Super vs Premium question

Postby Rodn3y » December 21st, 2011, 9:20 am

hey, i know this has been covered many times in detail but i am still unsure about something.

i have a SUV 2.4L gas and the manual say for Trinidad and Tobago use 92Ron fuel.

Is this Super or Premium?

If it is super, is using premium overkill and waste of $$$$

Finally, can you really tell the difference in performance using both gasses (seeing as how the vehicle designed to work with 92 ron)

thanks.........

taken from alternativefuels.com

"Definition:
Octane rating is a fuel's ability to resist detonation and is classified by three main rating types:

All tests use blends of iso-octane and heptane as the reference fuels.

RON (Research Octane Number) is determined by burning fuel in a test engine running under mild and low load conditions, and comparing the results to the reference fuels.

MON (Motor Octane Number) is determined by burning fuel in a test engine running under severe and sustained high load, high speed conditions, and comparing the results to the reference fuels.

(R+M)/2 (Pump Octane Number) as the name implies, is determined by adding together a fuel's RON and MON ratings and dividing by two. This is the common rating found on pumps in North America.

Pronunciation: ok tayn ray ting
Also Known As: Octane Number
Examples:
Ethanol has an (R+M)/2 octane rating of 113."

its been covered a couple times here...do a search...

super is fine for MOST factory vehicles...using premium will yield no performance gains....the higher octane rating will help protect more high performance engines(high compression ratio/turbocharged) from knock/detonation...

Long story short:
Manual said use 92RON, in T&T Super is 92.
Prem is 95.

Normally a call for 92 RON would be answered with Super, but the manufacturer assumes that the fuel you are using not only has a RON rating of 92 minimum but also a fairly high MON rating. The fuels in our stations are often dirty or have a lower than expected MON rating, therefore, depending on how your car reacts, you may need to run Premium to avoid detonation.

The only way to tell is to run Super and listen for light pinging while you drive (uphill is good to check). Some cars that can run what SHOULD be 92 RON (super), can sometimes ping with super and need to run premium.... just test them with back to back tanks of super, then premium.

i have a swift sport, when using premium from NP, i hear the pinging, i would guess this is either because the fuel is dirty or maybe even mixed. however when i go to unipet, there is no pinging, there fuel i can say is not mixed because i saw it myself to be clear and i know its should be cleaner than NP because of the filtration system they have. so super may give u pinging from NP but try it from unipet it mite save u a lot on money rather than buying premium.
