What amp to power 8 ohm drivers?!?!

Postby Aaron___ » January 12th, 2025, 2:38 pm

So currently I looking to put 2 8 ohm PA drivers in my front doors. What amp would be able to give enough power, say 200 watts when being read 8 ohms since wiring to parallel is not applicable? Side note: I still want to hook up two tweeters within the amp and control them within the DSP individually as well, bridging may not be applicable either.

PA drivers usually have very high sensitivity. Power isn't the main consideration since a little power can get these speakers very loud. Check the db per watt and at each double of power add 3db. That will tell you how much watts you need for the loudness you will get.

example if its rated at 96db at 1W

2W - 99db
4W - 102db
8W - 105db
16W- 108db
36W- 111db
72W- 114db
144W-117db
288W-120db

Most car amps are rated 4 ohm so you would have to look at the specs and divide the 4 ohm rated power by 2 to determine the power into 8 ohm.

An amp that's rated 300W x 2 @4 Ohms should be able to provide 150W to each speaker and produce levels at 117dB. That's pretty loud

How is wiring to 4 ohm not applicable?
Unless u wanna maintain stereo sound?
But it is simple
Get a 4 channel amp...600x4 and up
Bridge the amp to use two channels and one driver unit per channel

If that amp is a two channel
At 4 ohm stereo it will only give around 75wrms
And typical two channel amp rating will be
75x2@4ohm
150x2@2ohm
300x1 @ 4ohm

If the amp is rated 300W x 2 @ 4Ohm stereo then that's what he needs. He could also use a 4 channel that can bridge into the same power but he wants to independently power tweeters and control them via the DSP, so the 4 channels would be needed.

I hope I'm not too late, but you'll need a 2-channel amp that delivers around 200W RMS at 8 ohms per channel. Look for models from brands like Sundown, Hertz, or JL Audio. Make sure the amp has DSP integration to manage tweeter control separately.

For two 8-ohm PA drivers, you're looking for an amp that can handle 200 watts per speaker at 8 ohms. A good match would be an amp with at least 400 watts RMS at 8 ohms, so something like a 2-channel amp rated for 200 watts per channel at 8 ohms would do the trick. If you're adding tweeters and want individual control, make sure the amp has a DSP with enough channels or run separate crossovers for the tweeters. Bridging might not be necessary, but make sure the amp can handle your setup without overloading.
