Way..... you really did some searching!

Yup base porting price is 400 per cylinder for 4 and 5 valve per cylinder heads. As we've discussed, I'll e-mail complete pricing on request.

But more importantly, I've seen far too many heads where the owner is looking to make big power and the valve guides are shot! I mean some of them have valve deflection greater than 1mm!
There's no way that any valve job will last long under those circumstances... and far worse in the potential of breaking a valve with badly worn guides and destroying an entire engine!

Unfortunately there are local mechanics who will put a head together and not even check these key tolerences! There are also those who claim to port heads who have never used a flow bench, nor have an understanding of where material should be removed and the reasons why... and how much!

Make no mistake, this hobby, sub-culture, or whatever you want to call it is not cheap. The guys who use my services want the best locally available head preparation services. This is only possible through considerable research, experience, and the application of appropriate science and modern technollogy.

What would you recommend for a daily driver? Vehicle is a Mazda 323 1.5 VVT.

Your goals play a huge part in determining the best way forward.

For a daily driver, small displacement engine, unless you have really special plans, I would recomend a focus on preserving longevity and maximizing effeciency of the engine. A good cleaning and making sure the valve guides are good will take care of longevity issues.

Then a good valve seat job will make sure your valve seal perfectly. This will bump up compression and the efficiency of the engine. Of course with all jobs I recommend changing valve seals... just cheap insurance.

That may be good enough right there. But if you have upgraded the intake and exhaust system, or have plans to do so, you can opt with a stage 1 porting job.

Stage 1 jobs will usually maintain the stock port entry and exit dimensions, but on some heads, in conjunction with a 3 angle valve seat job can realize as much as 10% increase in flow capacity of the head.

I hope this helps.

Richard.
