THE human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), puncheon and other strong rums, and intimidation are the three leading causes for criminal activity in the Laventille area.
This is according to a survey conducted in the area by Living Society Community Consultants during the period November 2010 to May 2011.
The survey, which was entitled "On New Trends/Emerging Motivational Phenomena Responsible for Heinous Crimes and Criminal Conduct", was commissioned by the Ad Hoc Committee for the Eradication of Crime in Laventille.
In interpreting the data, Lennox Smith, coordinator of the committee, said that the interviewees voiced the opinion that people with HIV/AIDS were more prone to commit criminal offences because they believed they have nothing to live for.
He added the interviewees stated that puncheon rum made the criminals more brazen as it reduces cowardice.
Smith stated another factor in criminal behaviour was former institutionalised girls, which placed third in the 13-16 age group.
The connection between criminal activity and the institutionalised girls, Smith said, was that the criminals would engage in criminal behaviour to satisfy their female counterparts and would kill off any competition.
Other trends, according to the survey, were peer influence and marijuana, which placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the poll.
According to the two-page document obtained by the Express, of the 200 people interviewed by the surveyors within 11 communities in Laventille inclusive of Beetham and Sea Lots, the majority of them agree that HIV, and by extension acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), constituted the leading cause of criminal behaviour in the area.
The 200 people, ranging in ages from 13 to 35, surveyed were those who at the time had criminal cases before the courts, had in the past and subsequently found not guilty, and those convicted of a crime.
The survey showed that the age group 26-35 had the highest record for HIV/AIDS being the main motivational tool for the committing of crimes.
The highest recorded response for puncheon and other strong rums being a cause for criminal behaviour was the 21-25 age group; while the highest record of intimidation as a factor was also recorded by the 21-25 age group.

Both posts are quite right. The values that support society and ensure its continuance (honesty, courtesy, proper work ethic, etc.) were never handed onto the next generation. Instead, another value system was passed on - some of its fruits are the issues in the OP's post:

I was working in Laventille... these men block the road and say if they dont get work we cyah wuk there... so we were like ok we go hire yuh, the next day homeboy just siddong there smoking he weed and talking on phone, after the day got finished he wanna get his money for the day...

what analysis techniques were used?
regression? factor analysis?

what mechanisms did they use to validate the data?
