Postby Nabil Heeralal » March 1st, 2015, 10:56 pm

I wanted to know if anyone knows where I can get the body for this car done at a reasonable price.

Mr Heeralal, nice car!

She does look like there's quite a bit to do though. I'm midway in the "rustoration" of the 69 in the video below.

The owner is choosing to NOT paint her (we're doing a "patina's look" with a flawless interior and air-ride suspension on Fuchs rims) and we're almost done the metal work...which was quite extensive in this Fastback...it was soooooooooooooo rotten!
Usually these late 60s Type 3s were victims of years of 70's style bodywork. Acetylene welding and loads of cheap local filler....and Permobel!

I can see that there's rot in your apron, both front and rear, qtrs and some poor filler work. I start by stripping to bare metal and epoxy priming as I go along. Building and fabricating parts as we go along.

Then there's the "new parts" that you'll need...the lights, lenses, the trim, rubbers, etc....they can be expensive as very little can be sourced locally for these V-dubs.

So, a good job will hardly ever be "reasonable" especially when very few and I mean very few body shops are willing these days to take on "ol car work".

My shop specializes in older cars and so does Marcus of TG Motorsport also of San Juan.

Feel free to give me a call at 770 7791 to talk. I'll be super busy from this month til May and projects/jobs like these usually take months to complete.

Calor, this 69 so far has about $30g in it so far...we rebuilt the motor and gearbox too. The welding and metal work was extreme. Entire flooring, structural too, engine bay too, lots of work.

But to break it down, for a typical resto like the one Mr Heeralal's car is calling for goes something like this:

Materials: 2 sheets electro dip $800, co2/030wire $1000 (gonna take 2 bottles and 2 rolls of wire), cutting & grinding discs $300, gallon epoxy primer $700, filler (3 buckets) $600, 1 gallon 2 part primer $400, sandpapers/sanding discs $200, putty/tape $200, paint/thinners/hardners $2000,

Labour: welder-fabricator $8000-$10,000, filler man $5000-$8000, prep man $2000, painter $1500, buff man $1500, installer/assembly $2000,

And that is just COST....garage charge etc, mechanicals, upholstery etc...a bit more to be added.

I pay my guys well, and I have one of the best fab-men and painters around. If you chinks on anything, it's showup sooner than later. If its done well as in down to metal and the epoxy over all bare metal first before fillering...you'll get approx 10-15 years out of the job.

Its not uncommon for guys to spend upwards of $100,000 on a resto. Derek Smith spent over $200,000 on this one>
