from Apple's site:

If you buy iPhone for T-Mobile, it will arrive with a nano-SIM card already installed that you can activate by visiting an Apple Retail Store or a T-Mobile store or by calling T-Mobile. If you buy a SIM-free iPhone, you will need to purchase a GSM-compatible nano-SIM card separately.

Don't listen to the naysayers. Too many people have purchased and successfully used the contract free tmobile 5s. Mine came with a sim as well.

Just to confirm does the iphone have any carrier branding? I don't recall ever seeing any

Absolutely zero carrier branding. One of the best things Apple succeeded with imo. Hated seeing Tmobile dis or AT&T that on phones I bought pre iphone.

Usually mid to late November, in the US anyway. In places like Canada, the UK, they are available unlocked from the start.

Apple Watch name was registered by Apple in T&T of all places!!!

http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2014/09/10/nam ... nd-tobago/

For months, tech consumers speculated on what Apple Inc.AAPL +3.07% would name its new smartwatch. Predictions that it would be dubbed iWatch were proven wrong when the company on Tuesday lifted the curtain on the wearable device: Apple Watch.

But in fact, Apple had tipped its hand months earlier, planting clues thousands of miles away in a trademark office in the southern Caribbean.

On March 11, the company submitted a trademark application for “Apple Watch” in Trinidad and Tobago, an archipelagic republic off the coast of Venezuela with a population just above one million.

Why Trinidad and Tobago?

Under U.S. law, a company seeking to register a federal trademark starts to secure initial rights when it files an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. “If your company is the first to file a trademark application, your company is first in line to obtain the trademark registration in the United States,” says Josh Gerben, a trademark attorney in Washington, D.C. It’s what he described as a “first-come, first-served system.”

Here’s where Trinidad and Tobago enters the picture. The nation and the U.S. are signatories to an international treaty allowing applicants to secure rights in a foreign country and then transfer them over to their home country.

Under the agreement, an applicant that files in Trinidad and Tobago has a six-month window to apply for the same trademark in the U.S. without resetting the clock. In other words, if Apple applies for an “Apple Watch” trademark in the U.S. by Thursday, its application would be treated as if it were filed six months ago on March 11. So if another company trying to acquire the same trademark filed its application in the U.S. after that date, it would take a backseat to Apple’s.

So Apple got a head start in securing trademark rights for Apple Watch without the publicity that a domestic application would certainly generate.

A spokeswoman for Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Hemraj Dookie, who processes trademark applications for the intellectual property office of the Ministry of Legal Affairs in Trinidad and Tobago, told Law Blog that Apple has submitted more than 250 trademark applications over the years.

Before Apple fans start scouring trademark offices around the globe, they should take heed: Foreign trademark filings can also be red herrings. As WSJ earlier reported, Apple last year filed a trademark application for “iWatch” in Japan, leading many to assume the company had already settled on that name.

I am wondering based on app sizes, with the additional screen real estate, would storage go up? I remember when retina came into play 8bg phones were feeling the pinch. Wonder how far 16gb would go, especially with the next size skipping 32gb and going to 64gb.

Off contract phones are still locked to their respective carriers, hence the unlocked models.

Difference between off contract and no contract.

Not true. I bought a TMobile iPhone 5s off contract and it worked out the box with my bmobile sim. I even posted a screenshot higher up in this thread.

It's a "buy at your own risk" if you're buying off contract as opposed to a clearly stated unlocked. Some may be lucky, others are not. I'd not play that game with apple at all. Especially since the unlocking industry in the US is really rocky. In the past as with iPhone 5 it was clear on their site that off contract is unlocked. It's a while now since i checked but i recall last year with the 5s that FAQ was no longer right under the order screen.

Never seen that thought. All reports I've seen up to today is that there are 3 tiers.

$199, 299, 399 on contract (locked)
$599, 699, 799 off contract (locked)
$649, 749, 849 unlocked

Apple again sells contract-free, carrier-locked US iPhones

The new phones will still be "locked" to AT&T and won't work with any other cellular carrier unless they're modified

An AT&T representative has confirmed that the carrier plans to offer $599 and $699 iPhones without a two-year contract starting next week, but the phones will be locked to AT&T.

Yes I've seen that so it makes me wonder what the eventual unlocked price would be. So far the Canadian prices where I normally buy are higher than during the 5s launch but not significantly.

Also the 5s from T-Mobile and unlocked are the same price ($549, 649) so I see that ($649, 749, 849) being the price for the unlocked iPhone 6 when it is released in the U.S, of course the 6 Plus adding $100 to each cost.
