yeah plus vat, not duties i think... look at some other carrier sites, they have 2,3,4,5 year contracts for the iphone... maybe they may offer a contract free version (like in canada), but expect to pay through the tooth for that, in this way i happy with staying with tstt/bmobile

i was now gonna look.
i wonder if they will offer it like canada i guess we go see by the end of the month hopefully cuz they said weeks not months.
I will take a factory unlocked iPhone any day tho. I'm never going to rely on an unlock again and sorry im not switching from Digicel.
What i wish bmobile would offer is the IMEI unlocking service tho for their iPhones. That would be great. Only then would i think about it. (canada carriers offer it)

Repeat of warning

Just a warning to any iOS 5 compatible device owner who may by chance get a hand on the new upcoming firmware. Devices updated to iOS 5 beta can not be restored to earlier versions of iOS. Of course they will be upgradable to future betas & the final release.

whatsapp.
but there is also pingchat which is free and liveprofile.

You need to go into tstt probably and activate your data plan.

For prepaid it is quite expensive and its edge which is slow.

if you want to try it, you go in Settings>General>Network> Cellular Data Network

and for Digicel, the APN its: web.digiceltt.com
bmobile its: bconnected

With regard to today’s WWDC keynote, we were right about a lot of things. Twitter/iOS. Revamped notifications. Widgets (though they didn’t call them “widgets” on stage, the weather and stock areas in the notifications pull-down are widgets). iOS Messages (okay, this was more of a dream that somehow came true). July launch for OS X Lion. No “iPhone 4S”. iCloud WWDC launch. iOS 5 fall launch.

But we weren’t right about everything. Namely, where the hell was Nuance and/or Siri in today’s keynote?

We’re still looking into this, but here’s the latest we’re hearing. At least three of our original sources on this were “very surprised” not to hear anything during the keynote today. One noted that leading up to the last minute, they were sure new, elaborate voice features in iOS 5 were going to be announced on stage. It didn’t happen. Apple has been known to pull things at the last second. But this may go deeper.

Another source wonders if our stories on the negotiations between Apple and Nuance didn’t throw a wrench in things? Nuance is known to be just as hard of a negotiator as Apple is. And if the rumored features are coming to iOS, they know that Apple absolutely needs them.

But none of this changes the fact that Nuance technology has already been found in Apple software (OS X Lion, to be exact). And multiple source claim Nuance software is already running at Apple’s new datacenter in North Carolina. Still, the finalized deals may simply not be in place just yet, so Apple couldn’t say anything on stage. If that’s true, the thought is that Nuance technology will still be a part of iOS 5, it would just be included closer to the actual launch in the fall.

This may make sense as we noted from the beginning that it’s entirely possible that at first, Nuance (and Siri) technology will only be used for apps created by Apple. They would then presumably be opened to third-party developers at a later time. If that’s the case, Apple did not need to show off the technology today to get developers ready. And they can add it when they like.

Or it could be that Apple scrapped plans entirely for one reason or another. But again, we don’t believe that to be the case at this time. More likely than that is that the implementation just may not be done yet.

And the fact that the Chief Mobile Technology Architect at Nuance was in the audience today at WWDC is very interesting to say the least. Even more interesting is something else we had heard, but haven’t been able to confirm — he may be about to start working at Apple. (He has not returned our request for comment.)

Also interesting is that Roger Rosner, Apple’s VP of Productivity Applications who is believed to be in charge of the Siri/Nuance stuff at Apple, was on stage today. But instead of voice features, he demoed Documents in the Cloud and a few other new things. That may have been tweaked at the last second.

Now that iOS 5 is out there in developers hands, we can probably expect some code digging shortly, and we wouldn’t be surprised if they find more references to Nuance in the code. Apple did tout hundreds of new features/tools in iOS 5 today, and only gave stage time to a handful.

This video shows the first setup of iOS 5 simply using your Apple ID, demonstrating one of the big new features of iOS 5 termed "PC Free".

