SuperStreet Race Day #2 held on the 4th and 5th June 2016

Driving School was held on Saturday 4th June from 10am to 1:30pm for new competitors and experienced drivers. Our instructors, a mix of top current and ex-circuit racing drivers, were Gordon Gonsalves, Jimmy Fifi, Kendal Chai, Steven Hosein and Brandon Steele. Sixteen student drivers took part in one-on-one 20-minute sessions with our instructors where they were taught the basics of performance driving.

The most outstanding padawan of the day was Adrian “Bake” Persad, who honed his entry-level driving skills in Autocross/Dexterity competition driving his Honda Civic hatchback. Two female drivers, Julie Ali and Seema Misrila also gave a good showing in their Subaru BR-Z and Mazda RX-8 cars. At 2pm the open practice session saw the return of Amir Hosein in his race-prepped Evo VI, but it was short-lived as he retired with engine issues.

A few Massy Motors sales representatives also had the opportunity to experience the Hyundai Veloster Turbo at pace under the guidance of our instructors, Steven and Brandon, with Kristian taking the opportunity assist and have an orientation run in preparation for a Sunday surprise. Joel Jagessar also graced the tracks with yet another well-prepared machine, a Nissan 350Z with an exhaust note from heaven. Its soundtrack was only matched by that of Steve Ghany Jr.’s Mercedes-Benz CLS350 AMG.

Sunday started promptly at 11am with 50 competitors taking to the track in Time Attack action. The first Run Group of SS1 and SS2 competitors saw some outstanding drives from Ross Viera, Anil Mack, Uttam Jogie, Trevy Hosein, Ryan Bahadoorsingh and Adrian Persad all scrambling for that ultimate elusive hot lap. First place went to Ross followed by Ryan Bahadoorsingh and 3rd Trevy. The SS3 class was larger than before with five big names pushing for numero uno! Sheldon Seepersadsingh returned to SS Intermediate Racing with some S13 SR20 domination followed by Dario Jordan and Nirvan Maharaj.

With over 24 competitors, the giant SS4 class had to be split into 4 run groups. The big names such as Alistair Rahamut, Kristian Boodoosingh , Marsden T Gordon, Aaron Achan, Kevon Ramjohn, Clive Sugden were all spread across the groups to give the fans the best possible show. Kristian Boodoosingh effectively employed clean lap strategies in Time Attack, taking first position, with Kevon Ramjohn and Alistair Rahamut hot on his bumper.

Kirk Ho Hing brought the Terrapin to SS in the Open Wheel Class. With a blistering run of 45.56, he was intent on competing for fastest time of the day. Now we just need 4 more open wheel cars to make a class for this machine… anyone have an Ariel Atom or Lotus 7 in their garage?

Enter the Bikes! With their blistering acceleration, knee-down cornering and shrieking, F1-style sounds, 9 bikes competed for Time Attack and Circuit Racing honours. Nicholas Gonzales was first in TA followed by Luke De Nobriega and Dion Phillip. In the circuit races, Luke De Nobriga took the top podium spot followed by Rossi Joseph and Nicholas Gonsalves.

The Circuit Class of SS saw seven entries in two races. Kristian Boodoosingh got off to an early start in Race 1 and led to the finish followed by Allistair and Ross. In Race 2 Allistair won, hounded by Kristian in second place and Trevy Hosein third. Overall Championship Circuit honours are as follows– Allistair Rahamut first, Kristian Boodoosingh second and Joel Jagessar third.

SuperStreet Race Day #2 would have finished early, despite the inclement weather, but entertaining the crowd is always our first option. Three exhibition races were held. An SS1 & SS2 combined TA Circuit Race with Anil Mack in first position, Kristian Boodoosingh won the SS3 & SS4 combined TA Circuit Race with a dead sprint together with Brandon Steele and Kevon Ramjohn to the finish line. Not to be outdone the Bikers asked the crowd’s permission for one more circuit race. It ended with Kiel Abraham in first position stamping his authority and letting his fellow competitors know “hey, don’t forget me”.

Also for the first time ever, the SuperStreet Factory Car Leaderboard saw its first entrant– T&T’s newest hot hatchback, the Hyundai Veloster Turbo. In the hands of our expert racing driver Kristian Boodoosingh a.k.a, “The BoodooSTIG”, the matte blue Veloster clicked off a 50.9-second best lap. For the details on Kristian’ run, read the full track review (coming soon).

SuperStreet Race Day #2 finished at 5:40pm despite intermittent showers we managed to pull off 20 races and saw almost 1000 spectators. It’s amazing how much the event has grown in just three installments.
