Pothole in Couva causes deadly accident

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » March 18th, 2021, 5:45 pm

A 28-year-old Coast Guard officer is dead following a road traffic accident last night in Couva.

The deceased has been identified as Joel Baron of Dookie Street, Couva.

According to police reports at about 8 pm, he was proceeding east along the Balmain Main Road on his motorcycle when upon reaching near Premium Quality Meats, his front tyre dipped into a hole on the northern side of the roadway.

Baron lost control of the bike and slammed into a nearby wall.

He died shortly after.

The police were notified and a team of officers led by W-Sgt Guerra responded.

All these measures to enforce vehicles are roadworthy but the road not worthy

govt come govt go, couva roads were always miserable.

cant blame the govt for this one, this is squarely on the councilors, mp, and if it has a mayor.

in my area, the councilor working to rehabilitate roads. it slowly goin on, but way better than any thing couva ever see. and i live in a lil pnm hotspot in south.

I could be wrong but I ain’t see no pothole in your this clip nah. What I did see was the biker going pretty fast from the limited view of this clip, and going around the corner straight. RIP nevertheless

If the pothole is that dark spot on the screen, it looks the bike missed it completely. Just lost control before the corner.

Problem is non red government areas are staved for tax payers funds while Tobago gets 2 Billion

Then we have red government minsters sending out threats to cut further funding from non red governments and take the proceeds to give to red areas where they don't deserve it .

Agreed.

Unless the dark spot is just the shadow being cast on one side of the pothole and it extends into where the rider passed? I'm not familiar with the area. RIP either way.

The irony is, couva main road from Isaac junction to Roops junction got paved, as in dugged out road to completely resurface the entire stretch twice in like 3 months. Mind you, the last time that stretch was paved according to some couvians was back when Carlos was transport minister. Somebody fact check that eh...

Now the hole by PQM is actually a trench they dug and patch back stupidly. Vehicles had to come to a complete stop to negotiate the damaged road carefully. This is on the east bound lane as the west bound lane was okayish....emphasis on ish.

Would have taken pics but for the 2nd night in a row, they painting white lines and blocked the entire road starting from FCB yesterday and now by Sophie’s today and put 0 signage for the motoring public. So like an impse I had to turn around.

Looks like the turning car was trying to miss the pot hole, and came very close to the biker.
And rider was going pretty fast, and probably didn't have enough time to maneuver away from the car in his lane.

That hole is definitely in play though.

Yes at that point there is a cut across the road which over time has developed into some potholes which requires drivers to slow down to 'safely' traverse.
This has been here for weeks now.
Recently there was a similar situation on the north bound lane of the Mc Bean stretch opposite MEDWAY and that and other potholes on the stretch were dealt with after a couple of well placed appeals.
The bottom line is the ministry of works are responsible for these situations and my understanding is that Couva and environs just not in the ranking.
The repaving of the main road in the heart of Couva was described as 'yuh lucky to get that'.

I remember some time ago when the female biker died in a crash there was an article discussing a phenomena where the biker at high speed cannot take the corner due to some sort of experience needed for maneuvering. I am not sure of the technical details but it summed up to not being able to take the corner and going straight on.

It looked like a similar event from the video.

it's such a shame that we settle for such crappy service from the authorities.
Imagine, a life had to be lost in order to get a pothole repaired. Thanks
Somebody ought to be held responsible.

Maybe if a minister had to wait 4 months for a certified copy, then when they got the copy it was incorrect, and they had to wait a further 3 months for a corrected copy, then they bounced up another vehicle with the same registration as theirs , maybe then they could finally push to computerize that damn office and it’s system.
