the Personal Hotspot does not show up in the settings menu at all - after checking it only shows up when you activate it with AT&T or your carrier - some carriers offer it by default if you have unlimited data. Bmobile ONLY offers unlimited data but it seems they dont have the feature turned on??

not sure what the real issue is

no problems with bmobile and wifi hotspot on Android...

i0n1c has announced that he will likely release his untether for the iOS 4.3 jailbreak before next weekend.

Because of several changes in iOS 4.3 in comparison to iOS 4.2.1 the jailbreak is NOT READY yet. That is what the *ALPHA* means. I need some time to check what kernel patches are actually required to work 100%ly.

However I recommend the dev-team or chronic-dev to first release a *tethered* iOS 4.3 so that everyone can test if their nice feature actually work. I guess most people require Mobile Substrate to work and AFAIK it does not work due to ASLR. It would be a waste if Apple kills an untethered jailbreak before Mobile Substrate works.

That said I will release the jailbreak when a) there is no other untether by the time I am finished b) if MobileSubstrate works.

Any report that I wait for iOS 4.3.1 is just a misinterpretation of my words.
I merely think that Apple should release a iOS 4.3.1 soon, because it is in their interest to not wait for several months when everyone knows that there is a remote exploit in MobileSafari that might have leaked during the #PWN2OWN contest.
...
I am pretty sure that the untether will be released before the next weekend. I was using older kernel patches that caused lagging on the jailbroken device. I will change that and then port it to the other devices and release.

I0n1c has previously said that his untether will likely end up in RedSn0w. As usual we will keep you up to date with the latest news.

Microsoft's direct effort to challenge Apple's iPod, introduced in 2006 under the Zune brand, is being abandoned after a failure to gain traction in the market.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Microsoft will stop making any new Zune models and shift its focus toward incorporating its music store and subscription software into mobile phones.

The report cited sources who "declined to be identified because the decision hasn’t been announced," but noted that Microsoft's Zune-branded players failed to break into the top five US portable digital music players last year, according to data by NPD Group.

Apple's iPod continues to dominate the media player market, with a 77 percent share of the US market and similar market share globally.

In 2006, Microsoft's chief executive Steve Ballmer said of Apple, "we can beat them, but it’s not going to be easy," and confirmed the company was going to remain in the market for the long haul, gradually building market share.

The Zune HD (below), introduced in the fall of 2009, expected to make a dent into Apple's iPod touch business by combining an OLED screen, NVIDIA Tegra processor, HD Radio, and a new gaming platform that was supposed to leverage Microsoft's Xbox 360. However, it completely failed to do so, for reasons detailed at the time by AppleInsider.

One thing leads to another. First we get a slew of reports of screen flickering from folks using an HDMI to DVI adapter with their Apple TV, and now an Apple rep has confirmed on the company's support forums that Apple is indeed "aware of this issue and working on a fix." No more details than that at the moment, but it seems like you can rest assured that Apple won't be leaving you behind just because your TV doesn't have an HDMI port.

No issues with mine

Apple has released an update to its Remote app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Control iTunes and Apple TV using your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad over your Wi-Fi network. Choose playlists, songs, and albums as if you were right in front of your computer or Apple TV. From anywhere in your home change a song, pick a playlist or browse through your entire library. With a flick of your finger, you can even control every aspect of the Apple TV user interface. Use your device’s QWERTY keyboard to quickly tap out the title instead of clicking letters on the Apple TV screen. Then keep tapping to play, fast forward, rewind, and pause to your finger’s content. Remote has been fully optimized to take advantage of the large screen real estate of the iPad as well as the spectacular Retina display in the iPhone 4, and new iPod touch.

