Businessman’s family beaten during Central home invasion

A Felicity businessman and his family were beaten and robbed yesterday morning.

Moonieram Gangaram, 53, the owner of EHS Hardware, of Cacandee Road, was asleep at 3.15 am when four masked men broke into his home, which is located upstairs the hardware, and started demanding money.

Police said the men entered the home through a window on the southern side of the house. They accosted Gangaram and beat him about his head and body, asking for his safe and cash. They also beat his wife, 43, and sister-in-law, 42. Both women had to be taken to the hospital for injuries sustained during the attack.

The bandits also terrorised his boys, aged 12 and 7.

An undisclosed amount of cash, jewellery and electronic items were stolen by the bandits before they escaped.

Felicity/Endeavour councillor Sundar Jookoo, who is also spokesman for the Felicity Community Patrol, said the attack occurred after they ended their community patrols in the area around 3 am.

“I was at the home of the family around 3.25 am. They came in fast and furious and committed their crime in the shortest possible time. They are traumatised after being beaten with gun butts about their face and body,” Jookoo said.

Noting a promise by Government, he called for more municipal police in the community.

“The Government has promised more municipal police, around 100 more officers and nothing has happened. An increased Municipal Police force would allow us to do more patrols in the area. I am also appealing to residents to ensure that their homes are safe and there are no loopholes for criminals to enter their homes, such as accessible vents in washrooms and windows near staircases. The criminal mind is always looking for a way to get to you and your family.”

This is to show police will come after the fact you ded in a home invasion. It took only 8 minutes to drive but the police come after 2 hrs?

It took almost two hours for police to respond when farmer Aquie Persad was attacked on Sunday by three criminals during a home invasion.
By the time the officers arrived at Persad’s home in Welcome Road North, Cunupia, the 58-year-old farmer was already dead.
A relative disclosed that calls to the police were made when the criminals were first noticed on the premises. However, there was no response.
It would take the police “nearly an hour and half going to two hours” to finally arrive on scene of the crime, the relative said.
One taxi driver who traverses the route said there was no explanation for the police taking longer than 20 minutes to arrive on the scene of the crime.
Express journalist Shivana Lal checked that information, driving from the police station to the house where Persad died.This is what Shivana discovered.

well they lucky it work this time- another time if they were more daring bandits with gun that action would have resulted in shots being fired and somebody dead!

i don’t think home invasions/burglaries are stringently
counted statistically like murders (or homicides as some insist)
so the numbers definitely more
also unlike murders where a large proportion are amongst that crowd/pest type
home invasion victims are usually of the normal law abiding persons
so the net trauma and losses incurred are much more than a murder
it could also be argued that these home invasions are very well planned,
ie like a premeditated higher level murder

so i would think heinz et al prefer that the stats not be stringently kept
