A "minor" solar flare hit the Earth on Sunday, 8.1.10 and is continuing through 8.5.10. Research indicates many more larger bursts are coming. Washington, D.C. is planning for increasing disruptions which will knock out mobile phones, emergency services, financial services, power grids, navigation systems in airplanes, etc. and satellites. The domino effect of electronic devices going down will cause massive economic loss to governments around the world. In an additional article from the United Kingdom, it was stated that "large swathes of the Earth" would be "without power for several months."
The Northern Lights, i.e., Aurora Borealis, have already been seen in Wisconsin in the U.S.A. and Omaha, Nebraska's local KETV news showed photos of it on 8.5.10 and had reported last night that this area might be able to see the lights, also. Their news article reported it "could be seen from Maine to Michigan and in other northern areas around the globe." The plasma coming out of the sun can disrupt our Earth's magnetic field.
"That's because of two minor solar storms that flared on Sunday and are shooting tons of plasma directly at Earth."

A head scientist at NASA, Dr. Fischer, with twenty years' experience, has outlined what to expect in the below URL article which was published in the United Kingdom by "The Telegraph" on June 14, 2010.
EXCERPTS:
"In a new warning, Nasa said the super storm would hit like “a bolt of lightning” and could cause catastrophic consequences for the world’s health, emergency services and national security unless precautions are taken.
Scientists believe it could damage everything from emergency services’ systems, hospital equipment, banking systems and air traffic control devices, through to “everyday” items such as home computers, iPods and Sat Navs.
Due to humans’ heavy reliance on electronic devices, which are sensitive to magnetic energy, the storm could leave a multi-billion pound damage bill and “potentially devastating” problems for governments."
Also:
"The National Academy of Sciences warned two years ago that power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications could “all be knocked out by intense solar activity”.
It warned a powerful solar storm could cause “twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina”. That storm devastated New Orleans in 2005 and left an estimated damage bill of more than $125bn (£85bn).
Dr Fisher said precautions could be taken including creating back up systems for hospitals and power grids and allow development on satellite “safe modes”.
“If you know that a hazard is coming … and you have time enough to prepare and take precautions, then you can avoid trouble,” he added.
His division, a department of the Science Mission Directorate at Nasa headquarters in Washington DC, which investigates the Sun’s influence on the earth, uses dozens of satellites to study the threat.
The government has said it was aware of the threat and “contingency plans were in place” to cope with the fall out from such a storm.
These included allowing for certain transformers at the edge of the National Grid to be temporarily switched off and to improve voltage levels throughout the network.
The National Risk Register, established in 2008 to identify different dangers to Britain, also has “comprehensive” plans on how to handle a complete outage of electricity supplies."

MY NOTE: there needs to be a major, continuing effort in this country to teach people right away...how to survive everyday life without electricity. If business leaders want to survive economically, then they had better gather together and establish plans now. Reinstitute the "Town Square" system of posting community or city messages and train horses and riders if you have to bring back the Pony Express to get information from city to city. Would ham radios work without power? Train more people how to use them and include those radios in community centers. Install building doors that can be opened with lock and key again, since electronic key cards will not be working. Make sure stairwells are prepared with alternate lighting in those same buildings.
Develop the earlier means of transportation without relying upon electricity or batteries. Everything from bicycles to horse-drawn carts. Figure out how to get water when city pumping stations cannot work without electricity. Set up the early 1900s "ice block" deliveries so people can keep food and medicine cool. Have hand-waved fans available for patients who rely on air conditioning for breathing, along with large ice blocks to cool their rooms. Promote generators that are not defective in workmanship and keep gasoline fuel at central locations so people can operate their generators. Make resources accessible throughout major cities in several areas, so people can walk to their usual large or small grocery or hardware stores to get needed items when cars and other battery-driven vehicles will be unable to cross the city. Make sure pharmacies are included in the plan so medicines can be given. And most of all, get doctors' offices and hospitals to scrap those horrendous "electronic records" programs because no one's records will be available unless each patient is smart enough to gather their own copies of lab tests and procedures, diagnoses and health histories. As it is, doctors do not have time to scroll through all of those pages for patients. It was a lot faster to find the specific record in a hard-bound file.
If our ancestors did it, living without electricity, we can, also. The biggest difference between us and them is that our weather is much more intense in temperature extremes and in violent storms now, so we need to add more survival protection to be able to handle such things without electricity when the solar flares and magnetic pole reversals and ice storms begin afflicting the Earth.

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 216 Issued at 2200Z on 04 Aug 2010
IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 03/2100Z
to 04/2100Z: Solar activity remained at very low levels. New Region
1093 (N10E63) produced a few B-class flares as it rotated into view
and was classified as a Cao-type group with a beta magnetic
configuration. Region 1092 (N14W15) was quiet and stable during the
period.
IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very
low. However, there will be a chance for an isolated C-class flare
from Region 1093.
IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 03/2100Z to 04/2100Z:
Geomagnetic field activity ranged from unsettled to major storm
levels due to a CME passage associated with a long-duration C3 flare
on 01 August. The major storm levels occurred during 03/2100 -
04/0300Z and were associated with increased solar wind velocities
(peak 657 km/s), increased IMF BT (peak 18 nT), and a sustained
period of southward IMF Bz (peak deflection -13 nT). Activity was at
unsettled to minor storm levels after 04/0300Z. The greater than 2
MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit decreased to normal to
moderate levels.
IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: Geomagnetic field activity is
expected to be at unsettled to active levels until midday on day 1
(05 August). Activity is forecast to increase to active to minor
storm levels with a chance for major storm levels beginning midday
on 05 August due to the expected arrival of a CME associated with a
large filament disappearance on 01 August. Activity is expected to
decrease to unsettled to minor storm levels on day 2 (06 August) as
the CME passage continues. A further decrease to quiet to unsettled
levels is expected on day 3 (07 August).