During the keynote this morning, I couldn't help but think that Apple's new notification system sounded strinkingly familiar. Android users have already been swiping down for notifications for quite some time now, and while the notifications panel is very bare bones, the Android market is chock full of widgets that display the weather, your email and calendar updates, and more.

Image

Apple's mobile user interface is vastly different, with no ability to customize the home screen and enable widgets. So, iOS 5's notifications panel lumps everything in one drop-down screen. Admittedly, it's a little nicer to look at everything in one place (and already iOS is so much prettier), but in terms of functionality Android did it first.

Since we don't currently have access to iOS 5 to actually interact with the notifications panel, we'll have to wait and see what it's like during the update's release in the fall. One question that we're definitely pondering, though: will this new notification system affect the iPhone's battery life? Or will we be able to opt in and out like we have with iOS push notifications?

And, will the notifications bar at the top ever get this cluttered?

MuscleNerd has confirmed to iClarified that most devices can be downgraded from iOS 5 beta 1 to iOS 4.x so long as you have your SHSH Blobs saved.

The only exception is the iPad 2 which cannot be downgraded at all until a bootrom-level or iboot-level exploit is developed.

This information may be helpful to developers who are thinking about upgrading their device but may need to revert back to iOS 4.x in the future.

For anyone else who is thinking of upgrading to the iOS 5 beta, make sure you remember that your baseband will be updated, affecting your ability to unlock. Downgrading your firmware will not downgrade your baseband. So update with caution.

Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) will be required for Lion.

If you are using Leopard (10.5) or less, you must first upgrade to Snow Leopard.

Amazon shows it backordered 2-5 weeks, (available from some 3rd parties), but the online Apple Store has it for $29USD plus shipping. Note that if you are running a version of Mac OS X before 10.5, you should buy the $129 Mac Box Set ($99.99 at Amazon) which includes Snow Leopard, iLife '11, and iWork, but that is a legal/moral obligation, not a technical one. The Snow Leopard DVD will work on any supported Mac, regardless of which OS is installed on it (or even on a new drive).

Not sure what version you are running? Go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac" and look in the window which appears (see image above). If it says anything starting with 10.6 you are running Snow Leopard. Anything less? Time to upgrade.

(If you are running Snow Leopard, make sure you are running at least version 10.6.6 and get the Mac App Store app!)

You may also want to make sure your Mac is compatible. Apple specifies "[y]our Mac must have an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor to run Lion." That information is shown in the "Processor" line of the "About Mac" window, shown above.

At US$29.99, Mac OS X Lion was the most expensive product discussed at WWDC today. It's not as though the next version of the Mac's operating system had a lot of pricing competition at the keynote. iOS 5 will be a free upgrade to users with supported hardware, and iCloud's services -- which used to cost $99/year under MobileMe -- are all completely free. In fact, other than Lion itself, the only thing Apple announced at WWDC that costs anything at all was iTunes Match at $25 a year.

One of the major anti-Apple memes over the lifetime of the Mac has been that Apple's products are far more expensive than those of its competitors. While there are arguments both for and against that line of thinking for Macs and equivalently-configured PCs, the iPad's pricing compared to other tablets' blows that argument out of the water, and Apple's software prices undercut those of Windows by an astonishing margin, as demonstrated in the graphic above.

Windows 7 comes in a spread of flavors, while Mac OS X Lion comes in only two: the standard $29.99 user edition and an upgraded server edition that costs $50 more. Both will be downloads from the Mac App Store, and while there's no official word yet, based on a cursory reading of the current terms and conditions it seems that both Lion and Lion Server Edition will be installable on up to ten machines associated with a user's iTunes account.

So our graphic is wrong in one sense: while you could buy multiple copies of Lion for the same price as the equivalent Windows software, you don't actually have to. If anything, this makes Lion an even more economical prospect than Windows. Even if you want to make the argument that it'd take a Server Edition upgrade to put Lion's feature set on parity with Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (an assessment with which we'd politely disagree), Windows 7 is still only installable on one machine. Therefore, even with "Lion Server Edition" costing a total of $80, that's $80 for a 10-machine license under the current terms and conditions versus $220 to install Windows 7 Ultimate Edition on one.

