In that case I posted my custom 3.1 firmware that can be used on Windows iTunes to update to 3.1 & maintain unlock/jailbreak. Only would work with iPhone (2G) though. Link

going to try this now ... :!: :!: hope it works

guys... i need help..

okay i got 3.1 loaded, and restored my Free apps. I installed aptbackup and was going to restore my cydia apps and when it restarted, the phone doesnt want to come on at all. It is stuck at the Apple's logo and doesnt want to load further. It shows the loading circle after about 2min and then it reboots and goes again.

Did i brick the iPhone?

It is not being picked up by iTunes or any program and yes i tried holding Home and Power and restarting to no avail... :(

like we're the only 2G owners left :(

I noticed less heat initially and much better battery life.

Now the heat is back, but less and battery life is remaining once its asleep. Like how it should be. :)

One of the problems reported by users who have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1 has been poor battery life.

According to folks at TheiPhoneBlog, Apple is contacting users who are reporting the problem and asking them for more information. They're also sending these users an unsigned profile to enable battery life logging on the iPhone to troubleshoot the problem.

TheiPhoneBlog reports that many users who had reported issues regarding poor battery life are being contacted by AppleCare helpdesk with a list of 11 follow-up questions. The questions apparently focus on the usual suspects such as email (using Push), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and iPhone apps that are frequently used.

The interesting bit is that they have also sent these users an unsigned profile as an attachment, which enables battery life logging on the iPhone.

Once enabled, the iPhone will sync power logs back via iTunes, and they ask that those logs be sent back to Apple. (Due to the size of the logs, they recommend users not go for a few days without syncing, and provide instructions on turning off Battery Life Logging once the information has been accumulated.

When we had reported about the iPhone OS 3.1 problems, some of our readers had complained that they were also facing those issues and in some cases readers had reported that poor battery life was the only problem they were facing.

So it’s good to know that Apple is actively investigating the battery life problem. It also makes sense to troubleshoot the problem on a case by case basis as battery life also depends on how users use their iPhone.

Geoff Teehan from Teehan+Lax has posted his vision for the iPhone Home Screen. Unfortunately, Apple has prevented any changes to the home screen via the SDK; however, its possible that someone could create an implementation of this for users with jailbroken devices.

You can see from the screens it’s essentially just a scrollable list of applications and notifications. We envision it behaving in much the same way that the list view does in the Calendar application. By default it may track things like missed calls, unread emails and calendar events. But what if users could allow other apps to feed into this screen as well? If I’m a Facebook junkie I’d be able to tell the Facebook app to include certain feeds on my home screen. If I was a frequent traveler I may include the Tripit app to show me my upcoming trips. The options would only be limited by what apps you have installed.

Basically the design allows you to create a scrollable home screen of the stuff that matters to you.

I don't see why not, though I do remember reading about not being able to downgrade to 3.0. Not sure if that extended to iPod touches as well.

Apple's redesign of its low cost polycarbonate MacBook line is now believed to be closer than once thought, according to AppleInsider.

The new models, which appear as if they could make their debut alongside a family of more versatile iMacs in the coming weeks, are expected to arrive as the most affordable notebook offerings in the Mac maker's history.

Little is known about the new notebooks; however, a thinner, sleeker enclosure that uses Apple's internal battery technology is expected.

One person familiar with pre-production units indicated to AppleInsider that models awaiting certification were seen in white polycarbonate shells. Reports have also surfaced which suggest that the models have been sent to manufacturing.

AppleInsider expects the new iMacs to debut within one to three weeks. Hopefully, the new MacBooks will be released alongside them.

This guide should help.

NB It uses iTunes 7.5 but should still work in iTunes 9.0.1. Just note that the features it mentions to use have been rearranged but are still available.

Mind if i make a mini tutorial?

1) Get your song, and drag it into iTunes. (Just like as u see in that tutorial:

Image

2) Do as they say, right click, hit get info and edit where in the song u want it.

Image

3) Go under advanced>convert selection to AAC.

Image

4) Drag it to the Desktop and rename the File Extension from *.m4a to *.m4r

It will look like this:
Image

5) here is the catch. If your like me, and u manage your music/videos manually, syncing ringtones will in turn delete your stuff on your phone.

So what i did was:

    i) load up iPhoneBrowser.
ii) navigate to Library > Ringtones
iii) Drag and drop the *.m4r file into that location and exit.

Image

That saved me from having to sync with iTunes and lose any music and here is the ringtone:
