Over 1 Million registered vehicles on the road in T&T in 2017

Postby stikid09 » November 30th, 2017, 3:20 pm

...more speed guns, cameras coming says AG

Image

More speed guns and speed cameras are coming.

Noting that the placement of six speed guns along the highways had resulted in 18,000 tickets, Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi said Government was in the process of adding nine more speed guns at major roads.

He said spot speed cameras would also be placed along the nation's roads “to ensure safety and obedience to the law”.

He was piloting the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment)(No.2) Bill, 2017, in the Senate on Tuesday.

The Attorney General said according to the database at Licensing Authority, there were 1,016,265 registered vehicles on the roads, while there were 654,895 licensed drivers, a ratio of almost two vehicles per driver.

He said according to data from Arrive Alive, 76 per cent of the road deaths were men, while 24 per cent were female.

Al-Rawi said in terms of the age cohort, 16 per cent of road deaths were persons in the 17-24 age group; 23 per cent were in the 25-34 age group; nine per cent were in the 35-45 age group; and in the 45-54 age group it was 17 per cent.

He said the fact that the figures were equal for those “perhaps facing a mid-life crisis” and “juvenile drivers” showed that road fatality was no respecter of age.

NOTE: More on this story in Thursday's edition of the Trinidad Express

1m registered, but surely not all 1m are road worthy or even spend time on the roads.

Still a very high ratio of vehicles to people though considering T&T is approx 1.4m people.

There needs to be an economic analysis of the impact of traffic on business and productivity.
Traffic is absolutely horrible right now and just getting worse

and we can't keep building more and more roads- one issue is space, the next one right now is lack of funds. besides more roads would just encourage ppl to have 2 and 3 cars with each member of the family driving one (or rather not driving in stand-still traffic).

why are we so addicted to cars when first world cities like New York rich & poor take public transport?

Fair enough but at least within a family let's say 2 ppl going POS they should only use 1 vehicle for that. But almost every car i see have only 1 person in it.

See .. I know we have some bright people here :D

It not really important how many cars you have in a country .
It is important how people move quickly :o

In London you can move from Surrey to Waterloo in like 16 mins in rush time
In NY City it so easy .. Public Transport baby !

In Trini you have to be on the road by 5 am .
Trini to Tobago - Better to use Imbert's private boat .

Allay does sleep too damn much :D

Sleep when you dead

because all employees use their personal vehicles for work right?
not like companies, organisations, governments, buy and register vehicles and have them parked up driverless.
how does that equate to on the road?

The Minister of Finance is obviously bent on showing that the citizens of Trinidad & Tobago have far more than he thinks they should have, he sets many policies and makes many comments based on his findings that people have too much, use too much, consume too much, take advantage of, benefit from, receive too much and so it is his DUTY to ensure this stops at once! All the citizens except those in Government.

thats a good suggestion however our traffic problem isnt a "one pill solution"

everyone has to work hand in hand to ensure that traffic is eliminated.

my suggestions < and before anyone says anything - they ALL need implementation - in some form or another>

1 remove older cars - if you want to own / drive a old car be prepared to pay relevant taxes on it and inspection and also to prevent fraud - inspection would be a tri-fold process - independent garage ( your mech has to do the necessary maintenance & fill out paper work) submit car and paper work to L.O where another inspection would be done by both your mech and a L.O officer and then the final one would be an independent body ( could be foreign company no problem) where the L.O officer & your mech meet with the final person and again - re certify.
who is going to pay the final foreign company for this inspection - well the vehicle owner of course !!!

This should be done every yr ( due to the nature of our roads and poor driving habits.)

whoever has dreams to own a silvia /skyline / supra / mazda rx series/ mitsubishi Evo series / whatever else fast car / can finally own one but be prepared to pay for it.

2 - increase public transportation. -self explanatory

3. toll booths and bus / emergency lanes - for use of police fire and ambulance. if you are photographed driving your P / H / T vehicle in this lane instant 3K fine. NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

3.a toll booths for vehicles who wish to drive in the city. cars that are registered as P and have a MINIMUM of 3 passengers pay a reduced toll fare as opposed to cars who only have one occupant H cars pay and even toll fare than P cars with 3 passengers.

to prevent ppl beating the system and plying a P car as taxi and going into and out of POS traffic cameras along with the license plate RFID tag can be used to track how much times a car enters and leaves a designated city.

cars that are for official company courier use however will be able to apply for a special RF-ID tag to be used on that car plate along with a sticker to be added onto the vehicle. both must correspond -
courier companies must PAY a fee for this tag. private companies that have a courier vehicle for their internal use MUST also pay for this.

4. speed limits - in between highway stretches where there is no houses / flyovers say for grand bazzar to munroe rd- a 120km limit.... from munroe to preysal- 80 kms. from preysal to san fernando 120kmh

5. delivery vehicles can enter the main cities between 6pm / 6am
off loading goods and parking up on the street when not in use.

6 staggered working hrs.< not everyone needs to be working 8-4..>> there are jobs that CAN be performed between 10-6 or 9-5. - please dont use your kids as an excuse- theres bus drivers for school pick ups now as well as caretakers for little ones.

lots more ideas.... but i'll add em on as time goes....

Statistics is a hell of a thing... It doesn't say who caused the accidents... It just tells you who died... The older age group statistic could have been a result of the younger age group's actions
To just automatically assume mid life crisis... Have to think past raw stats

Best statement on Tuner to date ! :D

The citizens are aways to blame and always suffer.

MP s are there for the perks and privilege - and power and money .

But at the end of the day we allow this to happen .

Hence corruption :D

He is talking about the number not really the use .

The Gov't does not like that you have cars - or nice things .

They want you to suffer. Like their supporters .

HDC low cost housing is another example .

Low salary @ Gov't jobs is another .

Next they will limit the number of children you can have :(

ALL roadworks should take place during non-peak hours. Just like what they did to replace the big pipes on CRH by Beetham last year or something. And WASA needs to coordinate with Min. of Works so that they do all necessary digging and pipe fixing BEFORE the roads are paved.

I don't don't see a problem with having more than one vehicle. Cause u can only drive one at any given time.

They are using numbers on 5hwir vocabulary to sound impressive, and because they quote statistics, they will push forward with the stance that their opinion is correct.
