Deadly long-standing extortion feud: Coconut vendors gunned down in Cunupia double murder — Days after home was shot up
Targeted and taken out: Coconut vendors slain weeks after escaping first attack —several other family members were murdered over extortion
Anthony John, one of the victims in a double murder at the corner of River Road and Mon Plaisir Road in Cunupia on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, was targeted by gunmen just weeks earlier.
On April 4th, around 8:35 p.m., John was seated in the galley of his home with a female relative when two men emerged from a silver Nissan Tiida and opened fire. The victims managed to flee inside and escaped unhurt.
But in a calculated ambush earlier today, John was shot dead along with his relative, Vicky Joseph, just moments after leaving his River Road home.
The duo were reportedly heading out to sell coconuts when their vehicle was cornered at the intersection by another car.
Gunmen from a blocking vehicle unleashed a hail of bullets on John’s pickup van. Both he and Joseph died at the scene. A third man was wounded and taken to hospital.
CCTV footage captured the chilling moment their vehicle was boxed in and attacked. A silver AD wagon was seen trailing the vehicle before the ambush.
This isn’t the first time violence has struck the family. On April 26th, 2023, another relative, Dillon Joseph, was gunned down while selling watermelon near the Caroni Roundabout.
Other relatives have also fallen victim to gun violence in St. Augustine and surrounding areas, allegedly at the hands of a gang involved in extortion.
