Not sure if this has been answered before, but I could not find any info on it. Has anyone successfully tethered an iPad to use a blackberry's internet connection? I have jbroken my iPad and installed iBluever but cannot get it to work. iBluever connects to the phone without a problem but when i try to use safari I get an error saying that tunneling through port 80 is not allowed. My carrier is Digicel.

Has anyone tried this?

Using iBluever I put the APN as web.digiceltt.com and the dialup number I am using is *99#. I leave the User and Password fields blank. I am also using PDAnet on the Blackberry for the Bluetooth connection between the blackberry and iPad.

It connects to the blackberry but when I try to surf the net I get an error saying that tunneling on Port 80 is not allowed.

What do you think?

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/apple-ceo-just-six-weeks-live-report-20110217-071343-958.html

Apple CEO has just six weeks to live: Report

London, Feb 17 (IANS) Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs has terminal pancreatic cancer and may live for just six more weeks, a media report said Thursday.

The 55-year-old Jobs in January announced that at his request, the board of directors granted him a medical leave of absence so that he could focus on his health.

Since then, employees have said Jobs can still be seen at the company's headquarters in California and is also calling all the strategic shots from his home.

Now, new pictures have been published in the tabloid National Enquirer, which suggest things may be worse for the the man behind the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

The report said Jobs is stricken with pancreatic cancer and may have just six weeks to live.

The new photos show him looking painfully frail and weak, with his jeans and dark top hanging loosely on his six-feet-two-inches, frail body, the Daily Mail reported.

The pictures were not yet available online, but Jobs's weight is said to have dropped from a pre-cancer 175 pounds to 130 pounds now, according to the National Enquirer.

His thinning hair was a sign of the effects of chemotherapy used to treat the disease.

The photos, which were taken Feb 8, showed Jobs going for breakfast with his wife Laurene Powell before heading to the Stanford Cancer Centre in California.

Jerome Spunberg, a doctor, said: 'Mr. Jobs is most likely getting outpatient chemotherapy at Stanford because the cancer has recurred.'

Gabe Mirkin, a physician with 40 years' experience, said: 'He is terminal. What you are seeing is extreme muscle wasting from calorie deprivation, most likely caused by cancer. He has no muscle left in his buttocks, which is the last place to go.'

'He definitely appears to be in the terminal stages of his life from these photos. I would be surprised if he weighed more than 130 pounds.'

Critical care physician Samuel Jacobson also said: 'Judging from the photos, he is close to terminal. I would say he has six weeks.'

A source, who recently saw Jobs, added: 'He is very frail, moving like a weak, feeble old man. He weaves back and forth when he walks, as if he is having trouble keeping his balance, and the pain of every step is evident on his face.'

The Apple CEO, who is worth $6 billion, is currently on his third medical leave, and has battled a rare form of pancreatic cancer for seven years and had a liver transplant in 2009.

An Apple spokesman did not comment on the new photos.

God I hope that's not the case.

Ironically I watched a YouTube video where that was the subject.

Oh & reports are that Steve did attend the meeting with Obama yesterday. (Still lol'ing about that pic I posted above)

---

Despite being on medical leave, Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs attended the meeting with President Obama he was invited to as Silicon Valley leader.

While he remained out of sight of the pool of reporters covering the event, a White House official confirmed that all those invited were in attendance, according to a report by Reuters.

In addition to Apple's Jobs, Obama's conference with Silicon Valley executives, held at the home of John Doerr of venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers earlier this evening, was also said to have invited:

Carol Bartz, president and CEO of Yahoo!
John Chambers, CEO and chairman of Cisco Systems,
    Dick Costolo, CEO of Twitter,
    Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle,
    Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix,
John Hennessy, president of Stanford University,
Art Levinson, chairman and former CEO of Genentech,
    Eric Schmidt, chairman of Google,
Steve Westly, Managing Partner and Founder of The Westly Group and
Mark Zuckerberg, president and CEO of Facebook.

