When Steve Jobs gave us a preview of Apple's next generation iPhone OS - iPhone OS 4, he talked about only 7 major features such as multitasking, folders, better mail app, iBooks, New Enterprise features, Game Centre and iAd out of the 100 new features.

But the fun part is to discover the features that Apple didn't mention. So in case you haven't stumbled upon them already, checkout some of the hidden features in iPhone OS 4.

We have already reported features such as ability to search for content on the web and Wikipedia directly from Spotlight, iPad-like spell checker, 5x digital zoom, Bluetooth Keyboard support, custom homescreen wallpaper and more.

As developers dig deeper into iPhone OS 4 beta, many more features are coming to light. Here is a list of the new features discovered so far.

Cellular Data Toggling: You have an option to toggle cellular data on or off.

Image

Messages Character Count: You can turn on the 'Character Count' option in Messages Settings in order to keep a tab on the number of characters while typing a message.

Image

Text Messages Search: iPhone OS 4 extends the iPhone's inbox search feature to text messages. You can finally search through your SMS messages.

Image

Camera Zooming: As reported earlier, users taking a picture from their iPhone will now see a sliding bar at the bottom of the screen to zoom in and out while taking a picture (up to 5x digital zoom). Alternately, tapping on the screen will also allow users to zoom in and out while taking a picture.

Image

Web and Wikipedia Search: As we had reported earlier, the global search screen on the iPhone now has two additional options - 'Search Web' and 'Search Wikipedia' to let users directly search for content on the web and Wikipedia.

Image

Document Border: Previewing documents on the iPhone will now display these files without the borders. This is expected to help squeeze in an additional pixel or two of content.

Image

Add New Contacts: The Contact window on the iPhone looks more streamlined in iPhone OS 4 allowing users to enter more details about the contact without navigating away from the main screen.

Image

iPhoto Syncing: iPhoto users can sync their photos to the iPhone via Events, Faces and Places. This will work for the iPad too.

Lyrics Data Toggling: A new global toggling option gives you the ability to turn the display of lyrics on or off.

Image

Photo Resize Option: Users sending large-size image files via email can choose to resize the photo on the go by selecting from the four different file size options.

Image

Add Playlist: The current on-the-go playlists will be replaced by the 'Add Playlist' option in iPhone OS 4 that will be automatically synced back to the users' iTunes account.

Image

Album Info: Browsing albums have traditionally displayed the tracks and the shuffle option. You can view the album thumbnail, track count, length of tracks and album release date.

Image

Location Services For Apps: You can enable or disable location services for each location based apps via Settings -> Location Services. Also, you also get visibility on the apps that have most recently accessed this information using the compass arrow icon.

Image

Email Threading: You can organize emails by thread in the Mail app just like in Gmail. Email threading option can be turned on or off via Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar and turn on or off the 'Organize By Thread' toggle (this feature was demoed during the iPhone OS 4 event, the screenshot shows you how it can be enabled).

Image

Longer Passcodes: Passcodes will no longer be limited to just 4 numbers. You can set a more secure alphanumeric and longer passcode for your iPhone. You can currently use the iPhone Configuration utility to achieve this.

Image

Alerts On App Folders: iPhone OS 4 gives you the ability to sort apps into folders. When any of the apps inside a folder receives an alert, you'll be informed of the same with an exclamation point over the main folder icon

Fewer than three weeks ago we wondered aloud if Opera Software's bid to get its Opera Mini browser into Apple's iPhone App Store was pure folly, or a gamble that Opera could actually win. On late Monday, Opera (and Apple) proved doubters and naysayers wrong (like me, I'll admit) when it approved Opera Mini for iPhone.
Apple's acceptance of a browser app may not seem like a big to-do, until one looks at Apple's notoriously stringent interpretation of the rules it created to keep competing software off the iPhone. Mobile browsers that compete with the iPhone's Safari browser do exist, but they're all based on the same WebKit browser engine used to power Safari. In contrast, Opera has coded Opera Mini using a combination of programming languages, without adopting WebKit. Apple has certainly denied apps for less.

------

Google is among a growing list of technology heavyweights who plan to face off against Apple's iPad with their own modern interpretations of a tablet computing device, according to the New York Times.

The newspaper reported Sunday that Google has been "exploring the idea of building its own slate, an e-reader that would function like a computer."

The initiative appears to be progressing beyond the conceptual stages, with chief executive Eric Schmidt reportedly talking up the device to his friends during a recent party out in Los Angeles.

According to the second hand comments, the device will exclusively run the search giant's Android operating. Google has reportedly been conducting research under "stealth mode" with a handful of publishers who are helping the company evaluate methods of delivering eBooks, magazines and other content to users through the device.

Since introducing its iPad earlier this month, Apple has gone on to sell more than a half million of the devices even before it's begun shipments of models that will include 3G connectivity in addition to standard WiFi hardware.

------

Geohot has now updated BlackRa1n to work for the iPhone 4.0 firmware as well.

Just three days ago he announced that BlackRa1n was updated for the iPad 3.2 firmware.