Put another way: for the amount of money you'd pay for a single-machine license for Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, you could install Mac OS X Lion and its server tools on 20 machines and still have 60 bucks left over. If you're like us and you think Lion doesn't need the server tools to be on parity with Windows 7 Ultimate, you could install Lion on 70 machines and buy yourself a six-pack for the same price as one Windows 7 Ultimate license.

Apple charged $129 for Mac OS X Leopard and older iterations of its operating system, which were still considered bargains against the pricing of equivalent Windows packages. But Lion's incredibly low cost compared to that of Windows merely demonstrates what we've known all along: Apple is at its heart a hardware company. It makes money off of its hardware, but the only purpose of the software is to make the hardware sing. iTunes? Free. iCloud? Free. iOS? Free. Mac OS X? 30 bucks.

Microsoft, on the other hand, is primarily a software company dependent on hardware makers to run its software. XBox 360 and some minor pilot projects aside, Microsoft makes an overwhelming majority of its money off licenses of Windows and Office editions. With that in mind, it's little wonder that Microsoft's software costs so much more... or that Apple is currently cleaning Microsoft's clock financially.

Apple's wireless carrier partners were surprised to learn of Apple's new iOS 5 messaging feature during Monday's WWDC keynote, according to a new report.

iOS 5, which is due out this fall, features a new messaging service, allowing iPad and iPod touch users to "join the conversation." iMessage allows unlimited text messages via Wi-Fi or 3G from one mobile iOS device to another. Built right into the Messages app, users can send text, photos, videos, locations and contacts.

iMessage will also support delivery receipts and option read receipts, along with secure encryption for text messages. Conversations can also be tracked on multiple devices with the same owner.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball reports that "a well-informed little birdie" told him that "Apple’s phone carrier partners around the world found out about iMessages when we did: during today’s keynote." Gruber's industry sources have been reliable in the past.

The news of Apple's iMessage may have been quite the shock for wireless providers, which bring in substantial revenue from SMS plans. Gruber himself noted that he plans to cancel his SMS plan as soon as iMessage is available. The feature will also compete against a number of iOS apps that offer SMS-like functionality.

Image

iMessage has drawn comparisons to Research in Motion's proprietary BlackBerry Messaging service. Though BBM initially served as a draw to the platform, RIM has struggled as consumers have increasingly chosen Apple's iPhone and Google Android in recent years. AT&T chief Ralph de la Vega said last week that AT&T customers have been "choosing other products rather than traditional BlackBerries."

Apple has at times been at odds with the wireless carriers over new features in the iPhone. Late last year, European carriers threatened to discontinue subsidies for the iPhone after reports emerged that Apple was developing an embedded SIM card that would allow customers to shop for wireless service directly from the Apple store.

A subsequent report suggested that Apple had backed down from its plans because of carrier opposition. The France Telecom CEO said last month that Apple had agreed on a compromise to use a smaller card instead of an e-SIM.

In addition to iMessage, iOS 5 packs 200 new user features and 1,500 new APIs, including an all-new Notification Center, a PC-free design and Newsstand, a new way to purchase and organize newspaper and magazine subscriptions. The free software update will be available for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch (fourth generation) and iPod touch (third generation) this fall, though some features may not be available on all products.

According to a tweet posted by @MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone Dev-Team, which has authored many jailbreak-related tools and tutorials, iOS 5′s new automatic over-the-air updates shouldn’t make jailbreaking harder.

over-the-air delta updates of iOS should be fine for JBers (even if Apple didn’t let you disable them, the JB itself can)

Concerns arose, since automatic over-the-air updates, one of the flagship features of iOS 5, could possibly break jailbreaks whenever a new version of the firmware is released, essentially making a permanent and stable jailbreak unfeasible. While that might be true, a reliable jailbreak would also be able to disable automatic updating altogether.

