importing computer parts or entire pc

I'm considering purchasing computer parts to build a new pc, but afraid I'll get burned by VAT and customs. I'll be purchasing a tower together with internal components, mouse, keyboard and monitor.
Do you pay vat, customs when purchasing a complete system in parts?
Do you have to pay taxes on complete computers, say from dell?

If I'm going to be taxed, I'll consider purchasing from dell.

have parts reasonable. If you want hing end parts from tiger direct or amazon is plenty to ship and customs and thing. Build your own computer like me. Dell is good. If you want the best consider a mac. Great for music, photos and stuff

Entire computer: - no VAT, no duty

The individual components - VAT and/or duty depending on the parts (mostly just VAT only). CPU, RAM, motherboard, PSU and video card are the parts that usually get VAT from my first hand experience, but you get lucky sometimes: it's subject to the whim and knowledge of the particular Customs officer who happens to examine your stuff.

try and bring in the lighter stuff from away and buy the heavier stuff locally.

as saxman642 said, it depends on the custom officer and his/her knowledge. when i brought in stuff only my psu got taxed. my mobo, videocard, cpu, ram came in tax free, only paid freight.

i bought monitor locally by supertechtt since they had good prices and would have been taxed. bought the case locally also.

Bring essential parts in motherboard, processor video card,ram. Buy the case, monitor, power supply keyboard mouse locally.

You come out better this way and get a high end machine cheapish.

Tigerdirect has some good prices.

I bought all my parts excluding monitor locally and did not spend a fortune, besides, when something goes wrong local warranty covers. The only reason I bought the monitor away was bcuz it was at a great price and I was able to put in my carry on

I got a decent spec motherboard from fiz for a price almost half what other stores selling it for and got a 1 year warranty

ST sells low grade stuff, the MB i bought from them didnt last a good year and the front audio ports were dead out the box on the tower I bought

yup....if is a pre built tower like dell sony hp no duty etc...

if is components it depends on the component and the knowledge of ye old custom officer

check fiz..really good guy bought a P.S from him..almost a yr ago....still going strong....and the man even throw in NFS undercover for free !!!!

super tech is junk....bought mb there died just one week short the warranty....if i had tell them that a week later hard luck warranty up...and by the way they only offer 6 months warranty...see reverse side of your bill ......if you ever purchase from them.....

if you want to be sure get the customs and excise tariff book from the govt printery.....on victoria ave and tragerete road - i hope the directons correct

Spoke with someone form customs today, they say that certain parts they'll charge vat on, but entire pcs, no vat/customs duties. They couldn't give me a list of items which they'd tax.
