SR20ve Engine Rattle

Postby V2NR 3.0 » February 3rd, 2011, 7:45 am

Within the last two days, a rattling noise developed in the engine. The rattling noise is similar to when the timing chain is stretched or tensioner.

Everything else was serviced and in good working condition

Application is SR20ve (vvl) FWD.

Question:

1. What would cause the cams to develop wear and tear ?
2. Would a failing oil pump cause this to happen ?
3. Would a blockage in one of the oil veins in the engine lead to this ?
4. If i drop off the sump - would there be filings from wear and tear in the sump ?

Planned Action Today:

1. Check internal oil strainer
2. Drop of sump and look for evidence of filings
3. Drop out one of the mains and have a look at bearing

Engine is approx 3 years old...feedback

Guys i need some help with this one...

What we did so far:

1. Check internal oil strainer - Clean and good - no filings found
2. Drop of sump and look for evidence of filings - everything good
3. Drop out one of the mains and have a look at bearing - bearings and rods good...

HELP ! ! SOS ! !

Is it a loud rattle or a soft one? What type of oil you use?

I will you tube a video of the noise later on.

Car is idling - you tip the X and the rattle sounds...youre driving and every time you stamp the X the noise is there...

Im using mobil clean 20/50 - changed to Quaker State 20/50 and the noise is still there...

Should i be using a thinner oil ?

You check your timing? I'm hoping it not you chain or even your tensioner!

This is what the noise sounds like...yeah ah know - it looking lil dusty...

1. Listen as i yank the tb to simulate tipping the gas pedal. Notice the rattle noise ? -

2. Listen as i gradually rev the engine - no noise.

Its only when you tip the "pedal" that the noise comes. On driving - when you accelerate its there as well..

Your flex joint is worn. That's not a rattle. It's raw engine noise.

That sheit sounding like a lazy or a dead lifter. Take a screw driver and put it on the cover and the other end to your ear to single it out.

Remove EMF shield & ensure you don't have a crack. It happens !

It's weird cause that's how my engine was before the bearing spun!

could be a bearing just before it let's go...

though you've said you've inspected them...

if it's not the chain or tensioner then it could be the piston pin (wrist pin)...

did you overheat it recently or could be too much high revs...

hope you get it sorted!