Right now, whenever an update for iOS comes out, users need to download the whole operating system image from iTunes, then hook up the device. The new iOS 5 method would allow users to get smaller updates over the air, similarly to the way it has always been on the Android platform. Of course, the loss of that feature can be a huge letdown for jailbreakers, although many will definitely prefer a totally open device to a more efficient one.

We’re discovering some very interesting and little advertised new features following yesterday’s unveiling of Apple’s iOS 5 software. For instance, did you know there’s a new setting allowing you to tell your iPhone to blink its LED flash on incoming calls and alerts? We’ve also learned about brand new AssistiveTouch section in Settings where you can control your multi-touch experience and even draw custom gestures. Plus, the four-finger pinch gesture that mimics the functionality of the home button? It’s back!

It originally appeared in the first beta of iOS 4.3, but was disabled in subsequent releases unless you were a registered developer who enabled your device for development in Xcode. Needless to say, the home screen pinch has become a jailbreaker’s favorite tweak and it’s been especially popular with iPad owners because performing multi-fingered gestures felt more natural on the tablet’s larger canvas compared to the iPhone’s smallish screen. Even though Steve Jobs made no mention of them during the keynote talk, Apple has detailed new iPad multitasking gestures on its site.

Image

Reader Drew sent in screenshots below depicting a new section in the Settings app, dedicated to touch-related assistive technologies. For starters, you can now use iPhone with adaptive accessories and control touch responsiveness using a slider. You can also use a horizontal zig-zag motion to open the menu with touch settings and even draw your own custom gesture to replace the zig-zag motion. Even though this is just scratching the surface compared to the wealth of customizable multitouch gestures available system-wide on jailbroken devices, it’s great to see Apple continuing to perfect the iOS multitouch interface with new gestures.

Image

Image

Coming this Fall, iOS 5 will bring along a boatload of exciting new stuff designed for the same devices as its predecessor. Specifically, Jobs has confirmed during yesterday’s keynote talk that iOS 5 will run on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPad 2 and third- and fourth-generation iPod touch. If history is anything to go by, some of the new features won’t work on older devices due to constrained resources.
Unfortunately, the iOS 5 features page reveals nothing about possible limitations on legacy hardware. Bloggers, however, are beginning to discover what has been implemented in iOS 5 for iPhone 3GS and what features have been stripped away. Take it from a guy in the below clip, “In my opinion, iOS 5 beta works flawlessly on iPhone 3GS”, he concludes. Let’s begin with what works first.

You’re probably wondering about the new Notification Center feature which was greeted with an erupting applause during the keynote. You can sigh a breathe of relief, it runs without any limitations on the iPhone 3GS. Just pull your finger down from the top of the screen to reveal a handy list of all the notifications on your phone, in addition to nicely animated live stocks and weather widgets. Twitter integration also works on the iPhone 3GS, as does the digital Newsstand plus the accompanying store section. The camera app features grid lines and lets you lock the exposure and brightness settings, but image editing (red eye removal, cropping and magic wand) is not supported on the iPhone 3GS. Likewise, iOS 5 Safari on iPhone 3GS supports Reading List, but the new tab bar which sits right below the address bar and the Reader feature seem to be missing (both have been demoed during the keynote on both an iPhone 4 and iPad 2). Maybe this guy has forgotten to check out the corresponding applications’ preferences in the Settings app.

The iPhone Dev Team’s MuscleNerd has confirmed via his Twitter account that iOS 5 has been successfully jailbroken, adding the hack will work on the final iOS 5 version when it ships this Fall. According to Ultrasnow.ca, it’s a tethered jailbreak so you will have to connect your device to a computer each time it restarts (until they develop an untethered jailbreak). “Cydia works fine from quick testing (I installed SSH)”

Taiwanese trade publication DigiTimes reported this morning that OmniVision has won a contract with Apple that will see both Sony and OmniVision supply Apple with eight-megapixel CMOS image sensors, presumably for a fifth-generation iPhone.

