Blinken says NATO countries have "green light" to send fighter jets to Ukraine

Washington — Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday that NATO members have the go-ahead to send fighter jets to Ukraine as the U.S. and allies continue their efforts to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's invasion.

"That gets a green-light," Blinken said in an interview with "Face the Nation" when asked whether the Polish government, a member of NATO, could send fighter planes to Ukraine. "In fact, we're talking with our Polish friends right now about what we might be able to do to backfill their needs if in fact they choose to provide these fighter jets to the Ukrainians. What can we do? How can we help to make sure that they get something to backfill the planes that they are handing over to the Ukrainians?"

A White House spokesperson told CBS News the Biden administration is working on the capabilities it could provide to backfill Poland if it decided to transfer planes to Ukraine but noted there are several questions that arise from a decision to do so, including how the jets could be transferred from Poland to Ukraine.

The International Monetary Fund has said it expects to bring Ukraine’s request for $1.4 billion in emergency financing to its board for approval as early as next week as it warned the war will have a “severe impact” on the global economy.

The IMF also said it was in talks about funding options with authorities in neighbouring Moldova, reports Reuters.

The global lender said in a statement that the war in Ukraine was already driving up energy and grain prices amid a growing refugee crisis and unprecedented sanctions on Russia.

“While the situation remains highly fluid and the outlook is subject to extraordinary uncertainty, the economic consequences are already very serious,” the IMF said in a statement.

“The ongoing war and associated sanctions will also have a severe impact on the global economy,” it said, warning that the crisis was impacting inflation and economic activity when pressures were already high.

It said price shocks would be felt across the world and that authorities should provide financial support for poor households and that economic damage would increase if the war continued to escalate.

Protests across Russia see thousands detained

More than 4,300 people were detained at anti-war protests across Russia on Sunday, rights groups and Russian authorities say.

Some 1,700 people were detained in Moscow alone, Ria news agency reports, citing the interior ministry.

The OVD-Info rights group says detentions took place in 53 cities.

Although protests have become increasingly restricted in recent years, numerous rallies have taken place across Russia since the invasion.
