Which one for a lady, Kia Sorento, Navara or Hi Lux?

Postby Powerlady » September 17th, 2012, 2:29 pm

Hello All
Ok, so I need to get a new vehicle by the beginning of next year. It has to be something that can do long hauls without burning a hole in my pocket (initial cost, gas and maintenance), yet still have comfort and some style. I have been looking at the Kia Sorento, the Navara and the HiLux as possible contenders (I really really LOVE the new Ford, but I think it might be just too big to move around in every day, am I wrong).
You guys seem to be experts, which would be best for a lady who drives between Port of Spain, San Fernando and Sangre Grande several times a week.

I must say, it was funny but your immaturity was uncalled for at this moment. to kill to birds with one stone, I would say an RV.

That way you can be in the kitchen while making those long trips

On a serious note though, I would go with the hilux. Basically, you can't go wrong with a Toyota. Reliablity and service to the max. (IB navara banton)

To make a proper decision there are a few things to consider. When you say haul, do you mean you will be transporting stuff? Also, what price range are you looking at as these three slightly vary in price from each other? etc

budget-wise, a diesel SUV would be a decent option, and easier to park than a pickup, and Kia seems to have a decent build quality level now.........my personal choice though, would be to go for the RAV4............toyota reliability and resale value, plus a bucketload of airbags
People seem to like the sorento but I personally find thehandling vague and wallowy....it makes me queasy to be in something so high and floaty...

Honda Crv ? Good enough resale value , well not good for hauling but quite responsive whenit comes to power and handling , Ravs are prety decent as well but i think the sportero suits a woman style , curvish

Unless you have complete use for a tray i would say avoid the pickups.
The new Sorento is great lots of space . Get over 800kms to the tank.... Very reliable imo

iz et phat???

that said,

toyota FTW.
however as a woman i would prefer a smooth ride, although the hilux gives the best ride out of all the pickups it still is a bit rough compared to say an suv or car.
as stated above, if you don't have much need for a tray then get a suv.

suv and pickups are cool and all that but did you consider the diesel accent?

Why are you all recommending vehicles with gasoline powered engines for? The lady will be doing probably around 800km per week based on the locations given.

A diesel powered engine, in an SUV or a Hyundai Accent, would be my recommendations. As someone said before, unless you intend to use the tray to its fullest capacity, an SUV may be the better choice. Although you could install a body coloured camper shell over the tray on a Hilux or Navara without it looking too ugly.

I know it's not one of your options but why not consider the Tucson?

Ok, to the person who still needs mum's milk... I can cook...but I am also quite a precision driver :P

I don't actually haul anything, it was just an expression for the 'long hauls (drives)' that I take.

As for price point, I really didn't want to go over 300,000TTD, but if the Sorento will give me what I need for the next 7-10 years then I would invest in it. The Rav4 is nice, but I think that it might be overpriced. Humm, Toyota has a sale on now....

Thanks for your help guys.

Should I mention that 'I DON'T SEE CARS'. Sorry guys, but I am NOT a car person. They are just too small or too low. I need room and good vantage points (height) when I'm stuck in traffic on the road.
I looked at the Tucson and the Sportage, they are last resorts if I cannot get what I need in the time that I need it. I would get them before the Rav4 though.

I agree the RAV4 is overpriced, but then so is everything else............my pick for 'chunky high vehicle' is the MINI Countrtyman :)
I personally don't like SUVs........they feel too unstable....and well pickups.........I have a company BT50 which makes me uneasy...too damn high..........I like being able to pelt my car into a corner and not wonder if t will roll........same for sudden lane changes on the highway..........granted when I next to a Prado in traffic while I in my MGF, my roof is lower than his door O_O

Well, if I was trying for speed I could see what you're saying. I think I can get some 'precision' from an SUV. They do feel pretty high and thus sometimes wobbly, but they are actually enough stable for me. I've seen a friend tear round corners and pavement park with a Prado...my tongue was in my belly, but we were fine...lol.

I have been tossing about the diesel, it may be economical on fuel, but I heard that maintenance can be a killer???

I think once you stick to scheduled maintenance with a diesel, you shouldn't be incurring any hight costs............regular oil and filter changes etc
The problem with diesel is that in trinidad, our diesel is high in sulfur, so more frequent oil changes are recommended, since the acid that builds up from diesel sulfur will lead to long term issues.......
re stability, it's quick left-right-left swerves that cause the most problems.......if your friend had to do a course correction mid-corner, it could have been a different scenario.......higher centre of gravity is what I don't like

Seeing as it's for a lady, safety in respect of theft/carjacking should also be a key point.

Although it's safe to say that no vehicle is unattractive to a car thief, the Japanese brands have a history of being more "attractive" to thieves, especially pickups of recent. A Korean brand SUV (the Sorento or Santa Fe) would definitely be less of a target than a Navarra or Hilux.

Note this isn't a justification of one over the other, or one being better than the next - just something to keep in mind when making your decision.

Thank you, safety did occur to me when I though of getting an open tray vehicle...at least the thought that anyone could jump into the back of it...if I didn't put in some form of tray cover.

I also like the thought of being able to get into the 'trunk' without having to exit the vehicle.

Well I know that my mechanic would keep a dedicated log, maybe I will go diesel...and definitely SUV, sorry, but my almost 6ft frame, needs room.

lol well yeah you'd be a bit of a squeeze in my lil convertible...........but the MINI Countryman is surprisingly roomy up front, and it comes in all wheel drive and turbo options too (too damn expensive imo tho).........dunno why they don't offer the diesel MINI option here either

u're gonna have to service every 5K with any diesel vehicle u buy or else they're gonna "void ur warranty". With my hilux a 5k service will run between $1000 - $1500. luckily i don't drive it as much (18000 Km in 2 yrs)..... de sorento is nice but u dealing with ssl......... unpleasant experiences with them and my mazda 3.

to be quite honest if i was in de markerket for a vehicle right now i would consider the rav 4..... overpriced yes, but my experience with toyota so far has been great. even though you will be racking up mileage and hence filling up more gas, ur service bill might be less if they allow for 10,000K service intervals.

or u cud buy a hilux, say "fack de firm" and den jus service on the outside.... best of both worlds.

yup, did that with mines.
bought mines in 2010 and took it to them for the 1000km check up.
after that i serviced for my self at home using only original filters (they not that expensive) and oil.
i even change the fuel filter at 2500km instead of the usual 5000km interval

however i did tell Nigel (the sale rep) that i'm not gonna accept their bullsh!t about void warranty and i not signing anything as i will be using original parts and if they have a problem then tell Toyota.
Manager came and spoke to me, at the end of it i got a special contract.

however going in three years........no problems so warranty my arse after all........i never had to use it
