KINGSTON, Jamaica – Britain's second-largest telecoms company is dismissing about 1200 workers at its Caribbean operations as part of a regional restructuring.
Cable & Wireless PLC says lay-offs at the newly-renamed LIME operation will affect employees in 13 islands. LIME spokesman Errol Miller says lay-offs will end in September 2009.
Miller said yesterday that about 100 employees in Jamaica would be affected. It is unclear how many would be dismissed in other islands. LIME currently employs about 3 700 workers and serves two million customers.
Cable & Wireless management reported in September that up to 2 500 people in the Caribbean could be laid off once restructuring was completed. It said 200 people already had been laid off as of March. (AP)