Reuters reported that the meeting, part of Obama's two-day West Coast visit, "was aimed at promoting technological innovation to help boost the struggling U.S. economy and reduce stubbornly high unemployment -- considered crucial to his 2012 re-election chances."

One issue likely to be raised at the meeting is a proposal to allow US corporations to repatriate foreign cash reserves via a temporary tax holiday, a plan that is being sold as a way to boost the country's economic recovery and create jobs through domestic investment.

Yesterday it was reported that Jobs had been seen at the Stanford Cancer Center, ostensibly to receive additional treatment. A tabloid is said to be publishing paparazzi photos and arranged to have a doctor make a diagnosis of Jobs' condition based on the photos they had obtained.

Apple has not provided updates on Jobs' condition, although he has been reported to be actively involved in the company's ongoing planning and management decisions and is said to frequently visit the company's Cupertino headquarters, even as the company's chief operations officer Tim Cook handles the remainder of its duties while Jobs remains on medical leave.

The iPhone 4 Steve Jobs presented to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is still locked to AT&T, according to a tweet by Arkady Dvorkovich, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation.

@babdima that the phone was flashing AT&T, here - not working:)

Jobs gave Medvedev the phone during his visit to Apple in June 2010.

SuperApple.cz claims that even though Apple has been reluctant about releasing a smaller iPad, Apple is still working on two models with screen sizes close to 6 inches. Specifically, the report claims that Apple is working on a 5.7-inch model and another model just below 6 inches. They claim that this information comes from two separate sources so the minimal size difference might really not be a difference at all.

Apple has been known to explore multiple screen sizes before releasing their final products and an example of this is the iPad. In an earnings call last year Steve Jobs said that Apple worked to get the display size just right before deciding on the 9.7 inch size. Although the report about a new 6 inch device for 2011 is calling this device an iPad, we think this could be a larger iPod touch. Apple has said that they are not going to release a mini-tablet for various reasons, so why would they?

A 6-inch iPod touch could make sense for better gaming, a bit more productivity, and would help Apple go head-to-head with some of the upcoming pocket game consoles with 4-5-6-inch displays. Apple could even throw some 3D action onto the thing. The report speculates that we’ll see this 6-inch iPad in the middle of 2011, but we like to think we will be seeing a 6-inch iPod touch debut at Apple’s annual Fall event.

This device would be ideal for the holiday shopping season and this is around the time that Sony will be unleashing their PSP 2 called NGP with a very large display and touch interface. According to two reports, Apple has something tablet/touch related in the works for a Fall 2011 launch, with one report even calling it a “Fall surprise.” A report from China in late 2010 also claimed that Apple was still working on a smaller iPad and they said it looks like an iPhone. With minimal design variation between the iPhone and iPod touches of today, it is all starting to make sense.

Earlier this month a report from iLounge (who has accurate sources for product sizes) claimed that Apple is in fact still working on a smaller iPad. What do you think? Will it happen? Will it be an iPad nano? An iPod touch XL?

Not the Apple TV, but an Apple television. Apple has posted a new job position looking for people to work on next-generation power supply technology. Apple needs people to to “work on the forefront of new power management designs and technologies with the exemplary company consistently bringing innovations in the industry.” Although some mind find that fascinating, we find what Apple needs this new power management technology to power even more interesting… TVs!

Apple separates ”TV” from “standalone displays” making it clear these are actual televisions, not Apple’s regular LED displays. Apple does have a television accessory called Apple TV and the job posting does not note this being that product. We are certainty speculating a little bit here, but we do feel this is very interesting either way. Over the years a number of reports emerged Apple was working on an actual TV, including reports from analyst Gene Munster in 2009 and a few weeks ago.

