Another Facebook scan is doing the rounds these days, this time attempting to take advantage of users’ interest in the yet un-announced iPhone 5.

The scam is a simple one to spot, if you know what you’re looking for. It all starts to go wrong when someone clicks what they think is a legitimate link on one of their friends’ Wall. This particular link claims to lead to the ‘First Exposure’ of the iPhone 5, and a new webpage is opened.

The next page presents the unwitting user with a CAPTCHA window to fill in, presumably to check that they aren’t a robot. Unfortunately as soon as the CAPTCHA is completed, a fake message appears on your own Wall saying you commented on a link. Someone clicks it, and the whole process repeats.

As for what the bad guys get out of it, after filling in the CAPTCHA users are taken to a survey to fill in, which presumably someone gets paid for.

This isn’t the first time such a scam has hit Facebook. Earlier in the year a similar iPhone 5 link was doing the rounds, though this one is a slightly modified version of the original. Links purporting to take users to a Justin Bieber page have also been used to entice clicks. The whole process is known as ‘linkjacking’ according to security firm M86, via CNET.

At the heart of all these Facebook scams lies the same principal: a way for the scammers to make money by tricking users. Survey scams have been working quite well, so it makes sense that scammers would begin focusing their efforts with pay-per-install affiliate programs.

Facebook recommends people don’t click the links, even if they appear to be from people you know.

I had an unlocked and jailbroken 2G and later an unlocked and jailbroken 3GS - now I have a factory unlocked iPhone 4 and I have no interest in jailbreaking it - right now it just works and it works well.

Yes I see great promise in Android, but he's right, there's a new great one every week - there might be a thing such as "too open" for a platform.

Recently here I've become a Google fanboy - their Google Apps just rock
gmail (mail.trinituner.com runs on gmail), Google docs, Google calendar, Google notes, Google Chrome, DFP Small Business, Google Ad Manager, Google Adsense, Google Adwords, Google Analytics, Youtube - I use it all.

and one would think that is more reason for me to switch to Android - but Google Apps work great on an iPhone, so no reason to switch.

Agreed :(
I had the 3gs for about a year, Then switched up to the Iphone4.. I kept that for 3 months, but it frustrated the hell out of me..many many failed calls, proximity censor problems & frustrations with updating, jailbreaking and unlocking. So i switched to blackberry...which was good, but coming off the iphone, it lacked too many things I'd gotten used to..

So I went android...which was really nice, but as good ..and hackable as it was, Android just doesnt have the polish that iOS does, nor the speed..It also required too much active participation on my part - Task killing & rebooting. Also, apps on Android arent quite there yet, at least not like iOS.

I got myself a factory unlocked iphone 4, and am happy to be back with iOS. They seemd to have fixed the proximity censor problems.. I dont get dropped calls, but signal strength isnt the best. And it was awesome to see that apps actually managed to get better while I was off Iphone.

Samsung will demonstrate an all-new 10.1-inch display at the SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium next week. Samsung's new display will have a 2560 x 1600 resolution, far in excess of anything on the tablet market today. At 300 dpi, the display also compares favorably with the Retina Display resolution of Apple's iPhone 4; meanwhile, Samsung claims the PenTile technology used in the display allows it to operate while drawing 40 percent less power.

It's unlikely for a number of reasons that Apple will employ this exact display in the iPad 3. The 10.1-inch form factor exceeds the 9.7-inch size of the current iPad's design, and the display resolution is also in excess of the pixel-doubled resolution of the iPad's current 1024 x 768 display. The PenTile technology that's made its way into displays for smartphones like Google's Nexus One is also something Apple has shied away from thus far, preferring to stick with tech like in-plane switching (IPS) for its iPhones and iPads.

That having been said, Samsung's new display does prove that high-res, tablet-sized displays are indeed possible without giving up power efficiency, which makes it all the more likely that we'll see a Retina Display quality touchscreen in the iPad 3. It's previously been rumored that Apple wanted to include such technology in the iPad 2, but was unable to do so because of high costs and manufacturing constraints. Although it's looking less likely that rumors of a fall introduction of the iPad 3 will pan out, Samsung's newest display does raise the chances of us seeing a vastly improved iPad display in 2012.

There's no indication yet when this new display will find its way into Samsung's Galaxy tablets; the company just announced the new display and won't be demonstrating it until next week. However, if Samsung can find a way to mass-produce these displays and shoehorn them into the Galaxy Tab before Apple includes similar technology in the iPad, Samsung will finally have a major hardware advantage that it can hold over Apple's more popular tablet line.

