Substitute parts

Postby VA777 » March 29th, 2017, 5:36 pm

Hey guys i need some advise here, i have a hilux for the past 9 1/2 years and i have been using original parts since i got the van from toyota. However in the recent past i have some friends who have similar vehicles and they mentioned that they use substitute parts like oil filter and fuel filters on their vehicle, and it works fine plus it cost a lot less. Guys tell me what are your thoughts on this??

I think it depends on the part you are replacing, quality of replacement and cost. On my local NZE121 I use a FRAM oil filter, generic cabin filter. However, when I was replacing the fuel filter, my mechanic suggested I used the original from Toyota.

Look at it this way. 9-and-a-half years is pretty old.
The cost of the original Toyota parts may be more than what the van is now worth. LOL !!!

You know, when my Fielder wagon was nearing ten years old doing about 100,000 kms the back bearing assemblies started to make noise. The original at Toyota was $2,830 for one. I opted to use aftermarket for $300 for one. That was four or more years ago. It took about ten minutes to remove, and ten to replace each one. They are still going OK, no problems.
At that price, I could buy one every six months and change it.
I had a Sentra B14 bought new from Neal and Massy, After two-and-a-half years the boots over the velocity joints had to be renewed. I bought aftermarket boots for $30 each. I sold the car when it was ten years old with the same replacement boots and no crackle of the velocity joints.
Pick sense from nonsense.
Peace.
RR.

For me...depends on the part, what is available and the cost should that part fail. I say this because there are quality aftermarket parts and cheap aftermarket parts.

Items I look for original...
Diesel fuel filter, engine seals that are located on rotating components (like camshaft seal and crank seal), light housings and Brake shoes.

Aftermarket is almost everything else but you have to draw the line when it comes to quality at some point and expect to change them a little more often...
Purolator/Valvoline oil filters
Bosch/mintex/Wagner brake pads (Bosch pads last about 1/2 the time of the original but costs 1/4 of the original)
Sakura air filters (which is probably the only sakura filter I trust)
Gates/bando drive belts
Auto Transmission fluid (cause Mobil 1 is the aftermarket option and it costs less)
Pylon wipers
Ball joints, Knuckle joints, tie rods
Sway bar links (555 usually has me covered)
