AMD receives $1.25 Billion US from Intel.

The healing begins.

Nearly a month ago, Intel and AMD announced a settlement of $1.25 billion to end the disputes between the companies.

AMD announced late Thursday that it has received the $1,250,000,000 from Intel, according to Trading Markets. This satisfies one of the terms of the settlements, which are:

Under terms of the agreement:

- AMD and Intel obtain patent rights from a new 5-year cross license agreement

- Intel and AMD will give up any claims of breach from the previous license agreement

- Intel will pay AMD $1.25 billion.

- Intel agrees to abide by a set of business practice provisions.

As a result, AMD will drop all pending litigation including the case in U.S. District Court in Delaware and two cases pending in Japan. AMD will also withdraw all of its regulatory complaints worldwide.

In a joint statement, the two companies commented, "While the relationship between the two companies has been difficult in the past, this agreement ends the legal disputes and enables the companies to focus all of our efforts on product innovation and development."

^^ Hmm apparently there was some kind of bribery Intel did with companies like DELL to only put intel CPU in their systems.

Remember it had a time when you could never even see an AMD chip in a DELL system. Seems like the EU found intel Guilty and was planning on charging them over a billion US for this kind of fraud.

I have been saying for a while now there was always something fishy about why so much companies like dell etc would use Intel and not AMD. Some ignorant and illiterate people always tried to put it that Intel was somehow vastly superior but this was not always true. AMD was the first to break the 1GHZ speed. The first to bring 64 bit technology to desktop pc etc

But Intel used bribe money to force companies not to purchase AMD chips leaving majority of AMD buyers like us the small man who build custom systems.

I think they got what they deserve here. Justice is served well done AMD.
Given the circumstances AMD even managed to buy ATI and now has the financial power to compete with Intel head on. ATI was worth a lot of money and have been the most advanced Graphics company after 3DFX Voodoo in those days. I would say AMD is a true example that hard work pays off and fair play will still win even against cheaters.

hey,
intel had "an understanding with dell and stuff....intel made their processors and offered them special rambus memory at a cheaper price and it was faster than DDR !!!
the thing was when someone bought a dell pc with rambus memory and wanted to upgrade only dell had it and you also had to use CRIMMS continunity RIMMS in the empty slot to make sure that the pc could work and these were also expensive....

basically when ppl realised what happened they stopped the intel and went AMD - that's when amd had the famous athlon socket A 462 chip that ran circles literally around the pentiums....

after the 5 yrs contract ended....dell started to use regualr DDR but still relied on itel to provide processors.....but system stability was only possible with kingston memory....also expensive...

dell realised that intel was charging too much per chip and saw AMd as cheaper and excellent replacement since the athlon ran better than the pentium 4 and some core 2 duo so they switched -- basically a cheaper pc to produce means more $$$ saved means more pc can be made for the same amount of $$

the downfall of the AMD was the semprons and stuff like that so that's why they stopped making them that's why you'll only find athlons now- to run against the pentium 4 and the core 2 duo and quad cores....

intel is sometimes vastly superior to amd depending on how you benchmark it and what the use for the processor is....

but at the end of the day..intel still has some good chips out there as do AMD.....

EU slaps a record fine on Intel $1.45 Billion US

EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes says Intel 'took advantage of their position'

Computer chipmaker Intel has been fined a record 1.06bn euros ($1.45bn; £948m) by the European Commission for anti-competitive practices.

The Commission said that personal computer makers Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and NEC had all been given hidden rebates if they only used Intel chips.

It is a major decision that shows the Commission is serious about curtailing abusive behaviour of dominant companies
David Anderson, lawyer, Berwin Leighton Paisner.
Will Intel change its ways?

It also found that Media Saturn, which owns Europe's biggest consumer electronics retailer Media Markt, had been given money so that it would only sell computers containing Intel chips.
"Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years," said Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes.
"Such a serious and sustained violation of the EU's antitrust rules cannot be tolerated."
