The founder of the Drug Sou Sou or DSS, Kerron Clarke is now in hospital after being detained by the police over the weekend.

He is hospitalized at the Mt Hope Accident and Emergency Adult Hospital where it is said that he suffered soft tissue damage to his upper body.

According to reports, police took Mr. Clarke to his home and attempted to open the door to his house. He resisted, demanding that his lawyers be present.

Mr. Clarke's lawyers eventually arrived on the scene and claim that they observed that he had been manhandled.

Police are now seeking advice from the DPP on possible charges.

MEDIA RELEASE

DSS founder charged with money laundering

Kerron Clarke, founder of the Drugs Sou Sou (DSS), was charged today with two counts of money laundering contrary to section 45(1)(b) of the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The decision to lay the charges followed advice received today from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard SC.

Clarke, a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, will appear before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate tomorrow morning.

Clarke was arrested last Saturday after police executed a search warrant at his home in La Horquetta.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mc Donald Jacob, said investigations are continuing into the seizure of $7.7 million in cash in La Horquetta several months ago.

Wow,

Im guessing that means he will have to shut down DSS permanently and refund everyone their money?

I’m sure the interest of the people has always been his #1 priority.

Great is the DSS

WHO IS TELLING THE TRUTH?

WDF. This is what all the fuss was about?

Police charge DSS boss under Proceeds of Crime Act

FOUNDER of Drugs Sou Sou (DSS) Kerron Clarke was charged on Tuesday afternoon with receiving a television and operating a money-lending business without a licence.

Clarke was granted $300,000 bail by a Justice of the Peace to cover the charges and will appear virtually in court on Thursday. According to the charges, under the Proceeds of Crime Act, Clarke received a television on a date unknown between May 3, 2019 and February 8, 2021, as collateral for a loan the recipient was unable to repay.

He was also charged with receiving $1,850 on a date unknown, between February 9, 2019 and December 3, 2020, as interest received on a loan, while running a moneylender's business without a licence.

The charges came hours after Clarke’s attorneys filed a writ of habeas corpus which sought to compel the State to release or charge him after he was arrested on Saturday.

Clarke has also filed personal charges against police officers alleging that they assaulted him.

On Sunday, Lasana Murray, one of Clarke’s three attorneys, dismissed reports that his client had had a heart attack. On Tuesday, Murray said his client neededspecialist treatment from a cardiologist, as a result of an alleged assault,

After he was arrested last Saturday, Clarke – a member of the Defence Force – complained of chest and arm pains. He was discharged from the Arima Health Facility around 10.30 am on Sunday, after being admitted on Saturday night. Clarke was reportedly injured during a police search at his home. Murray said on Sunday, his client suffered bruises and soft-tissue damage to the upper part of his body.

Officers assigned to the Financial Intelligence Bureau raided Clarke’s Kathleen Warner Drive, La Horquetta home and DSS office on Saturday. That was the fifth time police had searched Clarke’s home since DSS came under a police probe last year.

Last September, police raided and seized close to $22 million, which was later returned. They later applied to the courts and were given permission to seize $7.7 million in three additional raids.

Last October, Clarke put his operations on hold indefinitely after the court order, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

Magistrate orders police: Return cash to hairdresser

Image
Attorney Lasana Murray and his client Cindy Brooks, outside his Guanapo Street, Arima office shortly after the magistrate's order.

AN Arima magistrate on Wednesday ordered police to return $64,935 toa 44-year-old hairdresser which represented funds from a Drug Sou Sou (DSS) hand.

Magistrate Brambhanan Dubay denied police an extension to keep the money, which they seized in February, and ordered it be returned to the owner, Cindy Brooks.

Dubay refused the extension since the police officer who sought the extension failed to show up in court to justify the need for the police to hold on to the money a little longer.

Brooks' attorney, Lasana Murray said the magistrate ordered all the money returned, including whatever interest that may have accrued.

According to the case history, Brooks's Malabar home was searched on February 21 for arms and ammunition. None were found, but police seized the money.

Brooks said $40,000 out of the money was from her "hand" from DSS and the rest was savings. The $40,000, she said, was for someone else who had pooled their resources with her to get a bigger payout.

The police, who were represented by Cpl Mings of the Financial Intelligence Bureau, first applied to have the money seized on February 22 and then on May 20. The case was adjourned four times, ending on Wednesday with Dubay’s decision. Police claimed the money seized was the proceeds of a crime not committed by Brooks.

Last November, investors in DSS were told to go to the court to get back their investments after police seized $7.7 million from the home of the founder of DSS, Kerron Clarke, at Kathleen Warner Drive, Phase One La Horquetta. So far none of the applications have been successful.

Sure.

If the lawyer is half as bright as his suit he would file a harrassment claim of some sort.

TTPS can not be allowed to bring charges against citizens without accountability.

I know he's not in court or anything but at least he coulda rock some funky Argyle's, especially when you know there will be comments and justified or not, your sartorial preference will be linked to your ability as a lawyer.

Be that as it may, it makes him look more like an IML conman and less like someone who practices law.
