The math just does not add up on the cost of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her party's ten-day trip to New York that is estimated to be $400,000. According to the press release, the contingent includes the Prime Minister; Ministers Moonilal, Karim, Roberts; Garvin Nicholas and Gary Griffith; and members of the their families.
It was reported via a Caribbean Airlines source that the entire first-class section of the plane was booked to accommodate Persad-Bissessar, members of her Cabinet and their families who were aboard the flight. Let us take a conservative estimate of 15 person on first class return flight to NY - this costs approximately TT$15,000 per person, for a total cost of $225,000 for 15 persons.
A low-cost hotel in New York comes in at approximately US$300 per night; I am sure the PM and Ministers stay in far more expensive rooms but the total hotel cost for 15 people for 10 nights in a low-cost room is $270,000.
A conservative estimate for airfare and hotel is almost $500,000; adding meals and other services will bring this total cost estimate to more than $750,000. If, as reported, the entire first-class section was booked, then the costs are even more.
Since this trip was supposed to also promote trade, tourism, and develop and deepen relationships, one is puzzled why the Ministers of Trade, Tourism, and Foreign Affairs were not included in the touring party but the Ministers of Tertiary Education, Sport and Youth Affairs, and Housing and the Environment are in that contingent. As a strong supporter of this Government I am very disappointed.

Because the pp is in power you believe that only *indian* people benefit, the reason for the crime situation today was because of this same scenario, to have a country properly functioning ALL citizens must be treated fairly, because of the PNM's lack of foresight a lot of people who are their supporters were neglected and forced to live a life of abject need fro a hand out from teh government instead of programs to properly treat with the social ills of the supporters, as a result of this many persons of African origin were forced to participate in hand to mouth living just barely raking in enough to survive. You seriously think that a man that is content and can provide for his family will go and rob somebody.
The only way to prosper as a people is to forget racial differences and treat with the poor and neglected in our country. Why try to make the rich richer, deal with the drug problem instead of pampering the elite that bring it in, ensure that proper social services are in place, ensure that the necessary checks and balances are in place for the distribution of state funds and T&T will really deserve the moniker SWEET!

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar fell ill in New York, USA, and was unable to speak at the India Day parade where she was invited as the guest of honour.
Press Secretary Garvin Nicholas, who is also in New York, told the Express by phone that Persad-Bissessar was under the weather and visited the doctor to ensure that her coughing was not attributed to a serious ailment.
Although she was not feeling well, Persad-Bissessar did make the effort to attend the parade which took place in Madison Avenue, New York, and walked alongside the Grand Marshal, Bollywood superstar Preity Zinta.
Nicholas said Persad-Bissessar skipped the evening's events following the parade and rested.
"She has to take a rest, she's been going non-stop for the last eight months. The prudent thing to do was to take it easy," said Nicholas.
He said the Prime Minister will return, as scheduled, on August 22.
Nicholas said Persad-Bissessar received a warm welcome during the parade.
"She was extremely well received. Thousands of people lined Madison Avenue. There was a Trinidad and Tobago float in the parade. For the first time people who live in New York are really pleased to interact with their Prime Minister," said Nicholas.
He said Persad-Bissessar will go ahead as planned with meetings scheduled this week.
"She still has a number of things to do this week. A number of business meetings. There are a lot of people who are interested in investing in Trinidad and Tobago; she will be meeting with various groups this week" he said.
Asked about the fund-raising events Persad-Bissessar attended and whether the money raised was for the party, Nicholas said all funds will be deposited into the Children's Life Fund.
"It has truly been excellent, people were excited to see the Prime Minister. She has been pushing the Children's Life Fund and raising money. She has raised a lot of funds far exceeding the cost of the trip," said Nicholas.
Last week, Nicholas indicated that the Prime Minister's trip to New York cost just under $400,000.
Commenting on criticisms of Persad-Bissessar's trip, he said, "There will obviously be people in Trinidad and Tobago who would look for any opportunity to criticise the Prime Minister. There is very little she has done wrong to date."
Nicholas said Persad-Bissessar has been connecting with citizens of Trinidad and Tobago who migrated to the United States and urging them to return home.
"Some people have already expressed the desire and will to return home now that things are changing. A lot of people did not feel appreciated in the past. Now there is a renewed hope that this administration will also be able to deal with the crime issue and the state of the economy," said Nicholas.
Today Persad-Bissessar is scheduled to meet with GOPIO at the Marriot Marquis, New York, followed by a business meeting at the same venue.
She is also scheduled to attend the Federation of Indian Associations dinner at Royal Albert's Palace, New Jersey.
Also accompanying Persad-Bissessar on her trip to New York are Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma, Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal, Sports Minister Anil Roberts, Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim, Public Administration Minister Rudrawatee Ramgoolam, and Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism Winston "Gypsy" Peters.

Dude , its not a matter of the PP spending money. Its a matter of these PNM clowns looking for every fault in the PP. Where were these PNM clowns when 3 Billion dollars was wasted on two summits in one year that brought nothing for us?

forget the clowns who supposedly stayed quiet when the PNM was in power...
how long will the PP keep dwelling on this and holding back progress?
The PP promised changes, transparency and a halt to all the supposed squandermania, double standards, neoptism etc
That they won the general elections shows how many people put aside supposed race and party loyalties in favor of true change, and the hope of a new day and a bright future
To date, how many can say the PP is delivering on this promise?
If the Summit and CHOGM weer in fact so unnceessary, then this thing Kamla went to is completely irrelevant to this country moving forward.......
If they really cared to make a difference they would give the people of this country a true voice...........take the money for that trip and put feedback boxes in every spot where the EBC had polling stations. Provide pen and paper so every citizen, no matter how remote, has an opportinity to list what he needs to be done to improve his or her life. All those rural citizens who have no proper roads, bridges, water, lights..........give them a means to cry for help, not sit , wait and hope for an MP to pass or TV6 to do a special when they finally burn tyres in the road...
Commission a full asessment of the condition of All the nation's roads, every single one......assess condtion, foundation, structure, traffic, and develop a plan to deal with them all......not randomly put down piss poor patches on the left lane of the southbound and complain how badly it was done by the PNM...............
Hire some professionals who did not get their license from a Sunshine Frosted Flakes box to revamp all the nonsensical road signs and traffic lights so that they make sense...since when is it 'left lane for slower traffic'?????? What? Complain and say 'PNM do it'? Or fixx the damn sign to reflect the proper law?????
Simple things, very simple things can be done to move this country forward, instead of rubbling nipples and putting feet up on ministerial desks and bawling is we time now.....
The time for hard work is NOW, and these fools on vacation
Five years from now, maybe less, those who have been betrayed by the PP will welcome the PNM back with open arms, just as was done after the UNC did the same crap when they won..............