------

Following the reports claiming that Apple will be launching an update to the MacBook Pro line late next week, MacRumors has independently sourced that this update will occur on Thursday, February 24th. Get your plastic ready! (I am)

Yesterday, some rumors began to circulate that Final Fantasy III would soon be getting an iPhone port. However, that's where the news stopped. Two problems arose: A) the news was based off of a scan of a Japanese magazine that nobody could read to confirm the news, and B) nobody knew whether the game (if it existed at all) was coming to territories outside of Japan. Today Square Enix offered an official word on the matter, and we can all rejoice in the knowledge that one of the lost Final Fantasy games will find its way to North America on the iPhone.

Square Enix's downloadable games division tweeted the news today, confirming the suspicions. The company twitter account stated enthusiastically, "FINAL FANTASY III coming next month!!!!!" It also offered a URL which leads only to a basic webpage with a Final Fantasy III logo and some basic mystical Final Fantasy theme music.

Nothing yet is known about the port. It remains to be seen whether the game will be enhanced like the Nintendo DS version, or if the game will be based off of the original Japanese Famicom (NES) game. Prior to its 2006 rerelease on the Nintendo DS, Final Fantasy III had never before been released outside of Japan, making it something of a legend to North American gamers. It was the first game in the Final Fantasy series to feature the popular and influential "job" system for character classes.

No pricing information has yet been announced, however, given that both the previous Final Fantasy iOS releases (Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II) are priced at $8.99 it seems like that's a pretty reliable guess.

Bundled packages of MacBook Pros reportedly being delivered to resellers and Apple Stores are set to be unwrapped for Steve Jobs' birthday, AppleInsider can confirm.

Jobs, Apple's co-founder and chief executive, turns 56 on February 24. And all signs from within the company suggest that it will use that day -- a Thursday as opposed to the traditional Tuesday -- to unveil the new notebooks, according to people familiar with the matter.

That's the same day previously reported by MacRumors as being 'reliably confirmed' as the expected ship date for the new models. It was previously presumed that this coming Thursday was chosen because it was the earliest possible date Apple could facilitate the much needed MacBook Pro refresh, but chatter from within the company now suggests the timing is intentional.

That date also harmonizes with an earlier report which stated Apple was accelerating its MacBook Pro update, originally expected in early March, for an earlier launch date in late February.

Apple has reportedly advised some of its partners that it may begin shipping sealed packages to stores ahead of a formal announcement, and that those partners are under strict warnings not to open or examine their contents under threat of having their licenses to sell the company's products revoked if they do.

Supplies of the company's high end notebooks have become greatly constrained in anticipation of the launch.

Last year, Apple noted that February 24 marked the 10 billionth song sale in iTunes, a key measure of success for a strategy closely linked to Jobs' efforts to revolutionize the sale distribution of music over the last decade in conjunction with the iPod. However, the company did not call public attention to the birthday of its co-founder and chief executive.

Apple's annual shareholder meetings have also coincided with or near Jobs' birthday, which resulted in shareholders once toasting the executive with the singing of the Happy Birthday anthem. That was done at the suggestion of an attendee, however, and was not led by company representatives themselves.

This year, Apple's shareholder meeting is scheduled for February 23, the day before Jobs' birthday and the expected release date of the new MacBook Pros. While Jobs has largely remained very private about his own history and personal details, including his heath, the company may wish to honor him given his reduced role at Apple during his existing medical leave.

Over the last decade, Jobs has battled pancreatic cancer, undergoing surgery, additional therapy in Switzerland, and finally a liver transplant, procedures that left him appearing physically frail even as he continued to revolutionize the markets for music, smartphones, mobile software, tablets and highly mobile notebooks.

Last week, Jobs met with President Obama among a group of Silicon Valley leaders, but his condition has also been the subject of reports that indicate he has returned to the Stanford Cancer Center, ostensibly for a new round of treatments.

According to a BGR source, the updated MacBook Pro line will feature an even larger glass trackpad than the one we all know and love, with Apple going for the ‘bigger is better’ approach when it comes to its input methods.