Here's another interesting rumor (to match the one about Duke Nukem the other day) featuring a major gaming property coming to the iPhone. Touch Arcade spotted a trademark by game developer Bungie for something called "Crimson," supposedly related to "computer game software for use on mobile and cellular phones." That would hint at an iOS and/or Android release from the legendary Halo developer, who recently split ways with Microsoft to work on an original IP for Activision. Bungie started out making games for Mac, and this latest game is rumored to be an online shooter, possibly with MMO elements, which would make it perfect for going cross platform on Windows, Mac, consoles and smartphones.

Of course, none of this is confirmed by any of the companies involved. All we have so far is this trademarked name, Crimson. But iOS is clearly growing in popularity as a platform among even more traditional developers, and Bungie, free as it currently is from the reign of Microsoft (who itself has even relented to the popularity of iOS), has got to be interested in the iPhone and the iPad as gaming platforms.

Microsoft has joined HTC, Nokia, and Sony in the fight against Apple's App Store trademark application in the EU, according to Digital Daily.

"Microsoft and other leading technology companies are seeking to invalidate Apple’s trademark registration for APP STORE and APPSTORE because we believe that they should not have been granted because they both lack distinctiveness," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. "The undisputed facts establish that 'app store' means exactly what it says, a store offering apps, and is generic for the services that the registrations cover."

Microsoft and others are also fighting Apple's registration in the United States. Despite the ongoing opposition, Apple has sued Amazon and threatened others over use of the alleged mark.

A new survey of ActiveSync-based smartphones in the enterprise found that Apple's iPhone is the market leader with a 61 percent share and growing, while Google Android owns just 17 percent.

The business user data was released this week by Intermedia, the world's largest Microsoft Exchange hosting provider with 320,000 premium hosted Exchange e-mail accounts. In addition a strong lead for the iPhone, the data also shows market dominance for the iPad, with a 99.8 percent share of ActiveSync-based tablets.

Apple and Google were found to be the leaders in enterprise smartphone operating systems, while the remaining players -- Windows Phone, Nokia Symbian and Palm's webOS -- accounted for the 22 percent of platforms in the "other" category.

Intermedia's numbers also show that Apple's share of the enterprise continues to grow. In April, the iPhone remained the number one device, and even increased its share to 64 percent among new devices. Android's share also climbed to 33 percent for the month, showing that both platforms are making gains at the expense of competitors.

iPad share continued to remain dominant in April as well, with close to 100 percent of new tablet activations being iPads. Intermedia said it typically sees about 300 new iPads activated in its service per month, but that number jumped to over 900 in March and more than 1,200 in April.

Image

"Professionals want to sync and manage their business email, contacts, and calendars across their computers, smartphones, and tablets," said Jonathan McCormick, chief operating officer of Intermedia. "They also want to use the brands of their choice. Supporting these options can strain an IT department accustomed to managing only one type of device -- or an entrepreneur with no IT staff to help with set up. Email services like Intermedia's deliver these productivity capabilities with the click of a mouse and back them up with 24x7 support from certified professionals."

Apple regularly boasts about the success that it has had with the iPhone in enterprise, as well as the quick adoption the iPad has found in the corporate world. In its last quarterly earnings conference call, the company revealed that 88 percent of the Fortune 500 are testing or deploying the iPhone, while 75 percent are utilizing the iPad.

Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook also said that the success of the iPad and iPhone have created a "halo effect" for the Mac. As companies have made iOS-based devices a part of their employees' available tools, they have also begun buying Macs for corporate use.

Here's an incredible story of how author Sean Power retrieved his stolen 17" MacBook Pro from 800km away, using Prey and Twitter.

Sean's bag containing his laptop, some money and other important items was stolen. Three days later, he received a report from Prey noting the computer's location and a picture of the alleged thief, which was taken by the MBP's camera. Soon the man in custody of the laptop launched Skype from a bar, and Sean was able to learn his name.

Sean then took to Twitter, explaining the situation to his followers, who began to do a Google search on the name, determining that he was part owner of the bar. Sean then contacted the police while a Twitter follower volunteered to wait for them to arrive at the bar, posing as a woman who was waiting on a friend.

The police never arrived, noting that Sean hadn't filed a stolen item report. In the meantime, Sean watched as the man checked his email and even his bank account. Eventually, Sean called the man's cell phone.

The man freely gave up the laptop, bag and all of the stolen belongings to people in the bar.

It's an incredible story, and one that could have gone very wrong (approaching an alleged thief is best left to police). Prey played no small role. This piece of software can take photos of a person using a computer as well as sceenshots, all undetected. It will use either GPS or Wi-Fi triangulation to note its location, and it can keep your data locked down.

It's an incredible story, and we're glad it worked out. Congratulations to Sean and Prey.

Business Insider points to an analyst note that we’ve been expecting for a while now. Jefferies analyst Peter Misek says the fifth generation iPhone is called the iPhone 4S, as we told you weeks ago, sports the A5 dual-core processor from the iPad 2, and works on HSPA + networks – which we have also been hearing some chatter about lately.