Features
• Control iTunes and Apple TV, from anywhere in your home
• Pause, rewind, fast forward, shuffle, and adjust the volume from your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad
• View album, movie, and TV show artwork
• Create and update Genius playlists
• Create and edit playlists in iTunes
• Search your entire iTunes library
• Control iTunes to send music to AirPlay speakers
• Control the volume on each speaker independently
• Control Apple TV with simple finger gestures
• Enter text with the keyboard
• Even control Shared Libraries on iTunes and the new Apple TV

What's New In This Version:
• Improvements when connecting to iTunes or Apple TV
• Addition of a "skip back" button when playing video
• Additional stability and performance improvements

Included in Version 2.1:
• AirPlay video support to control iTunes on your computer to stream videos to an Apple TV
• Internet radio control to play thousands of internet radio streams in iTunes on your computer
• The ability to control iTunes on your computer to play Movies and TV shows that are rented from the iTunes Store
• Addresses issues connecting to an iTunes library or Apple TV
• Includes stability and performance improvements

You can download Remote from the App Store for free.

In a related note:

Image

Apple has updated Remote earlier today, its free iOS app for controlling desktop iTunes from your iDevice. Release notes accompanying the universal binary download cite a pair of under-the-hood tweaks and the addition of a “skip back” button when playing video. However, Apple’s technical writers have forgotten to include in the description an overlooked new feature, the ability to control the iTunes visualizer.

Our reader Douglas S. tipped us on this. Frankly, we don’t recall this feature in earlier versions so it must be a new thing (correct us otherwise in the comments). “Looks like you can now turn on the Visualiser on Itunes directly from the Now Playing screen,” Douglas writes. He’s right – a new icon does appear upon tapping to reveal controls on the Now Playing screen. You can tap it to turn the iTunes visualizer on and off. Unfortunately, it’s a Mac-only feature.

If you don’t see it sitting right next to the Genius icon, turn the visualizer on in iTunes on your computer and the icon should appear in the Remote app on your device a few seconds later. You only need to do it once to kinda “register” the iTunes visualizer with the app.

Oh, and those under-the-hood tweaks I mentioned earlier? According to the iTunes description page, there are “improvements when connecting to iTunes or Apple TV” and “additional stability and performance improvements.” It’s nothing to write home about, but we definitely love the new iTunes visualizer control and thought you should know about it.

Ryan Petrich Teases the Next Version of Cydia, It Will Be “Awesome” and Saurik answers some q's

saurik wrote:“”"Multitasking is a must and not having it is rather pathetic especially since iOS 4 has been out 8 months.”"”

This is simply not possible at this time. I realize everyone wants it, and hell: I want it, too; but everyone saying it is important doesn’t make it possible. The reason Cydia doesn’t have iOS 4 compliant multi-tasking is that, to make the modifications it makes to the system, it runs as “root”, a user that has more permissions on the system than anything else, which means that SpringBoard, a lowly process running as “mobile”, cannot suspend/resume it.

Now, this is something that /can/ be remedied, and is something that I’ve been thinking of how to do for a long time, but all the obvious ways people like to bring up for making Cydia’s GUI run as mobile with only small parts running as root would make Cydia run slower, and speed is something that is primary on everyone’s minds when they are using Cydia. Luckily, there are things I’ve figured out that may make this more reasonably possible, but certainly not for this release.

An unknown portion of the latest MacBook Pros with Sandy Bridge processors and high-speed Thunderbolt connection appears to be affected by an issue where the computer has trouble maintaining connection with iOS devices, even with the latest iTunes 10.2.1 installed. And if more than 215 posts in a thread on Apple’s Discussion forums are an indication, numerous 2011 MacBook Pros are plagued with this issue.

From what we’ve hearing, it’s a software issue easily patched with an upcoming software update (10.6.7). Here’s what the affected owners are saying.

One posted on Apple’s forums reported issues with Apple TV connecting to the computer:

Although the Apple TV could see the name of my iTunes library, it wouldn’t connect to it, or sometimes, would report that “There are no movies in this library”. I tried every solution I could think of, but no dice.

The problem persists on a replacement machine as well, he wrote. The new MacBook Pros come with a tweaked Mac OS X version that takes advantage of the new Thunderbolt port and Intel’s Sandy Bridge chips, possibly causing these problems. But then again, some owners of older Macs are reporting the same Home Sharing woes.

