The first effective coronavirus vaccine can prevent more than 90% of people from getting Covid-19, a preliminary analysis shows.
The developers - Pfizer and BioNTech - described it as a "great day for science and humanity".
Their vaccine has been tested on 43,500 people in six countries and no safety concerns have been raised.
The companies plan to apply for emergency approval to use the vaccine by the end of the month.
There are still huge challenges ahead, but the announcement has been warmly welcomed with scientists describing themselves smiling "ear to ear" and some suggesting life could be back to normal by spring.
"I am probably the first guy to say that, but I will say that with some confidence," said Sir John Bell, regius professor of medicine at Oxford University.
A vaccine - alongside better treatments - is seen as the best way of getting out of the restrictions that have been imposed on all our lives.
There are around a dozen in the final stages of testing - known as a phase 3 trial - but this is the first to show any results.
It uses a completely experimental approach - that involves injecting part of the virus's genetic code - in order to train the immune system.

But I don't see how they will track you down (in Trinidad) unless instead of stopping people for mask, drivers permit, insurance, they asking for immunization card.

Once proven safe, I don't see a reason not to take it. Conspiracy theorist idiots like yourself don't understand the stringent testing measures and research required to make vaccines. Would it be 100% safe, quite possibly yes, but even if it's 99.99% safe then for the greater good we all need to take this.
As an someone who has studied infectious diseases, you want to stop this in its tracks and stop the potential for it mutating into something vaccine resistant (so far the type of strain mutations occuring won't affect the efficacy of the vaccine, but that's now).
If people continue to spread misinformation about vaccines and adopt a mindset where fear of the vaccine is grater than fear of Covid-19, then there'll always be a Covid-19 risk and an even greater risk of a real killer Covid-19.
Not saying these current strains aren't deadly, they are but only to those we label high risk. But imagine something half as bad MERs but just as infectious as Covid-19. You'll be looking at almost apocalyptic scenarios.
And lastly, why remain at risk for Covid and spreading it around? You might not get it bad, but what if your parents, grandparents, older co-workers get it and die? How can people be so selfish and disregarding the health and lives of others.
I think vaccine education needs to be mandatory or if not, make the vaccine mandatory.
redmanjp wrote:^ was now going to post that. d next 1 go say their own 99% effective. so both ready to apply for approval?
also pfizer's vaccine is supposed to get EUA approval to start vaccination next month. so when would T&T be able to get it?

The reason why there is a lockdown and rush to get a vaccine for Covid is because it is far far more contagious than HIV and spreads faster to more people than cancer or diabetes in the same time frame.
Covid is the disease you get from the SARS CoV 2 virus which scientists already had research on treatments for the original SARS and other respiratory syndromes.
A highly contagious virus that spread to 55 million people in 191 counties in less than a year. And those numbers are only so low because of the global lockdown.
Plus Covid caused a major drop in the global economy, massive industries like airlines, cruises, movies, entertainment etc etc tanked. That is incentive for pharmaceutical companies to race to getting a cure.

But until these results and claims are verified by third parties I will try to contain my excitement.
These are two reputable companies and personally I dont really trust the other companies developing vaccines. Particularly Sputnik 5 (Russia) and Sinovac (Chinese company) - They messed up some Brazilian's with "a mild adverse event".
I am hoping either Pfizer or Moderna efforts are used in the UK challenge trials which they are planning then we can see true effectiveness and not a sales pitch from these companies.
Hopefully things go well and no one gets to screwed up by either of these products and I will get mine before the middle of next year.

Speaking about the Russian results, she said: "Whilst encouraging, I worry that these data have been rushed out on the back of the Pfizer/BioNtech announcement earlier in the week. "This is not a competition. We need all trials to be carried out to the highest possible standards, and it is particularly important that the pre-set criteria for unblinding the trial data are adhered to avoid cherry-picking the data. Anything less than this risks a public loss of trust in all vaccines, which would be a disaster." Interim analyses of vaccine trials are often carried out in case the jabs prove to be dangerous or ineffective. But one former director at pharmaceutical giant GSK told The Telegraph he was "utterly appalled" that Pfizer had released the clinical trial data before peer-review. "Really it's just a cynical and egregious marketing ploy by Pfizer to get early orders, with money up front, because they know that mass vaccination with a vaccine that needs storage at -80 degrees is completely unworkable," he said. "It's just a dreadful example of big pharma trying to get its share price up and profits into its organisation before the Pfizer vaccine is declared totally impractical for widespread use in society. "As soon as other vaccines are available, then this Pfizer vaccine will not be widely used. Hence their announcement to get in early." Many experts now believe the Pfizer vaccine will never be suitable for mass immunisation because of the cost and cold-chain storage required. Even delivery companies that specialise in that area have been left scratching their heads about how to make it work. Philip Ashton, the CEO and co-founder of AI logistics company 7bridges, said: "Moving and storing dry ice shipments is much more complex, and requires more expertise and infrastructure, than the two to eight degrees Celsius cold chain. "Far fewer sites that may be able to administer a vaccine will currently have storage facilities for dry ice or easy access to supplies of dry ice if they have to store the vaccine for any length of time. There are ways around this, such as just-in-time fulfilment of the vaccine, but this creates different challenges, principally that any disruptions to transport schedules can leave distribution sites without vaccine stock. "Because of the additional complexity associated with the dry ice dependent vaccines, all other things being equal, a vaccine that can be kept at two to eight degrees Celsius will be much simpler to distribute and store and therefore administer to a population."

Be careful who you believe in this race to produce a vaccine with no side effects and full immunity