The iPhone 4S is rumored to launch in September and is said to feature T-Mobile, Sprint, and China Mobile compatibility. BGR posted photos of a T-Mobile iPhone in testing, that we quickly learned is actually the iPhone 4S with an A5 chip inside.

Well T-Mobile is a GSM network. I doubt Apple would drop support for that. I believe the iPad 2 is a dual GSM/CDMA device though Apple chose for whatever reason to not actively enable that component. I'd expect the iPhone 4S to use it though.

So basically this is my spec sheet for it:
    Apple A5 dual-core processor
8MP camera w/ 1080p video recording (w/ Sony technology, switching from OmniVision)
    3.7" or 4.0" display
    64GB model (maybe)
    2G, 3G & maybe (doubtful) 4G support
Same basic iPhone 4 design (hence the 4S name)

Mac OS X Lion developer preview 3 features some new enhancements including a redesigned login screen, the previously detailed Reading List feature in Safari, some new wallpapers, and other minor tweaks. The redesigned login screen above has an iOS-like feel to it with a silver-gradient backdrop and new icons across the bottom for sleep mode, restart, and shut down.

Image

The previously detailed Reading List feature in Safari is also present with a eyeglasses icon on the left side of Safari (location is possibly user customizable). Click the small icon and the fairly-intutive user interface, shown above, will appear. The Reading List displays items you have read and have yet to read, in an iOS style box format.

We have also been told that the new Lion developer release packs in some brand-new wallpapers including an actual lion.

Just off the heals of rumors pointing to Apple repositioning the iPhone LED flash to the top-right side of the next-generation iPhone, purported iPhone 5 camera parts have appeared online. The above image shows the iPhone 5′s front-facing camera sensor in addition to the rear-camera sensor. The front-facing camera piece is re-designed, but we can’t tell any technical details, but the juicy information comes from the rear-facing camera…

The back camera sensor also appears to have a re-design but is lacking two critical elements from the iPhone 4′s piece: the LED camera flash and the piece that blocks camera/flash interference. This works perfectly with the apparent fifth-generation iPhone case leak from today – and it seems possible that Apple is actually relocating the iPhone’s camera flash for their next iPhone. The image comes to us from the typically well-sourced Apple.pro.

Hundreds of iPhones were thrown from an 18th floor window as knockoff dealers attempted to rid themselves of evidence during a police raid.

According to M.I.C. Gadget, local authorities received a tip about an unlicensed cellphone in the Huaqiangbei district of Shenzhen.

So, the officers visit the workshop and knock the doors. No one answers so they bashed in. Four men were burning papers and documents in the apartment at that time. The officers then found ten thousands of Nokia phone stickers and not-yet-burned customers database. The database is awesome, includes all provinces of mainland China, except Tibet. However, the most surprising discovery is that four big boxes of shanzhai cellphones were thrown out of the windows before the officers bashed in. About a thousand cellphones were thrown, and that includes 656 fake iPhones with 140 cases, 284 Nokia phones with 460 cases, 69 Sony Ericsson phones.

No one was hurt by the falling phones; however, they smashed cars and fences below.

Police are reportedly cracking down on knockoff dealers since the World University Summer Games will be held in Shenzhen this August. Authorities don't want foreigners to come across these knockoff products which could affect the image of the city.

Take a look at the video below for more information...

A source inside U.K. mobile phone retailer Phones4U says the next generation iPhone will hit stores across the U.K. on November 21st, according to T3.

A November release would add velocity to the spate of rumours suggesting that the iPhone 5 will be unveiled in September 2011, doing away with Apple’s previously rigid annual summer release schedule.

This is the first specific launch date prediction; however, a September unveiling has been rumored several times by other sources.

Developer Codenrama has released a free tech demo which again shows off the free wandering, graphically stunning Unreal Engine for iOS devices. The demo which is very similar to Epic Citadel, takes you on a stroll through a beautifully detailed and accurately lit 3D setting based on the Italian town of Assisi.
So far we have seen a few tech demos but very few games using the Unreal Engine. Codenrama shed a bit of light on what the problem may be.

While developing Castlerama, we had to face the fact that newer devices such as iPhone4s and iPad2s are very different from their predecessors, iPhone3GSs and iPads, in that the former have twice as much memory. In order to have the app run on all devices, we had to compromise quite a bit, pushing the old devices to their limits (risking crash if other applications are left running) while keeping the new devices well behind their capabilities. In the future we believe we will have to develop two versions for each application.

If this turns out to be the case for other developers too, how many versions of games will have to be released to enable a smooth and enjoyable gaming experience across devices? Will we see a universal binary for iPhone 3GS and first generation iPads and then another for iPhone 4 and iPad 2 devices? What happens when the iPhone 5 arrives with additional spec bumps?