Another poster offered a temporary workaround involving shutting down Home Sharing each time you restart iTunes:

disable sharing (iTunes -> Preferences -> Sharing)
disable Home Sharing (Advanced -> Turn Off Home Sharing)
    re-enable Sharing and/or Home Sharing

iOS 4.3 and iTunes 10.2 have extended the Home Sharing feature to iOS devices. Previously, Home Sharing would only share your iTunes library among up to five different computers on a local network authorized with the same iTunes Store credentials. iOS 4.3 extended Home Sharing to an unlimited number of iOS devices.

I've had personal experience with this as well. The Apple TV shows that the MacBook Pro's iTunes Library is on & on the same network, but whenever you tried to use it, it always asked that the Library & the Apple TV be on the same wireless network which they were of course on. On a whim I decided to try that same method described above. At first it didn't work either but eventually it kicked in and has worked flawless ever since.
Ironically I have my old HP Pavilion nearby which has my iTunes Library on it still (lost some songs in the transition between the HP & the Mac) & it worked perfect through this ordeal. :?

iPhone developer and hacker iH8sn0w has released an update to Sn0wbreeze 2.3 (iOS 4.3 jailbreak for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch), which among many things, brings an option to enable Multitouch Gestures on supported devices, patch for Mobile Substrate, bug fixes for both iBooty and iBSS, and sleep bug fix for iPod touch 4G / 3G users.

Full change log is as follows:
Adds Multitasking Gestures option in Settings App.
iBooty bug fixes (Includes iBSS issues).
    iBooty is EVEN faster.
    MobileSubstrate is now working.
Sleep bug in iPod Touches is fixed.
    Rare iPad 1G issues resolved.
Added iREB to top bar for future re-runs within sn0wbreeze.
ultrasn0w is STILL broken! Unlockers STAY AWAY!

------

There’s a new alternative on the block for iOS notifications – iconNotifier.

The idea is an interesting one. Once installed via Cydia, this little tweak will block the standard iOS notification popups and reroute them through a new icon based notification system. What this means is from now on, all notifications will scroll underneath the icon for the app that generated them, replacing the name of the app itself. It sounds cool, and it is!

Currently not all apps are supported, but all the major ones are:
    Phone
    Voicemail
    SMS
    Push
    Calendar
    Alarm
    Timer
    Low Power Warnings
    iPod
    Popup Blocker

iLounge claims that the expected MobileMe revamp will be launching ahead of WWDC, sometime next month (April). The new MobileMe is said to be free is may be a major departure from the current version of MobileMe as the current version is said to be phased out in a year.

In addition, the source was told that Apple will be supporting the existing version of MobileMe for the next year, suggesting that the new version will be quite different from the existing service; the extra year of support would likely cover those who recently paid for a full year of MobileMe, prior to Apple removing any method through which a user could pay for the service.

Apple is expected to hold an iOS 5 event sometime in April and this would be a perfect time to also unveil the new MobileMe. The new service is said to be more cloud-based with a “locker” that stores your media. The service will potentially even connect to your iTunes library to provide streaming to iOS devices from the cloud.

Kaiser & Kaiser has announced speedClock 2.0 for iPhone 4, a significant update to their utility that uses the device's built-in video camera to automatically measure the speed of any object, the distance to any point, and lap times of racers. Employing the device's accelerometer or size comparisons establishes distance. Speed and laps are measured using the motion sensing of the video camera, timing the interval between the object entering and leaving the frame. The updated version features: snapshot of measurement, stadimeter distance tool, improved accuracy, and optimized detection algorithms. Because it relies for its operation on a built-in video camera, the app is presently compatible only with iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, iPad 2, and iPod touch 4.

speedClock makes it easy to measure the speed of cars, boats, skaters, skiers, cyclists, running dogs, model cars, footballs, etc. The user simply holds up their iPhone, and allows the app to automatically measure the speed of any object passing through the frame of the viewing screen. Sensitivity controls are included to compensate for very large or small objects, background motion, camera shake, or rapid cyclical motion. All distance measurements can be calculated and displayed in feet or meters. New in version 2.0 is the ability to take a picture and measure speed simultaneously. Along with the new auto-reset function, users can set up the iPhone to continuously measure the speed and save an image of everything that passes.

