Robert Persaud and Joanne Briggs shared the lead vocals for Los Parranderos de UWI



Holly “The Arima Kid” Betaudier’s Parang Bandwagon got rolling last Saturday at the carpark of the Princess Royal Park, Arima.

And like all other cultural festivities, the stipulations of the curfew hours gave rise to daytime paranging and the 86-year-old Betaudier was quick to adjust.

As early as 3 pm, the event, co-hosted by the Arima Borough Council, saw parang lovers flocking to the venue and dancing their hearts away.

The performing bands were Carib Santa Rosa, celebrating their 50th anniversary with frontline singers Anna Assang, Claire Piper and Jessica Caliste.

Los Parranderos de UWI were next on, performing six songs with lead singers Robert Persaud and Joanne Briggs.

Viva Nueva followed splendidly with lead singer Venezuelan songbird Varelis Toussaint-Padia of Calvary Hill, Arima, ending with Rebuscar and continuing to bring new dimensions to the parang artform.

Rebuscar’s Venezuelan lead singer Kenny Bastida in his repertoire performed a unique song composed by Melan Garcia highlighting Holly Betaudier and Santa Rosa, Arima, for the development of parang in “Un Trocito de Arima”

Bastida’s performance was complemented with the soothing voice of joint lead singer Joanna Wells
