3 Longdenville rape suspects in custody

THREE men remained in police custody for last week Thursday morning's robbery and rape of a Central mother and her daughter.

They were still being questioned by detectives up to press time last night.

Two other men however who were arrested hours after the incident were released yesterday.

Around 2.30 a.m. on Thursday masked men broke into the family's house in Longdenville, Chaguanas, raping the 49-year-old mother and her 17-year-old daughter and beating her two sons who were at home at the time. They stole cash, food, money and jewelry then fled the scene the family's Toyota Corolla.

On Thursday night two men were arrested in connection with the incident during a police exercise in Longdenville but investigators said that they were held merely for questioning and were released yesterday morning.

Between Friday night and Saturday however, three more suspects were arrested.

One surrendered to CrimeWatch host, Ian Alleyne when his mother called one of the show's associates stating that the man wanted to surrender. The suspect, a 23-year-old man of Enterprise, Chaguanas was later handed over to a party of North Eastern Divisional Task Force officers at the Independence Square branch of KFC. The team of heavily armed officers led by Sgt Roger Alexander then took the man to the Chaguanas Police Station.

He told the police that he did not rape anyone.

Another man aged 19 was arrested on Saturday morning around 3 a.m. when a team of officers led by ASP Johnnie Abraham raided his School Street, Enterprise home. It is alleged that several bits of incriminating evidence including a cellular phone belonging to one of the victims was found in the man's house.

He later told police that he was sorry for what he had done but was distraught over the death of her mother.

Around 3 p.m. on Saturday police arrested a third man at his home in Enterprise, Chaguanas.

One of the victim's, namely the 17-year-old girl remained at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where she had to be rushed after being gang raped.

Cops on the trail of 4th rape suspect

POLICE investigating the rape and robbery of a Longdenville mother and daughter spent yesterday searching for a fourth man in connection with the attack.
A senior police officer working on the case said the suspect had been "moving from place to place" but they were on his trail.
Investigators worked hard yesterday gathering information and interviewing persons as they build a case against the four men involved.
Early last Thursday morning four men broke into a house and stole cash, food and jewelry, then raped a 49-year-old mother and her 17-year-old daughter.
The men then escaped with the loot in woman's car that was later abandoned.
Three men— aged 19, 23, 25 years old, all of Enterprise—are already in police custody.
The 23-year-old suspect surrendered to police at Port of Spain on Friday night.
The 19-year-old was arrested on Saturday morning at his home at School Street by a team of officers led by ASP Johnny Abraham. The third man was arrested during a police exercise.

THREE men accused of rape and robbery of a Longdenville mother and her daughter in a crime hotspot during curfew hours appeared in court yesterday.

A crowd of people turned up outside the Chaguanas Magistrates' Court to see the three men who are accused of a crime that caused public outrage across the nation.

The accused Stephen Loney, 23, of Tee Lane, Goodwill Road, Joel Vialva, 20, of Goodwill Road; and Jason Romeo of Chrissie Terrace, Enterprise, Chaguanas, were led in handcuffs from the police station to courthouse.

As the men were escorted by a dozen armed members of the Central Division Task Force, people shouted: "Don't hide your face. Raise your heads and walk."

They appeared before Magistrate Gillian David-Scotland shortly before noon.

Each was charged with two offences of rape and one charge of burglary.

The charges were laid by Acting Sergeant Susan John of the Chaguanas CID.

The public gallery of the courtroom was cleared before the case was called.

None of the men were represented by attorneys.

Police prosecutor Asraph Haspoodeen said he was objecting to bail because of the seriousness of the charges.

Shortly after midnight last Thursday four men broke into a house in Longdenville, and gang-raped a 49-year-old woman and her teenaged daughter.

The men stole cash and items and drove off in the woman's Toyota Corolla motorcar.

Last Friday, one suspect surrendered to police in Port of Spain.

A second was arrested the following day in Chaguanas. Police arrested a third man on Sunday.

The teenager has been warded at the Mount Hope Medical Sciences Complex since the incident.

Haspoodeen said the 17-year-old rape victim remains warded at hospital in stable condition.

The vehicle was later recovered.

The teenager is being treated at the Mount Hope Medical Sciences Complex.

Police are in search of a fourth man.

The accused are expected to reappear on October 7.
