The Seismic Research Centre has been informed of a rumour that an earthquake is about to affect Trinidad. There is is no scientific evidence to suggest that we are more likely, within the next few hours, to have an earthquake, than we were before and the SRC has issued no release to this effect.
Earthquakes cannot currently be predicted. However, the pattern of seismicity in this part of the region enables us to conclude that Trinidad and Tobago is seismically active and earthquakes occur frequently. Most of these are not felt but it is possible to have a large and potentially damaging event at any time. All residents should be prepared for the possibility of a such an event and are therefore urged to ensure that they are aware of what to do before, during and after such an event. This website has several pages that contain such information.