OmniVision has grabbed a majority of total CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders placed by Apple for the fifth-generation iPhone, market sources have claimed. Meanwhile, power amplifier (PA) supplier Avago Technologies has landed orders for the WCDMA version of the device for its first time, according to the sources. About 90 percent of the CIS orders for Apple’s new iPhone will be supplied by OmniVision, while Sony takes up the remainder, the sources said. The upcoming device will feature a built-in 8-megapixel camera, the sources added. TSMC will use BSI (backside illumination) process technology at its Fab 14 to produce CISs used in the new version of iPhone, the sources revealed.

We previously turned your attention to OmniVision’s latest OV5690 module, basically an improved camera sensor that should help Apple build portable gadgets that are thinner while improving image quality and video capture resolution to 1080p. Note that OmniVision is Apple’s prime supplier of CMOS sensors for iOS gear. Additionally, 9to5Mac first reported that Sony might supply rival Apple with cameras for iPhones, maybe even iPods.

Yea... as i said before... carrier.plist are now handled differently. You need to have a modded carrier plist in order to have those settings even have a chance at taking effect.
Also the file location has changed so that serves no purpose unless you willing to go in (like in the post on my blog) and mod it yourself.

I installed it on another AT&T iPhone 4 that has an AT&T sim in it, its obviously buggy but it's ridiculously good for an early beta. I'm at work now and I only have my bmobile one with me but when i checked last night I think it was something like 04.11.04.

I'll pop my gevey pro into this iPhone when I get home and I'll post back to let you guys know. I really really like iOS 5 so far tho.

just plugged in my iPhone 4 (bmobile) to iTunes and a message came up "There is an update to your carrier definitions" or something like that. It took about a second to update

I'm not jailbroken so I dont have the callerID fix or carrier plist from cydia.

it didnt seem to make any difference in my recent calls list though - still have 868-***-**** numbers showing even though i have that number in my phonebook without the 868

Tweeting photos is, so so slick. It displays on Twitter as powered by Photobucket, and it’s from iOS.

There’s a new option to print out from the Maps app.

You can make new albums right from the device itself in Photos.

You can move and add photos to albums.

Doesn’t look iMessage is fully baked in here yet.

You can customize the default alert times — so now when you enter a calendar entry, you don’t have to set the default alert time you like — I’m a 15 minute calendar alert type of guy.

Email flagging is enabled in this beta, as well as S/MIME support. Go into the message and tap “mark”.

It seems that Reminders sync with Exchange (Tasks basically), but you can’t set location-based reminders if you’re on Exchange, just with iCloud. You can selectively choose where to sync the reminder though, it’s just not streamlined if you use Exchange.

You can set the caller ID for FaceTime calls, so if you call someone, you can choose it to display your cellular number or email address.

In the weather app, there is a new pane for a current location which will show you weather for wherever you are.

When syncing with iTunes you can use the device normally ‚ no more syncing screen!

You can delete individual calls from the call list

On the iPhone version the iPod app is now separated into the Music & Videos apps.

When iOS 5 is released for the iPhone this fall, users will have the ability to purchase new, custom text message tones from the new iTunes Tone Store.

The new digital storefront is Apple's response to complaints that the company does not offer enough unique sounds to be played when a text message is received. Apple greatly expanded the number of SMS tones last year with iOS 4.2, but the new iTunes Tone Store looks to add even more options.

In the first developer beta of iOS 5, users can enter the iPhone Settings application, and choose "Sounds" and "Text Tone" as they currently can in iOS 4. But in the Text Tone menu, a new link is now available at the top that reads "Buy More Tones."

While the link is included in the operating system, the iTunes Tone Store is not yet live, as iOS 5 will not be available to the masses until this fall. Selecting the link to the store currently launches the mobile iTunes Store application, but users are only presented with the existing Ringtones page.

The new iTunes Tone Store is one of more than 200 user-facing features that will be added to iOS 5. The functionality was glossed over at this week's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, where iOS 5 was shown publicly for the first time.
