The Trinidad and Tobago Karting Association held their 5th event this weekend at the Wallerfield International Raceway. The event featured their three main classes Sportsman, Rotax International and Sportsman Masters. 31 Karts filled the Wallerfiled circuit with an encouraging sound that shows the tremendous growth in participants that the TTKA is experiencing.
With free practice wrapped up, the Sportsman class took to qualifying and championship leader Scott Wortman put his kart on pole position and would go on to secure a race win and two 2nd place finishes on the day, securing the overall win. Shane Sheppard continued on his quest to close the gap at the top of the table with two outstanding race wins and a 3rd place finish, thus reducing the gap to 3 points and finishing the day in 2nd position overall. Rossi Lochan continued his consistent performance with two 3rd place finishes and a 4th to secure the last podium position. Drives Liam Bartlet and Rylie Ramroop continued to impress as they battled with the front runners all day. 2016 championship contender Matthew Phillips also made a return to the class and showed promising speed for the races to come.
In the Rotax International class, veteran driver, Ryan Peyrau took pole position by a mere 0.037 seconds over Dillon Ali. Ryan continued to show why he is such a successful driver in anything with four wheels and took the overall win with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finish in the three heats. Returning to karting action young racing protegee Isa Deen took the second step of the podium missing out by just 1 point to Ryan. Isa secured two race wins and a 4th place finish on his return to karting action. Christopher Ramnauth rounded off the podium with 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finish in the three heats, this is Christopher’s fourth time on the podium this year and his consistency now has him as the joint championship leader with Justin Wortman.
In the Sportsman Masters class, Nicholas Gomes took the top step of the podium with two 2nd place finishes and a 4th place finish. Ronald Wortman continued his fine run of form securing the second step on the podium with 2 race wins. Michael Bernard took the final spot on the podium after securing pole position in qualifying and two 3rd place finishes and a 4th place finish on the day. Each event this masters class sees new participants added to the grid, making it an entertaining mix of experienced and new drivers jostling for positions.
The TTKA’s next event would be a Driving School and Family Fun Day on August 11th at the Wallerfield International Raceway. So pack up your coolers, gather the family and come on down and experience the thrill of karting yourself. The TTKA will have 5 Junior karts available for patrons to rent and drive on the day so look out for more details on their social media platforms.
