Changing Brakes part2

Postby 3stagevtec » February 22nd, 2007, 1:48 pm

need some help.

i did the change already but the right bar is bent and they are unable to properly align the car. now i will have to replace everything back to stock.

while looking for another set of rear disc brakes, some people was saying that i can keep the stock bar the drums came on, and just swap the drums for the discs... can this really be done? my mechanic was saying that it cannot but i heard from two other sources that it could.

(btw, the 'bar' i am refering to is the main arm the brakes are attached to, i just dont know the proper name for it)

Rear trail arm

the new one from a EK3 or EK4

for swapping u have to look for the part where the caliper bolts see if it can come out
and remount to the arm with the drum

Note u have to scrap the drum out

the arm with the drum and one with the disk

^^ don't make me show you a arm I have off a 5 lug ctr that is BENT!!!

I believe its 4 torque bolts at the back of the arm holding the drum onto it, take off the drum, then do the same to the disc. Replace the drum brake with the disc on the drums arm walla good to go! (note there might be issues if you have a rear sway bar.)

Never seen anyone swap the drum arm with a disc.... looking at the mounting point on the disc... it doesn't look possible, but I dunno what the drum one is looking like. I likely won't fit just thinking about it as the mount point for the hand-brake cable for a read disc needs to pass thru the arm itself... I think at a different point than for drum.

I'm looking for a left rear arm myself... holla.

Just for your information guys, I believe the 92-00 Civic and 94-01 Integra all carry the same rear trailing arm whether it be Drum or Disc.
And yes as DM16 said; there are 4 torx bolts behind the arms that hold the drum or disc assembly to the arm. Most likely those bolts be well rusted and will need to be well saturated in WD40 to get loose. You will also need a torx wrench (which most people do not have at that size).

X2, don't waste ur time looking for the arm, just buy a torx wrench and swap.

3stagevtec, try it and let us know.

Brake upgrade

Postby dizzEK3h » February 23rd, 2007, 9:11 am

all 90-00 Civic rear trailing arms are the same your mechanic is b/sing you.
what you have to do is remove the four torx bolts(T50) i belive. they are a
beyotch to remove, you may have to heat them a lil bit, with a torch,be careful,
you dont want damage anything. once you have them off,jus remove the
bolt on the spindle and you can take the drum off.replacement with the
disc components is the reversal. good luck. :D follow the diagrams as shown
great help Cleriq 8-)

when compairing the two arms, they look the same. after looking at it, my mech says it will sway over.

BUT

those four bolts is a reeeel pain in de arse to remove!!!!! my mech broke TWO of the drivers they were using to take it out! they started to bend the third one also so they gave up and sent it to a machine shop to get them out...

i have to go back by them today to see if they were sucessfull. will take pics of the procedure

The brakes are on and working great. The rear trailing arm that holds the drum brakes and the rear trailing arm that holds the disc brakes on the EK3 and EK4 Civics are the same. So it was a simple remove and replace procedure.

The heads of the four screws that was holding the drum brake on had to be drilled out! When they got out the drum brake, they simply attached the disc / caliper to the trail arm and placed it back onto the car.

Rear Disc review:
I'm still using the original brake booster, master cylinder and porportioning valve. A difference in braking power was felt with the rear disc brakes vs the old drums. I didn't do any hard braking as yet, because i'm still breaking in the car and the new pads but i already feel an extra 'pull' coming from behind when braking.

I'll upgrade the booster, MC and PV in two or three weeks and will give a review on that...

Thanks all

Have you found them yet? ANP hit me an evil price for the MC.

have them booked already, is just to go collect the parts... i would like to see how the brakes will work with the stock MC, PV and booster. curious to see if there is any possibility that the rear will lockup.. as i've heard it might happen..

That's the extra ''pull'' from the rear.... the drum prop valve is putting more pressure to the back lines.

My wallet is mucho relieved that the arms are swappable !
