to put in, total 6 or 7.

well you obviously got well over 325f for it to burn
invest in a good digital meat thermometer so you can gauge doneness before its too late
I bought a thermapen the other day, cost an arm and a leg but worth it

btw, where did you buy that chicken you brought the other day ?
it was quite large for the price

I just bought a box of ceramic wool for a new project
cost me $330

yup rabbit meat is very lean so it dries out quick
try a brine on it first to help keep some moisture in and give a lil coat of oil before throwing on the grill