Feature Highlights:
* Accurately measure speed, distance, or lap times
* Calculate and display distances in meters or feet
* Video motion-sensing automatically measures speed
* Sensitivity controls for optimal measurement in difficult conditions
* Carry a miniature radar gun, lap timer, and range finder in your pocket

The first step in making a speed measurement is getting a good estimate of the distance between the user and the point through which the object will travel. This can be estimated and entered manually (poor accuracy), measured with a measuring tape and entered manually (excellent accuracy), or measured automatically using the app (good accuracy). The user enters their height and then tilts the device to exactly match the horizontal line on the screen with the point on the ground to be measured. The closer the point the larger the angle, as measured by the accelerometer. This is similar in operation to a navigational sextant. New in version 2.0 is an improvement to this clinometer distance tool. Now, users can use the zoom capabilities of the camera, making alignment with a horizontal line easier and more accurate.

Also new in version 2.0 is a second, complementary distance measurement tool: a stadimeter. Similar to an optical rangefinder, it uses the size of a known object (e.g. the height of a person) to calculate the distance. The user sets the size, then employs the two sliders to zoom in and adjust the two arrows so they point to the ends of the object.

The second step in making a speed measurement is to enter the direction of movement of the object, left to right, or right to left. Holding the viewer in either orientation, the user presses Reset and the app will automatically display the speed of the object that passes through its view. Speeds are displayed in large red numerals using a thematic LCD font. In addition to setting the direction of movement, the Settings panel allows adjustment of motion-sensing sensitivity. The user may also set the speed result to be displayed as: m/s, km/h, mph, ft/s, knots, or seconds (independent of the distance). Version 2.0 includes an indicator light that displays the accuracy of the measurement.

speedClock opens with five buttons displayed: Speed (of an object moving across the screen), Time (between repeated occurrences of an object moving across the screen, e.g. runners on a track, including lap number, lap time, and total time), and two buttons for the Distance (between the user and the object). The fifth button, Tips, includes complete instructions and useful tips for maximizing the accuracy of the app. For example, the user is advised to move backwards if the measuring time is to short and the indicator light shows red.

New in Version 2.0:
* Snapshot to document the measurement
* Stadimeter distance tool
* Improved accuracy
* Optimized detection algorithms to better handle small objects, especially on iPhone 4
* Auto-reset, enables user to set up the iPhone to automatically measure the speed and save an image of everything that passes
* Indicator light that shows the accuracy of the measurement
* Zooming capabilities in the clinometer distance tool

"speedClock makes it easy to accurately measure people or objects as they pass by," stated company Owner Sten Kaiser. "Athletes, animals, vehicles, etc. can have their speed measured, and lap times recorded automatically."

Pricing and Availability:
speedClock 2.0 is $0.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category. Review copies are available upon request.

Those wacky guys at Foxconn just can’t keep a lid on anything these days, and now 9to5Mac is citing sources saying they have seen prototype iPhone 5 in the flesh.

Image

The sources claim that the next-generation iPhone 5 will retain a similar size and shape to the current model, with a couple of key changes.

The first change is the screen. Rumors have circulated for a while now, with many believing a 4-inch screen is on the horizon – bringing Apple’s handset in-line with the major competition. An edge-to-edge screen is also expected. No resolution was mentioned, however.

The other change involves the materials used. Again, rumors have suggested that a metal rear-plate will replace the current glass solution. The original 2007 iPhone used a metal enclosure which was later changed to plastic for the 3G and 3GS models to improve radio performance. If Apple does continue with the iPhone 4′s antenna system, it’s possible the material used on the rear won’t affect reception quite so much. Perhaps we could even see Liquid Metal come to the iPhone?

As is so often the case with these things though, we’re sure there will be rumors and counter-rumors leading up to an official iPhone 5 announcement

d glass looks sexy but i'd swap it out in a heartbeat. I will never forget the story of the guy who just got his and within two hours it fell and shattered O_o.

