Please HELP Noise in gas tank

When I press brakes suddenly at slow speeds I hear a screeching noise.
The noise can also be heard when rocking the car forward and back when in parked position.

A mechanic told me that the noise is coming from the gas tank and while screeching a vibration can be felt at the bottom of the gas tank.
What can this problem be?

When I bought my AE101, I had the EXACT SAME problem. After checking everything under the car (EVERYTHIIIIINGGGG eh) we narrowed it down to the gas tank, so I went with just enough gas to get me to a gas tank repair place in the Bamboo called Zaps (I think they're no longer operational, but any gas tank repair place worth it's salt could do it).

What the guy (they called him "Rajin", but we all know everybody in the Bamboo have nicknames) explained to be was that inside the tank, there are baffles welded on so that the fuel doesn't all swish to one side and starve the pump on cornering when the tank is low, and that one may have come loose. It made sense to me so I let him go ahead and work on it.

They proceeded to drain the tank, remove it and inspect the outside for signs of rubbing (in case it was the straps at fault). When they shook the tank by itself, same noise. The tank was sent to be cleaned (dipped) to remove any corrosion, debris and gas remnants, so that when it returned about an hour later, he managed to pinpoint exactly where the noise was coming from and punctured a hole just wide enough to fit tthe welding torch.
A few minutes later, the baffle was welded, the hole was patched and my gas tank was sent away to be re-coated and painted.
Total time spent there was like 4hrs (mostly waiting on the tank to be cleaned/re-coated/painted), total money $300 and I've had no issues with the fix for the last 4 years.

perhaps hook nailed it there.
The loss of acceleration on cornering may be the fuel sloshing around the loose baffle and causing the pump to cavitate..

If this only happens when the tank if below half then the faulty/broken baffle may well be the cause.
The fuel pump itself is actually situated in a sort of bowl in the tank with a hole at the bottom which acts like a stilling well to prevent cavitation at the pump so if the two problems are related, your issue could be there.

I'm not familiar with the southland at all, so I'm not the one to suggest anywhere.
Because I got mine fixed in the Bamboo, the guys had hydraulic jack, jackstands and tools to remove the tank since they're in the business of parting out cars.

I'm guessing any other place would require you to bring the tank in yourself, but maybe the south 2nrs could offer some suggestion that's less labour intensive for you.

As soon as I get a chance I'll have someone check out the tank and see if that fix the problem. I was searching on google for a diagram of the gas tank but could not find any. I'll keep on searching.
Do you think I should check the fuel pump before I check the entire gas tank?

^^^ I don't see why not.

Now, I was concerned about the rubbing in my tank sparking when I was hearing the noise, and this is not to panic you, but DO NOT run the tank dry for any reason. Rubbing steel together can't spark when immersed, even if it's immersed in gas , but a dry tank with gas fumes is hella risky to try to keep a quarter tank in reserve until you sort it out.

Run your tank down to like maybe the last quarter to save yourself the mess, and in a well ventilated area, away from anything that can spark (no smoking or power tools please), lift the back seat and bolt out your pump and take a look see.

there is a place in south i know of, when you reach bamboo junction from gulf view side, take a left, drive for a few mins and you'll see a radiator place on the right side. they also recoat the gas tanks and clean it out. not sure if they'll actually do the welding, but i know they recoat and paint, i'll try to get the name of the place and a number for you. if not good luck man.

the name of the place is Singh's radiator works, as for their number...652-1970 or 657-1970, it ringing a bell but i nt sure if its dem. i not sure if they listed but u cud check