The second on the list of possible changes is a drop in weight. Presumably taking lessons learned from the new MacBook Air models, Apple reportedly managed to shave around half a pound from the new MBPs when compared to the current hardware. Hopefully a lighter body doesn’t detract from that ‘quality feel’ we so adore.

Finally there’s the wildcard amongst the three changes detailed by BGR. Their source claimed the new systems will ship with their operating system installed on a small SSD, presumably either 8GB or 16GB while a standard spindle disk will be included for apps and other data. An interesting half-way-house for those wanting the speed and wake-time of the new MacBook Airs while not skimping on screen size or storage. A full SSD option will also be available, says the source.

------

According to two independent notes issued on Tuesday, both of Apple’s flagship iOS products for 2011 may be delayed. First, FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger claims that the next-generation iPhone may be delayed until September. “For the iPhone 5, we continue to hear that a July launch is unlikely, with various casing suppliers and touch suppliers still ramping up, with some chip vendors not having yet received firm iPhone 5 orders, and with other sockets like the image sensor (most likely going to Omnivision exclusively, but with some potential for Sony to split that socket) still in flux,” Berger wrote in a note to investors. “Given these factors, we think a September launch is more likely, off from Apple’s traditional iPhone launch schedule, but giving the firm more time to enhance its next-generation instant communications on the phone.” Berger also claims that Apple intends to build 100 million iPhone handsets during the 2011 calendar year, up from FBC’s previous estimate of 75 million.

Separately, Yuanta Securities Co. on Tuesday issued a research note suggesting Apple’s next-generation iPad, which it claims was slated for an April release, may be delayed until June. Yuanta analysts Vincent Chen and Alison Chen report that production bottlenecks caused by last minute design changes from Apple are the cause of the delay. “Our checks suggest new issues are being encountered with the new production and it is taking time to resolve them,” wrote Chen and Chen in their report. “As a number of Android 3.0 tablets are being launched in April and May, the delay in iPad 2 shipments may give the Android camp a brief window of opportunity.”

Neither report carries any firm evidence to support the claimed delays.

Specifications on the new MacBook Pros expected Thursday have been leaked again this time from MacGeneration.

MacRumors summarizes the rumors:
    ● no more white MacBook (Apple goes back to two lines of 13" inchers)
    ● 16 GB SSD mSATA drives on all models to store the system
    ● Core i3 and third USB port on the 13" model
    ● Matte screen option on the higher-end 13"
    ● Option to replace the SuperDrive with a SSD on the 15 and 17" models
    ● HD screens on all models : 1440x900 on the 13", 1680x1050 on the 15"
    ● 200 to 300 grams lighter : 1.8 kg for the 13", 2.3 kg for the 15", 2.65 kg for the 17"
    ● Better battery life : 12 hours on the 13", 10 hours on the 15"
    ● 8 GB of RAM on the 17"

MacGeneration again mentions a new technology that may very well be Light Peak.

Finally, we spoke of "new technology" that would make his first steps in these new MacBook Pro: Integrating Light Peak in the third USB port? New battery technology? New materials explaining the drop weight? Impossible to know for now, but the wait will last only until Thursday.

Guys...I have seen the light.
I have understood the philosophy behind Job's and Apples design and closed structure.

Windows Phone 7 has copied Apple...and I just picked up my first WP7 device.
The close eco-system is best. The entire design concept actually is how I like my products.
It truly is.
You were right all along, I was just not ready...

Forgive me

I used to be rooting for Android after the whole slow death of Symbian thing...
But I was actually forced into WP7 through a sweet free deal through my carrier.
I have not looked back...the design concept of Apple can be seen through out the entire U/I.

IT JUST NEEDS TO WORK!

Flash really isn't that important for something as small as a cellphone screen, added to which HTML5 really is the future. Less Plugins!!!