I hope they use another metal too! its wishful but im seeing too many friends with 4's with the side antenna getting scratched easily. Even the Bumper case did damage :|

If you’re the type of power user who pushes their computer to the limits, you might want to pull back just a bit if you own one of the newest MacBook Pro models that Apple released this year -- apparently they’re having issues locking up when the processor load is too much.

MacRumors is reporting that Apple’s discussion forums are lighting up with reports that the new 2011 MacBook Pros can’t handle a high processor load, choosing instead to fold like a deck of cards and lock up (or crash) the system. So what exactly does it take for your new MacBook Pro to cry uncle?

“Received a new 15" 2.2/6750M MBP last week and have been having some issues with the machine locking up under load,” MacRumors forum user lithast explains. “For example if I boot up a VM using Fusion the temperature will spike up above 90 degrees and the machine will lock up most of the time. The machine appears locked (cannot move the mouse at all and keyboard is unresponsive). I can SSH into the machine still and it still is running however. This is one example but it will freeze under a number of circumstances where the CPU/GPU load is very high (rendering, DJ Software, compiling so far in my travels).”

This is certainly not good news for power users looking to take advantage of the notebook’s superpowers, and while Apple is aware of the issue, MacRumors claims there is “no reliable solution” for the problem at the moment.

While MacBook Pro users have speculated that the problem could be related to the notebook’s graphics driver or possibly power management, the only good news is the issue is easily reproduced -- while hopefully means a fix will be on the way soon for beleaguered users.

------

We’ve just been given some info on Apple’s next iOS release, 4.3.1, and from what we have been told, it will contain minor bug fixes. Here are the changes from iOS 4.3:

Baseband updates for the 3GS and iPad (original)
Fixed memory hang that results in memory corruption when reading large files from USIM filesystem
Fixed problem with NTLM authentication in apps and on websites
Fixed issue with the Springboard and 3rd party apps not recgonizing the gyroscope on the iPad 2
    Fixed iPad 2 jailbreak vulneratbility

That’s all we’ve got for the new iOS release. No word on if it will bring Verizon iPhone compatibility.

WinterBoard has been the skinning app of choice for many-a-jailbreaker for a good long while now, and it’s done a sterling job. Now though, it’s perhaps time for a challenger to try to break the equilibrium. That challenger is DreamBoard.

Now before you all read that opening paragraph and go delete WinterBoard, allow me to explain. DreamBoard is actually a little different to WinterBoard. The new DreamBoard is more of a way to apply themes to an iDevice rather than the more granular (if you want it) option of WinterBoard.

DreamBoard’s real party-piece is the ability to make an iOS device look more like Android. Out go the rows of icons and in come the widgets.

The best thing to do is to watch the video below, where you’ll see fancy new weather and Facebook widgets. Worth a watch indeed.

It may be a minor update for most, but those with a brand new MacBook Pro will no doubt find the just-released OS X 10.6.7 upgrade particularly welcome. In addition to various minor improvements for all Macs, it includes a fix for early 2011 MacBook Pros that promises to "improve graphics stability and external display compatibility." That sounds like it may actually fix both the freezing issue we reported on earlier today and the flickering issue that's been plaguing Thunderbolt-equipped MacBook Pros since day one.

None of those issues on mine (for the record)

A report on Tuesday from Chinese financial paper China Times suggests that Apple’s next-generation smartphone has entered trial production and is scheduled for a third-quarter launch. Apple released the iPhone 4 late in the second quarter of 2010, however some speculate Apple may push its iPhone 5 launch back to July or even later in an effort to place more space between its release and the launch of Verizon Wireless’ iPhone 4, which became available this past February. China Times’ report goes on to echo previous rumors that the iPhone 5 will feature a design much like Apple’s current iPhone 4 model, however it will include a few key points of differentiation. Among them are a larger 4-inch display that may stretch further to the edges of the device, thus allowing the overall size to remain unchanged, and a metal chassis in place of Apple’s current glass case. The report also claims that Apple’s iPhone 5 will feature an NFC chip, which could empower a close-proximity wireless payment solution that might some day replace credit cards. An earlier report on Monday suggested Qualcomm will supply Apple with NFC chips for the iPhone 5
