Alpine Type R 12D2

Postby Brian Steele » February 12th, 2013, 5:21 pm

Just wondering if anyone here uses or has used the Alpine Type R 12D2 12" subs, and if so, what do you think of them?

The surrounds are becoming unglued on my Infinity 122.7Ws, so I'm thinking that it's time for a replacement. And I like the tech behind the Type Rs (well, except perhaps for them choosing to run all four wires through the spider on one side). Price looks pretty decent too.

I have been a happy user of the alpine type R subwoofers both the old and new versions.Very durable and well constructed( I had one torn down and the former, coil winding and magnet detailing was very high quality also it uses a gauge of coil wire thats a bit odd sized, very thick and long winding on former.) .I have given the older version very close to double the R.M.S rating daily and the subwoofer took it very well and in a specified enclosure. To me the older version played a bit smoother and the newer played a bit louder could be differences in boxes but all in all the alpine subs are very hard to beat in its price range I may even dare to say the best in its class.

The SQ is very close to the IDMAX

Very solid sub, well built and as you mentioned the price is excellent

The Shiva X2 is IMO an SQ dream of a driver, but alas, at that price it just is too expensive for me. The 12D2 has 20mm Xmax as opposed to the Shiva's 26(!)mm, but it is also significantly cheaper.

I've Crazy-Glued the surrounds on my 122.7Ws back on to the cone and it seems to be holding up, but I think I'm still going to go with those Alpines.