Trying to have everything open on your phone just leads to it being sluggish and bogged down with too much info to compress. True Multi-Tasking is really not ideal for a phone, all it does it kill the battery faster...the use of SD cards as compared to NAND is a Pain in the rass as not only are they prone to getting lost...but it constantly slows down the phone as it's always trying to access it.

Look at any Android phone, suffering from huge levels of fragmentation and constant lag...it's annoying. Guys over on XDA just getting tired of writing roms... it's no longer for fun, it became a necessity for Android to run smoothly. They're all over the WP7 and iPhone subsections...they're just tired. It's only fun for so long... Before you just want a device that JUST WORKS, straight out of the box.

I've said it before, I believe Android is going to go the way of the old Windows Mobile. Windows Phone is a breath of fresh are, and I have to thank Apple for changing the game-Microsoft really had to copy them to keep up.

:)

Now we finally have a date for what we all assume will be the iPad 2 announcement, we won’t have to wait much longer until we get to see the new model in all its glory. Until then though, feast your eyes on these new mockups courtesy of 9to5Mac.

Originally from a Japanese blog, the photos show a mockup of what appears to be a next-generation iPad 2, complete with the new speaker grill. Another stand-out design feature is the new chassis, which is noticeably thinner than the model we’re all using right now. Has Apple found a way to make the already svelte iPad even thinner, and presumably lighter as well?

According to a (badly) translated quote from the Japanese site, the mockup comes from Shenzhen:

Our monthly meeting of the parts procurement and manufacturing of original products repair, go to Shenzhen in the case or buying accessories. This city has a variety of products and components are distributed in the city say the head temple of PCs and mobile phones. In some cases manufacturing plant next to the city in December 2010 iPad (iPad 2) model (a simple reproduction of original size) seen.In some cases the factory since then have seen a product called iPad2 case.

It’s getting closer folks, only a few more days until we find out just how accurate this mockup is!

Leaked retail box shots of the upcoming MacBook Pro outlines a new feature, dubbed as FaceTime HD, which hints towards High-Definition 720p video chat coming to soon-to-be-released MacBook Pro line.

Also as 9to5Mac points out, could this also mean FaceTime HD video calls coming to the next-gen iPad, iPhone and iPod touch too? That we’ll surely find out next week, on March 2nd, when Apple finally unveils iPad 2 to the world.

If Steve Jobs were to step down as the CEO of Apple, what effect -- if any -- would it have on the likelihood of buying Apple products in the future?

Research firms RBC Capital Markets and ChangeWave asked Apple customers this question in a survey conducted between January 31 and February 9. Of the 3,091 respondents, 84% said Steve Jobs departing Apple would have no impact on their buying decisions and only 7% said they would be less likely to purchase Apple products.

The new results are a notable change from a similar survey completed in June, 2008. In the 2008 survey, 18% of respondents expressed a lower interest in buying from Apple if Steve Jobs left the company.

On January 17, Apple announced Jobs would take his third leave of absence for medical reasons, igniting new concerns among investors and fans about the future of Apple without Jobs at the helm. This past week, Apple shares tumbled about 7% after new worries about the CEO's health began to circulate.

Analyst Mike Abramsky suggests this survey shows that Apple may be bigger than its CEO; that Apple isn't just about Jobs anymore.

"Consumers have had 3 years to evolve their perception of the Apple brand around its creative new products, cutting edge innovation, iTunes/App Store ecosystem and premium quality positioning -- beyond the buying pull of Apple's iconic CEO," Abramsky said.

When Steve Jobs took a medical leave of absence in 2009, customers watched Apple perform successfully with Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook running the company. The company's stock rose 144%, revenue grew by 20%, and Apple shipped 25 million iPhones. This success seems to have boosted customer confidence in Apple.

It appears that FaceTime is getting a FaceLift (see what I did there?) with the release of the MacBook Pros tomorrow. Along with coming out of beta, it is likely to support those FaceTime HD™ cameras.
