Girl, 12, in hospital after 'rape in drain'
Story Created: Mar 13, 2011 at 11:50 PM ECT

Story Updated: Mar 13, 2011 at 11:50 PM ECT

A 12-year-old girl remains at the Mt Hope Hospital after allegedly being raped by a man on Saturday night.

According to police reports, around 8.30 p.m., the girl, a secondary school pupil, was walking along a track near Dinsley Junction with her brother and a male family friend, when a man armed with a gun confronted the group.

The man, according to police, pointed the gun at the males and ordered them to run off.

The girl was then pushed into a nearby drain, where she was raped by the man. The man then ran off.

The girl managed to flag down a passing car and was taken to the Arouca Police Station.

She was immediately taken to hospital. Investigations are continuing.

It was in Sunday's newsday, know a teacher working in the school she attended, she alleged that the girl was gang raped by four boys. This place is getting real sick, people have to safeguard their children.

On todays news also heard about a 62yr old man raping a 7yr old girl, my gosh, what could possess these people.

I don't think they could have done much seeing the man had a gun, best thing to do was go for help.

Surprising that the perp still had enough time to commit the rape, only lends itself for me to believe that he cannot perform for long and as a result can't please a woman, so he resorts to rape :?

Girl, 12, raped

By Anna-Lisa Paul Monday, March 14 2011

Police officials have issued a warning to women and girls living in the Tacarigua area to exercise extreme caution as a serial rapist is reported to be on the loose.

A manhunt was launched yesterday for the suspect who is said to be of African descent and who assaulted a 12-year-old student on Saturday evening. Reports indicate that shortly after 6 pm on Saturday, the Form One student of the Mount Hope Secondary School was on her way home, in the company of her 16-year-old brother and their teenaged friend when they were approached by the man who was armed with a gun.

The assailant reportedly robbed the boys before he ordered them to leave, and forced the girl into a nearby drain where he sexually assaulted her before escaping on foot.

The traumatised student is reported to have made her way to the Arouca Police Station where a report was made.

She was later taken to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex for medical treatment. Investigations are said to be continuing.

Schoolgirl, 15, dies mysteriously

By LAUREL V WILLIAMS Sunday, March 13 2011

MYSTERY surrounds the death of a secondary school student who was pronounced dead at the Penal Health Centre on Friday.

Dead is Karen Ravina Pustam, 15, a Form Four student of the Penal Secondary School, formerly Penal Junior Secondary. Pustam lived with her mother Shiela Sookoo, 47, brother Keron,12, and an aunt at Digity Trace, off Clarke Road in Penal.

Sookoo, a canteen worker at the school explained she received a telephone call at about midday Friday from a male who informed her that her teenaged daughter was at the health institution. When the mother arrived, she learnt that Pustam was dead. There were no reported visible marks of violence.

“ Karen was home alone. I do not know how she reached to the health centre. I wish someone could tell us what happened. I am trying to find out what is going on myself,” said the mother of two.

Young Pustam was also a dancer with Bollywood Dancing School (Clarke Road branch). Sookoo recalled that she left her daughter home at about 7.45 am Friday looking very healthy and within a few hours Pustam was dead.

But this death was not the first mysterious death for the Sookoo family. In May, last year, the body of Sookoo’s brother Ramnarine Sookoo was found under their home. An autopsy performed stated the death was a result of injuries sustained from a blunt forced trauma to the head.

“No one was held for this and we are still not sure if he was killed or not. I went to the station to find out about it and police officers said they were awaiting a toxicology report,” Sookoo said.

Three months after Ramnarine’s death, his brother Basdeo Sookoo began experiencing pains and subsequently died.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed yesterday on the body of Pustam. Sgt Douglas is continuing investigations

We have long passed the point of no return. People only talking but not thinking enough. The country is filled with spectators who who are not making the effort to recognise what has to be done. Vigilante actions can likely sink the nation into further darkness.

I really do hope that I am wrong and that by the time I am ready to retire Trinidad & Tobago would be tropical paradise.

Suspect held for assaulting schoolgirl
By Akile Simon

Story Created: Mar 14, 2011 at 11:44 PM ECT

Story Updated: Mar 14, 2011 at 11:44 PM ECT

A suspect wanted by police in connection with the abduction and rape of a 12-year-old schoolgirl over the weekend was held by police hours after the incident.

The suspect, who police said is in his early thirties, was caught hiding behind a couch inside a house at Dinsley Village, Tacarigua, early Sunday morning by Sgt Wayne Baptiste, Cpl Sherwin Ramey and WPC Shermila Derrick of the Arouca CID. Police had launched a search for him hours after he abducted and raped the teenager who was in the company of two male siblings.

At the time of the incident, the victim and her brothers were on their way to watch a movie at Trincity Mall.

The suspect, police said, has admitted to the crime and is expected to be placed on an identification parade later today at the La Horquetta Police Station before being charged with the offence.

The victim was hospitalised at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex shortly after the attack, which has left her severely traumatised, police said. According to police, around 8.30 p.m. the girl, a secondary school pupil, was walking along a track near Dinsley Junction, when the suspect approached, placed his hands in his pockets, and pretend he had a gun. The victim was ordered to continue walking, while her siblings ran off. She was taken to a nearby river and assaulted by the suspect. Police said the victim, who was naked, ran to a house at Trincity where she reported the incident to a man who clothed her and contacted the police.

Arouca police responded and took the girl to the Hospital where she was medically examined and reunited with her family. Investigations are continuing into the incident.

Meanwhile, Scarbor-ough police are probing two separate rapes involving two 17-year-old teenagers which occurred on Sunday and last Thursday.

In the first incident, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on Sunday, a 17-year-old schoolgirl told police she went to a neighbour's house to make a telephone call, when a man she knows sexually assaulted her.

A report was made to the police and the victim taken for medical treatment.

And around 9.30 p.m. on Thursday, the second victim was walking along Rose Hill, Scarborough, when a man approached her, grabbed her by the neck, covered her mouth and dragged her into nearby bushes, where he removed her clothes and sexually assaulted her. The man then dealt the victim several blows to her head, causing her to fall unconscious, before making his escape

Nigson, rape isn't about desperation for sex. Rape is about power and a psychological need to dominate.

Death after sex: a mystery, says autopsy
By Carolyn Kissoon South Bureau

Story Created: Mar 14, 2011 at 11:44 PM ECT

The autopsy on a teenager who died after having sex with a boyfriend has not been able to confirm a cause of death.

The examination on the body of Karen Pustam, by pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday, was recorded as "undetermined" pending further investigation.

Pustam, 15, was pronounced dead at the Penal Health Centre last Friday, police said. The Form Four pupil of the Penal Secondary School had earlier in the day gone to a road off Digity Trace, Penal, where she had sex, police said. She subsequently complained of feeling unwell, started shaking and lost consciousness.

Pustam lived with her mother, Sheila Sookoo, and younger brother at Digity Trace, Penal. Yesterday, Sookoo said her daughter's death was not natural.

"My child never had a medical history. I want to know what happened to her and how she reached at the health centre," she said.

Sookoo said she kissed her children and left for work around 7.45 a.m. that day.

"My son went to school, but that was Carnival week and Karen did not go to school. She was in perfect health when I left home," she said.

Sookoo said she called her daughter's cellphone around 10 a.m. but there was no answer. Around midday she received an anonymous call that her daughter was at the health facility.

"When I didn't get her on the phone I knew something was wrong. I called everyone looking for her. I didn't know I would go and find my daughter dead," she said.

Pustam will be cremated following a service at her home tomorrow.