When Opera Software announced late Monday that its Opera Mini browser would hit the iPhone App Store, we guessed it wouldn't be long before we saw other browser-makers follow suit producing similar efforts that get around Apple's restrictions facing iPhone browsers that compete with the native Safari.

Looks like our guess was correct. On Tuesday, Skyfire, another mobile browser maker, blogged a post congratulating Opera for its success and stating Skyfire's intention to speed up its own development for "iDevices" like the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.
Of course, as a competitor, it is Skyfire CEO Jeff Glueck's prerogative to point out that Skyfire supports Flash and plays back video with its mobile proxy browser where Opera Mini for iPhone doesn't.

------

The iPhone OS 4 preview page on Apple’s website states that iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second and third-generation iPod touch.

Steve Jobs also responded to a user to confirm that iPhone OS 4 won’t work with the original iPhone and iPod Touch.

The iPhone OS 4 preview page also states that not all features are compatible with all iDevices and points out that the multitasking feature won’t be available for iPhone 3G and the second-generation iPod touch users.

Folks at Gizmodo who have been digging into iPhone OS 4 beta are reporting that iPhone 3G users also won’t be able to customize their homescreen wallpaper.

Though performance concerns due to only 128MB RAM in iPhone 3G, which is half the RAM available in iPhone 3GS could be a valid reason for not allowing multitasking, it would be ridiculous if iPhone 3G users can’t change something as simple as customizing iPhone homescreen wallpaper in iPhone OS 4.

Before iPhone 3G users get upset or angry, let's remember that this is the first beta version and several reports have suggested that it is quite buggy. So it very likely that this limitation is a bug that will be fixed in future iPhone OS 4 beta releases.

------

TheStreet’s Scott Moritz reports on a research note from analyst Ashok Kumar claiming that Apple has signed on with Sony for an 8-megapixel camera sensor for the 2011 iPhone.

Hello Sony (SNE), goodbye OmniVision (OVTI). Apple has picked Sony’s 8-megapixel camera chip for the 2011 iPhone, according to supply and manufacturing sources, said Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar.

If true, it’s good news for iPhone fans looking for more photo shooting power on their phones. But the move would displace OmniVision, Apple’s current camera supplier to the iPhone.

OmniVision has been reported to have received from Apple orders for 5-megapixel camera sensors for the next-generation iPhone expected to be introduced later this year. The iPhone 3GS currently sports a 3.2-megapixel sensor.

Moritz has had a spotty track record in his own predictions over the years, and has recently focused his efforts in large part on republishing information from research notes by Kumar, who carries a mixed record himself.

Apple has booked June 22nd at the Yerba Buena Center for Arts by the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

It's very possible that the date, booked under the name of Apple, will be used for the keynote presentation. Last year's keynote was on June 8th and the year before that it was on the 9th.

Recent evidence discovered in the iPhone OS 4.0 Beta reveals that the new iPhone will likely have two cameras to support video chat.

Based on that it looks to be about

this amount of time until the iPhone HD is debuted.

DarkMalloc, lilstevie, and iH8sn0w have posted a video showing a jailbroken iPhone 3G with multi-tasking enabled.

iH8sn0w has posted the following reasons for not offering a jailbreak for the beta OS.

1: It cannot restore on a PC, only a Mac can. There is no way to make it run on a PC.
2: Its very very buggy
3: This is meant for developers to test new api's.
4: it has a 58% success restore rate.
5: It would promote more piracy. Meaning users would illegally download the ipsw and bypass the UDID trap.

No new exploit was used; rather, a jailbroken device was upgraded in a manner which retained the jailbreak.

A French 3D modeler called Jpog has admitted to making the iPhone 4G back cover images with 3DS Max, reveals MobileCrunch.

It's likely he used Photoshop to add the grainy spy shot feel to the photos.

While the images have been proven fake many are hopeful that Apple will extend its aluminum design to the iPhone; which would give it a nice solid feel similar to the iPad.

Downgrade to 3.1.2 and use redsn0w 0.9.4 to jailbreak.

Thereafter if you have the older Bootloader (5.08), use FuzzyBand (from Cydia). If you dont have the older one, hard luck, you have to wait for an unlock.

Fuzzyband will tell u if you bootloader is compatible. I doubt it will be though.

Images have just leaked of what might be an iPhone 4G prototype found on the floor of a San Jose bar inside an iPhone 3G case.

Engadget received the photos from the new owner who is looking to sell the device.

Right now we don't have a ton of info on the device in question, but we can tell you that it apparently has a front facing camera (!), 80GB of storage (weird, right?), and isn't booting at this point (though it was previously, and running an OS that was decidedly new). It's not clear if this is definitely a production model, or just a prototype that found its way into the world, but it's certainly a compelling design, no matter how you look at it.

Update: As a number of commenters and tipsters pointed out, this looks almost exactly like a Twitpic posted by TUDream on February 20th, which we're throwing after the break if for whatever reason the source link goes down. It's low-res, shows an indiscriminate bit of the inside, and some mysterious button in the middle of the other side. The mic holes on this pic seems to be larger, too..