Recent rumors and a patent application suggest an upcoming version of iOS will include some form of speech recognition. Inspired by these revelations, graphic designer Jan-Michael Cart created a short video that shows how Apple could add this speech-to-text functionality to iOS 5.

His conceptualization takes speech recognition one step further than the patent, which focus on calling only. Cart envisions a world where speech is incorporated into the core of iOS and used throughout the user interface. For example, a long-press of the home button would launch the speech recognition module and let you create text messages. An API could be made available to developers so that they could add speech recognition to their applications. It's an interesting concept that would make many users happy if Apple implements speech-to-text in this way.

Just two bits of news here. Remember that Toshiba is one of the companies that Apple is said to be working with on future displays, right?

Toshiba Corp will spend about 100 billion yen ($1.19 billion) to build a factory for making small LCD panels, mainly to supply to Apple Inc’s iPhones, the Nikkei business daily said. The company’s wholly owned unit, Toshiba Mobile Display Co, will construct the facility in Ishikawa prefecture and the plant will churn out low-temperature polysilicon LCD panels, which allow for high-resolution images, the paper said.Work on the plant will start by early next year, with the production due to begin in the second half of 2011, Nikkei said.Toshiba Mobile Display already makes low-temperature polysilicon LCD panels at a facility in the prefecture and its monthly production capacity of 8.55 million units is projected to more than double with the new factory, the daily said. Apple will invest in a portion of the investment for the factory, the Nikkei said.

OK, good. Now today’s news from Toshiba:

Displays for Mobile Phones and Portable Electronics: The mobile section of the booth will feature high-resolution LTPS displays, up to 367ppi (pixels per inch) resolution density, in sizes ranging from 3.3-inch to 4.0-inch with resolution formats ranging from Wide VGA (480 x 864) to HD (720 x 1280). In addition, these displays will demonstrate advanced technologies such as high-contrast (up to 1,500:1), high-color (up to 92% NTSC), and wide viewing angle (up to H/V 176º/176º). The displays are just a few representative examples of TMD’s broad line of thin and light displays for mobile smartphones and other portable electronic devices.

Of course, numerous reports have detailed a new iPhone with edge-to-edge 4-inch display panels.

So I decided to cut my bmobile sim last night into a micro and inserted it in my pad .....I must sAy it feels like it loads 4x faster now than on my bb also I had 6 tabs loading and somehow it managed to load all 6 .....YouTube bids start up loading fast and then really slows down by the time it loads half way , other than that , tuner loads fast ...could compare it to greedot wifi which is horribly slow but since it's edge I'd say it's fast for it to be loading with the same speeds as green dot 1mb and under.

The video blow shows Ronen Verbit having a silly time playing with a little red ball. It doesn’t sound very interesting, until you see how he uses three iPhone 4 screens to tell the story.
Ronen, along with a few friends, were able to shoot three separate videos and combine them into one creative and fun story displayed across the three screens depicting him being ‘stuck’ inside the iPhone 4. It’s rather deviceful (no pun intended!) and they did a great job putting this together.

As if we needed any more reasons to be head over heels in love with ChAIR Entertainment's iOS masterstroke Infinity Blade, today we're getting word from the developer that they're releasing a brand new update for the game that will be available Thursday, May 19.

We don't know much beyond that, but Epic and ChAIR were kind enough to send over a few screens of the game in action, which we'll gladly share with you below. And if you have a capable iOS device and haven't yet checked out Infinity Blade...well then we're afraid there's just no hope left for the likes of you.

The update will also add a bunch of new items for the game's single player portion which we also have some pictures of as well.

The dual core A5 processor really does speed up browsing on the iPad 2

I opted for the wifi only (non 3G) iPad 2 since I can run personal hotspot on the iPhone and get GSM /EDGE data on the iPad without paying for a separate data sim or having to swap sims from my phone to the iPad.

Today electricity went for a couple hours here and that personal hotspot was a life saver! I ran the iPad and my laptop from it.

That was the smartest thing you did because having a 3G iPad and 4G iphone with personal hotspot is like having 2 Internet packages running on separate modems ,

I assume the personal hotspot locally won't appear unless you jailbreak and unlock your device ? Or is the option already there before it is jailbroken?

Not the first time for me. But for most the reason is cause they either don't know how to or they think its illegal (still).
My iPhone 4 is jailbroken, but its mostly for the conveniences like SBSettings & biteSMS (mostly for the reply as you get a message system) & the CallerID Format Fix (which to me Apple should have it working from the get go).

I'll leave you with this*. We'll see what iOS 5.0 brings to the table in a little under a month from now.

(There sure was a lot of arguing going about the time that link I posted was initially posted...)
